After The Osi Signing, Falcons Need One More Priority Defensive Free Agent Heading Into The Draft

Our beloved Atlanta Falcons have been "on the verge" of signing Osi Umenyioura for the better part of a week. Wow, this has been a long week - I am at least hoping to see a favorable deal for my Falcons with all this supposed haggling taking place. I would like to see a deal somewhere in neighborhood of 4yrs, $18mm with $9mm guaranteed. I don't mind if there are incentives in deal taking deal up to about $24mm as long as they are all incentive-based and tied to performance.

I really think Falcons need to add one more veteran to the defense as there are still the following needs:

  1. Cornerback #1
  2. Defensive End #2
  3. Defensive Tackle #1
  4. Outside Linebacker #2
  5. Tight End #2
  6. Right Guard #2
  7. Cornerback #4

That is too many needs to fill in one draft. Realistically, you will get 1 starter and 2 contributors from this draft and I would like to see 1 more starter on defensive side (besides Osi) on the defense.

But who?

Karlos Dansy, OLB (older, 31 but still productive)

Brent Grimes, CB (wants too much $$$, 30 and coming off serious Achilles inj)

Antoine Winfield, CB (still productive but 35)

John Abraham, DE (not crazy about this, as I want a younger stud)

Others????

why is this Osi deal taking so long?

my guess is Osi obviously wants more than the Falcons are willing to give - in some respects, I like that it is taking so long so I know the Falcons are trying to get the best deal for the team.

I think you will see a deal with a lot of incentives where the agent can brag but the base deal will be much lower.

we shall see.

I wouldn't mind Micheal Huff, versatile player Nolan would love. Played mostly corner last year and played well at that, bothered Julio when they went against each other.

Huff would be a nice player but heard zero rumors on Huff/Falcons and supposedly he is visiting the Ravens so I look for Huff to be a Raven.

Dansby would be my bet if they do go after another free agent. ILB depth is lacking and that position isn't very good in this year's draft. It will also further free them to focus on areas of more pressing need. Likewise, he said he wants to play here which may mean he'd be willing to take less to play for the Falcons.

why is this Osi deal taking so long?

Osi wants an above market deal and I'm going to assume Dimitroff is having none of that.

I know everyone wants a young stud DE for us to have to start day one, but in my mind it is just too much of a risk to hope we can get one at 30 (unless you think we are going to combine draft picks to move up and even then there aren't many guaranteed DE's to go after). Realistically, I think we go DE somewhere in rounds 2-4 and get a project to add to our depth chart. But a day one starter? Probably not.

Now corner on the other hand is DEEP in this draft class and the back of the first round is the perfect place to be for someone like Trufant, Xavier Rhodes, or Wilson to fall in our lap who can start day one. I also think we can get a day one starter at DT in the 2nd round. Therefore, my vote would be to grab a LB or another DE in FA if we were to make one more move. Either Dansby or Abe is my vote.

To recap:

-Grab Abe/Dansby

-Draft CB round 1, DT round 2, DE/LB/CB/RB rounds 3-5

My two cents.

maybe trade for rolando mcclain the lb from the raiders??

that just is not going to happen. first, McClain is the "anti-Falcon" with all of his off-field baggage. second, Falcons are not going to trade draft picks and take on all that salary when there are good draftable nickel OLBs in this draft.

Dansby would be my favorite as well.

Then I'm going into draft thinking DE/CB or CB/DE with those first two picks depending on how the board falls.

They're going after an NT early. It is the most pressing need by far since without one the hybrid defense is useless and all the edge rushers in the world won't really matter if the pocket doesn't collapse.

I would go with Grimes or a NT like Alan Branch, or someone else. I also like Dansby as an option. I would love to bring in Brandon MOore cause we have a need at RG. I think TG should trade out of the 1st if we can get the player we want with a high second rounder. I would also like to see him trade back into the middle of the 2nd using one of the picks we would have gotten from trading out. We have alot of picks so I would love to hang out in the 2nd round this draft.

I'm thinking we'll bring Abe back for cheap. The longer he's on the market, the better the chances that he resigns with us. If we get Abraham and Osi, I would like to see us trade up for either Jones or Ogletree in the draft. If not, then we take a DE at #30. Possibly a CB. It all depends on who's left.

how good has Alan Branch been for Arizona? I remember him being drafted 4 years ago but have not kept up with him since......there is no buzz about him - just curious. somebody give me the skinny.

CB is the biggest need IMO.

DT is another one that needs to be addressed early. However if osi is signed then i see those as the only to real needs. DE is in ok shape with kroy manning the other side, hes not the greatest but he plays a hybrid role so he doesnt just rush the passer every play. We also have young guys in mass and matthews that the FO seems high on. TE is a need but not a huge need this year, id expect a late round pick to be used on a young guy like mcdonald, williams, fauria, or anyone theres alot of good prospects and they wont be starting or playing much this year anyhow. RG ok id be ok spending an early pick on a guard but i think we all know they resigned reynolds to start so its not probable IMO. LB ok some ppl say we are not in good shape at LB and some say it had everything to do with the scheme not the talent, it all depends on how our coaches see it, i personally think we just need a little depth and fully expect to have the same three starters this year as last. Dent looked to improve pretty well late last year, nic had two bad games where he got beat by the TEs but i think that had to do with scheme, and weatherspoon well he aint goin nowhere lol.

I see two serious needs DT and CB and that can be managed in the draft. JMHO

I dont know just know he has the size you look for in a NT. My dream draft would be to resign Grimes then:

Early 2nd rounder from trading out: Get Tank Carridine

Middle 2nd Rounder from trading back into the 2nd: Get Larry Warford

Late 2nd Rounder that we already had: Get John Jenkins

Jenkins is hot garbage. His stock has been plummeting for a very good reason. Instead, I'd try to bring in Dansby after Osi is presumably wrapped up and draft Jesse Williams in the 1st.

3-4:

Weathersoon-------Dansby

Osi--Babs--Williams--Peters--Massaquoi/Biermann/Draft pick

4-3:

Weatherspoon----Dansby----Nicholas

Osi----Babs----Williams---Massaquoi/Biermann/Draft pick

That would be a versatile, physical front seven.

Falcons need more help at DT/DE/LB than CB. If you don't have a pass rush, it doesn't matter how good our DB's are.

ok right now atlanta has mcclain asante and franks on the roster and a few practice squad players, you cant tell me you'd like to see franks playing anywhere other than special teams, right now we only have one starter, and one guy with potential at cornerback;and you say its not as big a need as DE or LB? Completely disagree, we have three starters at LB and osi, kroy, mass, and matthews at DE. DT is almost as big a need because our DTs get hardly any push in the middle of the line which makes it difficult for our DEs to do squat. So DT is the only position i could see as an equal need. JMO

Well we are about to have osi lol
