2010: 6-7 (3-5)
2009: 7-6 (4-4)
2008: 5-7 (3-5)

Total: 62-63 (26-54)

Only 2 Top 25 finishes (Both #22 in the AP Poll in 2015 & 2016)

3-2 in Bowl Games (2 Music City, 1 Outback, 1 TaxSlayer & 1 Chick-Fila Bowl appearance)

1 Life Championship

To be under .500 in the past 10 years is unacceptable and 26-56 in SEC play is just horrible.  It sounds like Currie is going to redo his head coaching target board since his top targets are not going to happen.  This hire could end up costing Currie his job if he doesn't get it right.

To put it into perspective, compare it to Vanderbilt and Kentucky.

Vanderbilt

  • 2008: 7-6 (4-4)
  • 2009: 2-10 (0-8)
  • 2010: 2-10 (1-7)
  • 2011: 6-7 (2-6)
  • 2012: 9-4 (5-3)
  • 2013: 9-4 (4-4)
  • 2014: 3-9 (0-8)
  • 2015: 4-8 (2-6)
  • 2016: 6-7 (3-5)
  • 2017: 5-7 (1-7)
  • TOTAL: 48-72 (22-56)

Kentucky

  • 2008: 7-6 (2-6)
  • 2009: 7-6 (3-5)
  • 2010: 6-7 (2-6)
  • 2011:5-7 (2-6)
  • 2012: 2-10 (0-8)
  • 2013: 2-10 (0-8)
  • 2014: 5-7 (2-6)
  • 2015: 5-7 (2-6)
  • 2016: 7-6 (4-4)
  • 2017: 7-5 (3-5)
  • TOTAL: 53-71 (20-60)

TOTALS

  • Tennessee = 62-63 (26-54)
  • Kentucky = 53-71 (20-60)
  • Vanderbilt = 48-72 (22-56)

That's honestly pathetic for a program like Tennessee.

Yup but this is the new norm, I don’t see it getting better.

Sad but true for the immediate future. It just doesn't seem right for Tennessee to be on the same level as Kentucky and Vanderbilt when I grew up during the 90s and it was Tennessee and Florida fighting it out for the right to win the SEC every year.

 Good Lord!

I would never have guessed that Tennessee had that record the last 10 years.  It says a lot when Butch was actually the high point.

Not surprising. They gotta go all in on Leach, right?

They could've had him years ago but botched it big time. UT fail

it's the 3rd time they have reached out to him and they keep being turned down.. they screwed up the first time as you said.

I will be surprised if it’s not Tee Martin at this point.. it’s a safe hire for the AD and the fans/boosters will accept him with open arms.

After hearing the intervies today from john adams, chris low, and bruce feldman there are a lot of coaches who wouldn't leave a stable position for the volunteer job due to the turmoil and how things are being ran there at this time.. their potential list of candidates isn't very big after what happened with schiano and with with how currie is handling the job search.  cutcliffe turned down the vols for a 3rd time.

Tee Martin while a very risky hire because of no HC experience, would be the best choice at this point. I agree with you that most coaches will avoid Tennessee like the plague but UT is home to Tee and I don’t seeing him turn down that opportunity if it actually comes to fruition.

Also Currie is one who screwed this up anyway. If UGA has tried to hire Schiano I would’ve protested too, just horrible

timing is even more important starting this year with early signing day in december.  i think it's one reason you saw coaches fired before the end of the season at a number of programs.  it's so important if you plan on making a change fire your coach when the decision is made and get the replacement so they can work on the recruiting class so the losses are minimal.  there are two guys the vol's want back bad in cade mayes and taylor and they need to move quickly so they can have their guy start working on those players.  i know taylor is signing early and if does that it for him.  tee martin would be a guy who can recruit very well so he could quickly get on them and try and sell his vision.  tee martin is a very risky hire just due to the lack of head coaching experience (been a coordinator for a few years and position coach otherwise), but he is a guy who the boosters will love and the fans will have patience for.  they screwed up the previous 3 hires so they better hope tee martin is the guy who can turn things around.

Schiano is a joke hire, he has no business coaching any SEC school right now. Currie should’ve had numerous more options before even getting to Schiano. The Penn St stuff has very little to do with it from my stand point

I look at it this way... no one knows everything that went on during the Sandusky era at Penn St other than the people that were there. Schiano very well may be 100% innocent of the claims... *but* to be there during that time it certainly attaches a bit of a stigma/taint right or wrong.

Couple that with the general indications that he was a **** during his time at Rutgers, continued to be that way at Tampa regarding leaking Freeman's results and also the MRSA outbreak in their locker rooms (or w/e it was)... There isn't anything about that guy that would get me excited to have him at my program.

If I look at my list of available coaches that I think might take the job and I've got Schiano on the list with others that I like relatively as much, it's hard to say... yeah edge goes to Schiano. If he was leaps and bounds better than my alternatives, fine... but I refuse to believe he was the absolute best available... ****... I'd hire Tressel off the trash heap before I'd go after Schiano.

Seems a bit harsh.

Likely a lawsuit actually. Saw a reference to this last night, but while in most states, it would not be... because they have like a blanket right to throw you out for whatever reason, but in Tennessee, they passed some kind of umbrella freedom of speech coverage to include stadiums/campus, which likely means he was being removed unlawfully... puts the whole chain of events in jeopardy for the university. I believe it was said he broke his arm... don't know if true. #theinternet
