DeMarcus Ware restructures deal

Updated: February 27, 2013, 8:32 PM ETESPN.com news services

The Dallas Cowboys have restructured the contract of Pro Bowl outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

The reworked deal converts $5 million of this season's base salary into a signing bonus, saving the Cowboys $4 million against the cap, according to a source familiar with the deal.

In addition to Ware, the Cowboys now plan to restructure the contracts of about a dozen players to get under the salary cap by March 12, according to a source. One of those players the club approached was cornerback Orlando Scandrick, according to a source. That deal has yet to be finalized.

The deal with Ware could be an indication the Cowboys do not expect to complete negotiations to extend Tony Romo's contract and lower his team-high $16.8 million salary cap figure before March 12.

Information from ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, ESPN's Ed Werder and ESPNDallas.com's Calvin Watkins used in this report.

Jason Witten and guards Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau have all agreed to restructure their deals as well. In addition, Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that cornerback Brandon Carr has also restructured the five-year, $50.1 million deal he signed with the team before last season. Carr had a fully guaranteed $14.3 million salary coming his way in 2013 so the restructure is far from a surprise. In fact, Hill reports that it was built into the initial deal and Thursday’s move will save the team $10.5 million under the cap.

Archer reports defensive tackle Jay Ratliff and cornerback Orlando Scandrick are also on the list of moves the Cowboys would like to make. Along with the previously reported request that linebacker Dan Connor take a pay cut if he wants to remain in Dallas,

The Cowboys announced that wide receiver Miles Austin and center Ryan Cook have both agreed to restructure their contracts.

Does Carr make more than Romo.... Holy moldy batman!

The Cowboys avoided restricted free agency with Phil Costa by signing the center to a two-year deal Saturday.

Instead of giving Costa a $1.3 million restricted tender for this year, the Cowboys signed him through 2014 in a deal that lowers his cap charge and helps save money on the cap this season.

Since Thursday, the Cowboys have gone from more than $20 million over the cap to now about $4-5 million under after restructuring several players, including Brandon Carr, DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten and Miles Austin.

Costa only played three games in 2012, but finished just one. However, that game in Baltimore was arguably Costa's best of his career as he helped pave the way for 227 rushing yards, which set a Ravens club record for an opponent.

A back injury that lingered all through camp forced Costa out after three plays of the season opener. He didn't play until the fifth game against Baltimore but then suffered a severe ankle injury against Carolina and eventually went to IR.

Signed as a rookie free agent in 2010, Costa has started 20 games in his career, including 16 in 2011.

Brandon Carr signed a five-year, $50.1 million free-agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys last offseason. One year later, the cornerback restructured the contract to convert most of his $14.3 million 2013 salary into a signing bonus.

Carr doesn't mind the quick adjustment.

"I restructured my contract basically just to free up some money to get some more players in," Carr told The Dallas Morning News on Friday. "I'm a team player. I believe in getting as many guys as possible that can help us get to our goal, and that's to win a championship.

"This is another step in the right direction, not only myself, but other guys restructured as well. That's a good sign that guys are willing to restructure their contracts in order to get new guys in or get better guys in to help us, hopefully, get a Super Bowl."

DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten, Miles Austin and Ryan Cook also restructured their contracts, for total salary-cap savings between $20-$25 million. We'll see if it's enough for the team to keep pass rusher Anthony Spencer, who had a career-high 11 sacks in 2012.
