Gonzo Makes Or Breaks Atl In 2013

Priority #1 is signing gonzo for one more year. Gonzo makes everyone on our team better and gives us one of the most dynamic offenses in the league. If Gonzo retires well be forced to use our #1 pick on a TE if we expect to keep an upper tier offensive unit and not regress. No chance a rookie TE outside of the first round contributes immediately at an elite level. We need Gonzo so we can snag a DE with our first pick because we need a pash rush terribly! We also need a RB within the first 3 rounds to help sustain drives and close games out too and if GOnzo retires that's one round later getting a RB too. Pull out all the stops fellas. We need Gonzo more than we know!!!!

You're not serious are you? First, If Gonzo doesn't come back, we aren't forced to use our #1 on a TE. Second, If we can get a younger more explosive TE I think that's an upgrade over Gonzo. He has stellar hands, but he's not the only man that can catch a football. #RealTalk #ThinkAboutIt

Also - Have you ever heard of Free Agency?

...one more thing - Scott Case signed card is worth probably $.01 - just saying.

Scott Case was the best safety we ever had, that was just cold man ....

Yeah I'm serious. There are only 2 elite TEs in this years draft and neither will be there when we pick in the 2nd round. Tony G might not have blazing speed but when you run precise routes and catch everything thrown your way speed takes a back seat. Gonzo commands safety and LB attention which takes less focus off of Julio & Roddy. Look at all the first downs, TDs, and pivotal catches he had this year. If we try to fill his role with a FA or above avg rookie we digress in every facet of offense. Our defense is horrendous and keeping TG would allow our front office to focus on building a D that can actually get a stop as opposed to refill a humongous void on offense and Matt Ryan's safety net.

You know who was the 3rd down/ red zone specialist before Gonzo? Finneran.

Yes, Gonzo is really valuable and I would be very happy if the 5% comes true.

If he doesn't however, he'll be replaced, just like Turner, by a committee. They'll sign a FA like Cook or draft a TE 3-4 round, give some catches to HD, find a vet WR like Finn, get a RB who can catch out of the backfield, get Ewing back and end up with a more versatile, harder to defend offense than before.

I love TG but people tend to forget we went 11-5 without TG and we had a rookie QB. Our bigger priority on offense is to fix the running game.

Round 1 should go to the best pass rusher still on the board. Rounds 2-5 should be used on the best smash mouth RB that at least has decent speed. Even if TE stays retired I would rather pick one up in FA then use a 1-3 rd pick on them.

I don't agree with this. Gonzo is one of the worst run blockers on the team. Go check the numbers. He is no longer explosive and has missed his fair share of pivotal throws: See the end of the first Saints game this past season. I'm not trying to sound anti-Gonzo - what I am doing is trying to come up with ways to lessen the blow when he announces his retirement.....whenever that will be. I also don't have it in my head that Gonzo is the best offensive player on this team. More attention from Matt Ryan toward Julio Jones and Roddy White is a good thing in my book.

You just made my point for me. We have huge needs in getting Defense, RB, OL and solidifying a TE that knows the offense, has the trust of his teammates, one of the few members on this team with true leadership quality, that is a virtual lock for an 80 catch, 8+ TD, 900+ yard season is invaluable. We were exposed in the playoffs and 1 Tony Gs return would allow us to focus on addressing everything 1 round earlier in the draft, allow us a huge FA signing, etc. people are ridiculous who think we can just bring in a FA TE or draft someone in the 3rd or 4th round without taking a monumental step backwards as an offense.

With Roddy and Julio we don't need TG back. Would love to have him for another year, but a decent slot guy and a decent TE who can maybe grab 30 balls a year would not slow our O down one bit. We need to worry about an OG that can move a pile and a fast RB to replace Turner. Both are much more important than getting Gonzo back. We might get a OG the first round if there is a stud available, but the first two picks are going defense more than likely. I doubt we address TE in this draft unless there is a steal.

If we fix our run game then our offense will be better then last year

2012 offense + legit run game - TG = Better than our 2012 offense with TG

It is pretty simple Run game and Pass rush our probably our 2 biggest issues we need to get fixed, after that is Rush defense. TE is way down the list of issues if TG stays retired.

Check the numbers? Almost 1000 yards and 8 TDs. Yes Matt Ryan may focus more on Julio and Roddy but with Gonzo gone so will the Defenses. Why do you think Julio and Roddy are lobbying so hard to get Gonzo back? It's not because they just think he's a nice guy. They understand what he does for the offense. Just wish some of the people on this message board did too.

Im in the minority on Tony G. He is still a machine and catches every ball that is thrown to him. He is a top 5 Tight End right now and at his age that is amazing. HOWEVER, the only facet of his game that Im not too big on is his lateral speed. He can make the impossible catch but after that he is going down. I would prefer a Tight end that could stretch the field. Tony G is the perfect 3rd and short Te, but what about the other situations? I would love to have a Gronk type of Tight end that could take it to the house....and yes i know Gronk isn't available

Do you remember 2008? We didnt have Gonzo then. whether Gonzo comes back or not we need to upgrade our run game. We can do that by drafting a Guard(Warford) and by drafting a RB to compliment Quizz and Rodgers. I also agree that we need to invest in upgrading the 3rd or 4th WR to take up some of the production that Gonzo gave us. There are some good options in Free Agency to serve as as a decent option to replace Gonzo.

TG retiring is out of our hands and is up to him. The team is trying to get him back but he may not come back. We have to many other issues to spend a 1st Rd draft pick on. TE is not an issues that needs a 1st rd pick.

How does his yardage and number of TD's have anything to do with his run blocking abilities? Go back and read what I said... I was referring you to his run blocking %'s versus other TE's/Players... #CatchUp

So you'd rather have an average TE that is an excellent run blocker over a top 3 TE that's a lock to get nearly 1000 yards and 8 TDs a year? Last I checked besides this year we've always been a top 3 running offense so I think our lack of run game was more prevelant due to offensive play calling & Turners digression over Gonzo's run blocking ability.

BEST THREAD EVAH !!!!

I trust Gonzales can read...

I'm gonna guess he believes he carried the Falcons to thier first playoff win last season.

All this talk about how he wasn't this and wasn't that will ring his ears.

As a Seahawk fan I know it wasn't Mattie Ice that took 25 seconds to get your FG kicker within range and salvage what was an almost sure loss to a nail biting win against the only team in the NFC that had proven they had San Francisco's number. It was THE clutch catch of your teams season.

I'm certain our GM is on Gonzales speed dial right now and they are only trying to figure out how much of Paul Allen's pocket change it will take to gaurantee Seatle and Tony's Super Bowl Ring.

Russell Wilson loves Tony G. We love Russell Wilson. Paul Allen would like to get a championship before he dies.

You guys can do nicely without Tony? I like your thinking!

Pretty sad it takes a Seattle fan to agree w me as opposed to my own "Falcon fans". Tony G is a beast and most of the people on this thread seem to be ok with losing him for some run of the mill FA or an unproven rookie. I usually tend to shy away from the message boards because people leave me baffled with their comments and this thread has proven to be the perfect example.
