raumin
I don't get why some people think we are going to keep Abe unless he takes a HUGE pay cut to be a 3rd down DE.TD is not going to keep the cap bloated on players past their prime, on the wrong side of 30, and who make over 5+ million. He is going to press on with a younger DE, who will be thrown into the fire and a **** of a lot cheaper. Unless Abe takes a HUGE pay cut or there is a reasonable trade or FA move that justifies the economics. Every GM has to make shrewd moves that hurt the team in the short run to make a better situation in the long term. And for those who think "He was our only pass rush", guys he wasn't blowing up LTs every game and we had little pass rush all year coming one play away from being in the SB.For the long term you have to press on. Peyton
I can see the Falcons cutting Abe if they are trying to have the worst defense in NFL history next year. That's the only way it really would make sense to me.

Numbaz
I don't see him being cut or traded this season. The Falcons have been looking for a pass-rusher for 4 years. I do believe they'll have a lot more emphasis than ever before to find his replacement and once we do find that guy, Abe will be let go next season. With little over 1 million in cap space TD has to go younger, cheaper or pay the same amount to someone who can play more reps.

That would save us a ton of cap space.Yes, some guys are going to be cut. Specifically, Dunta and Turner.John Abraham is not going to be cut. muskokas finest ©
Abe is productive enough for his money, especially given the fact he has nobody to take the pressure off of him.
raumin
Abe is productive enough for his money, especially given the fact he has nobody to take the pressure off of him.I just checked his stats and for 2012 he did have 10 sacks. For some reason it does not feel like it. I just think he is going to be a cap causality

1989Fan
Even as a pass rush specialist, 6M isnt a ton for 10 sacks a year. With that said, Abraham played more defensive snaps than any other DE on the roster last season. So I dont know why people see him as a 3rd down only guyhonestly. The ONLY way I see him cut is if the team makes a move solely to a 3-4 and they dont see him as a good fit. If 5/6 mill isn't huge in the grand scheme of things then cutting him makes less sense if it does not damper anything.

g-dawg
yeah, the absolute worst move the Falcons could make in offseason is cutting John Abraham. We have him at a cheap enough price and he is our only consistent sack producer - good job raumin. BRILLIANT!

DonOfThemBirds
Abe is still one of the best 4-3 DEs in the NFL despite being 34 years of age and is not getting paid top DE money. No need to get rid of him.
Big_Dog
Abe's contract is up a million to $4.25 thanks to an escalator clause. Is that an outrageous price for a 10 sack player? I could probably get a sack a game for 4.25 million. He needs to improve if we keep him. He looks to be giving it a lot of effort in the games but always gets pushed out and away. Only when the qb gets flushed out of the pocket his way does he actually get a sack and any of us could do that.
