Why The Falcons' Faith In Young Players Is Promising

Let me tell you a story about a man named Brandon Weeden.

Weeden has been the butt of many a joke, the oldest quarterback ever drafted, the first round pick for the lowly Browns. There's a very good chance Weeden is simply not a viable starting quarterback in the NFL, and he's already 29 years old. The story I'm here to tell isn't really about that, but it's worth acknowledging.

The story I want to tell about Weeden is a story about giving up. Even before the Browns' former braintrust was unceremoniously kicked to the curb, there were whispers that Weeden wouldn't be the starter. All the new front office has done is trash him behind the scenes, but now that they're out of viable options to challenge him, they're muting their criticism and rolling with Weeden. You know, a guy who now knows no one on his own team believes in him, a guy who has every reason to think the team thinks he's going to fail.

This is beyond foolish, to be blunt. Teams routinely invest high draft picks in players, judge them lacking after a year and never really give them a shot. The NFL is an impatient league, now more than ever, but that impatience can lead to quality players being buried and other players having their development wrecked. The thinking is that you can't afford to waste a lot of time with these players, and you can almost understand the logic with someone like Weeden, even if the Browns have cycled through comically bad quarterbacks for years now.

The Falcons have been far from immune to this. We all saw it with Lawrence Sidbury, who seemed to be growing into a nice player before attitude or work ethic got him benched a year ago. We've seen the Falcons limit chances for young players or cut them outright, as was the case with William Middleton, a serviceable corner for the Jaguars who went on the chopping block way too early with Atlanta. And we watched the Falcons not match Vance Walker's contract, though we still don't know entirely what happened there. They're not perfect, I'd say, and they've been too committed to sinking the vast majority of snaps into veterans. It's both the curse of a contender and an unnecessary roadblock for young talent.

That may finally be changing. The Falcons are showing signs of being ready to give significant snaps to players like Cliff Matthews, Jonathan Massaquoi and Travian Robertson, young defenders with loads of potential who might have languished in a different year. In 2013, with the Falcons seemingly committed to building more talent through the draft, the defense is going to feature youth and lots of it.

This is encouraging to me, because no team stays competitive for long without cultivating that young talent. The Falcons are luckily set at quarterback, so the Weeden example may not be the best one. But it's good to know that a team hungry for a Super Bowl isn't going to sink all its time and energy into finding more old guys to stick under a slamming window, even if the young guys take more time and energy to develop.

It may not pay immediate dividends, but a little patience can go a long way. The outstanding question, of course, is whether it will pay dividends in 2013. That debate I leave to you.

Losing Vance Walker still upsets me. We had a 7th round pick who played for cheap and played well. He was about to have a breakout season in my opinion, and we could have kept him for cheap. Guys like that are very valuable and those are the guys you keep.

********, we aren't exactly a team desperate for success.

Until we ink a defensive lineman or hit the jack pot on the draft.

You can BS all you wan't but SF and SH exposed our inability to get pressure and allow our opponents to create explosive plays against us.

Now we haven't made a single off season move to this point to correct this, and that is a fact.

Call it ******** all you want, but your being delusional if you think rolling with some 7th and 5th rounders for 3 of our four front defensive lineman is a good thing..

You are still being ********, free agency is 2 weeks old, we have 11 draft picks, and June 1 cuts.

We aren't rolling with anything right now cause our first game is not until Sept. sick of people flipping out at our current roster when we have months in free agency and 11 draft picks to change things.

Isn't this just speculation at this point. There are still free agent ends available and the draft. We can't just assume that we are rolling with the current roster. There are only 3 DEs on the current roster.

Aside from that Sidbury being burried on the depth chart because of attitude is speculation as well.

I think SIdbury is really the only player you can point to where we have allowed them to languish on the bench. The young players that have made our football team have been allowed to work their way into the rotation ie. Bierman, Owens, Walker, Reynolds, Hawley, Franks, etc.

Our coaching staff does give our young players a chance to develop which is a huge departure some of the previous regimes ie. Mora.

I'm saying it is to early to see how this shakes out, we might go with some younger players as starters if they do well in camp, it is certainly leaning towards having the younger guys get more playing time. It is ******** to start flipping out and draw any conclusions at this point about anything.

So you agree that rolling with our current setup without any changes is not a solution, So when I make a statement that doing so is delusional, yet you make a trolling comment by accusing a fellow poster of being ********. When in reality you agree with it the comment that if we went without current set up it would be because FA, and our draft where disasters.

This article is Now new news or revelation for the Falcons. We have stood by countless youngsters, waiting for them to mature and I would mention Roddy White, Jenkins, Moore, Decoud, Peria, Beirman, Hawley and Johnson, Weems, and others. This GM believes in his drafting abilities and see's fit to stand with whom he's brought in come **** or high water.

I think its smart. I think its Cap wise and I think its a Huge reason we are a Winner after being such a loser for such a long time. You have to create a vision, a style, form a mantra and then stick to it. Its like sticking with your OC of DC thru a bad year. Its the reason the Raiders are a disaster, the Cowboys, the Browns to name a few. Look at the Dolphins. Its a carousel down there.

Not here and I applaud the move, the faith and the Balls it takes to stick to your guns and your plan.

Sidbury gone. Walker gone.

Youth movement...heck no.

To many instances of TD getting older players to fill in gaps...Cox/Sander/Bwill/Hayden/Polite/Hope/Peterson/last years Samoans etc.

I'd say, slide of hand and smoke and mirrors...movement. Just get it right...don't sell me no B.S.

are we seriously that butthurt over a message board bet?

The dude got banned multiple times before our wager played out and he then comes back after he had won. If he had of lost he'd have never shown up or indicated who he was. Typical of his ilk. Now, lets talk about the Falcons.

Funny how yesterday I was talking to my buddy about this. And my thought on this is that well one I agree and think this is what we are trying to do, we are getting younger on defense big time and taking a huge risk with as of now these no name DEnds and possibly LBS and Corners. You look at our D and u can name Babs,Spoon,Asante,Moore,Decoud the rest people will say who? And after this draft it will be more who?? And u think our FO is ok with letting such a young D go out their and play and develop. WHY you ask well we have built a young power house offense that can carry this team and let us take such a risk with our defense. Yes Jackson is 30 gonzo will prob retire. But we have quizz behind Jackson and young receivers plus a young QB. Is this a risk definitely but u think it's a Rusk we are willing to take for if it succeedes we have built a young powerful all around team to be able to contend for the next 6-10 yrs. And I think that is how we are looking at things. Now this is just my opinion but if this is how it is then I agree with takiNg thus risk now. It's a risk reward kind of league. I'm glad we are takin our risk now rather than when ur mat b to late.
