Is Drafting/signing An Elite Return Speacialist As Important As Getting An Elite Pass Rusher Or A Right Gaurd ?

Recommended Posts

Watching the super bowl confirms for me that having an effective return game is just as important as having explosive offense or an agressive pass rush, when we had Eric Weems we had offense we just needed to get better on defense(and we still do) but if we still had Weems we probably could be in the big game,so does finding a elite return speacialist belong in the same category of finding a DE and a OG ?

I'm sorry but Eric Weems has never been an elite returner. He's a solid all-around special teamer but he's not the threat Ted Ginn or Jacoby Jones is.

Agreed. To answer the topic question, I'd say a return specialist is not even close to being as important. The league has artificially devalued KO returns and punt returners only get the opportunity to return a couple/few times per game...and both can be neutralized completely (KO through the end zone, directional or short punting). That said a good returner is an advantage so I'd like to have one.

It's worth mentioning in this thread that many analysts expect Jacoby Jones to be cut by the Ravens unless a restructure takes place, as they will be heavily over the cap after assigning the exclusive franchise tag to Flacco, and have other key players that need to be resigned.

I hope the Ravens do cut him or don't restructure his contract,he could be our big free agent signing of the year rather than getting Cliff Avril or Jared Cook,we can get good value at those positions in the draft.

The whole " if we still had Weems we'd be in the big game" comment threw me off. I do think we need a more effective returner, our starting field position would indeed improve.

I also would say "yes" , the need is as important as a pass rushing DL ( either DE or DT) and a Guard. The good thing is you usually don't have to use a high draft position on a specialist.

I would never put Weems in the elite returners lane.. He had one good year. What is he doing now? Nothing. The need is there but you can get a returner in any round pretty much. Those guys are usually hidden Gems.. Just about every level of college has ones.. TD just has to find him. Now pass rushers are a different thing.

Yes finding a return guy is extremely important this offseason. A guy like Ace Sanders who is a game changer would benefit the falcons greatly.

I completely agree. I've seen a bunch of South Carolina games and Ace Sanders would be a great pick in the later rounds. He's great on screens which Koetter loves and he could possibly function as a slot receiver too.
