Ive had a chance to digest the season (incl. playoff loss) and i feel im ready to do this. Ive read way to much @#$% this board that is so over the top and ridiculous from a team that was 1 completion away from being in the superbowl. This is a healthy way for me to VENT. The Rating this season is (...../10)

OFFENCE

QB - Matt Ryan : hes getting better every year which considering his run game is going in the other direction im pretty happy overall. Hes not an elite QB like Brady, Mannings, Rogers or Brees but he is a very good QB who could win us a Superbowl with the right personnel around him. Throws too many picks and lacks a rocket arm or great deep ball but is a great leader (8.5/10)

RB - Turner : Ageing back who tries to sidestep tackles instead of running thru them. Granted the Oline play was average in the run game but he looked to me to be overweight and slow. His days are numbered in atlanta and should be a cap casulaty (5/10)

RB - Rogers : Solid No.2 who with improved line play could be a very good player for us. Made some eye catching plays thru the year to make 1st downs for a back his size. Poor average stems from hits at the line with no opening. Requires either a very good oline (unlikely to happen short term) to be a no.1 back or more likely to stay the no.2 as we draft a no.1 back with better size and speed (7/10)

WR - White : Very good season from a guy people keep saying will start slowing down. Lacks true size or speed but just makes plays. Love his attitude on the field and consistency (actually improved his hands this year) - love his attitude with Julio, no DIVA here. Lack of TDs hurts his rating (8/10)

WR - Julio : Great season from a 2nd year guy. True deep threat who will get more intermediate balls once his route running improves (9/10)

TE - Gonzo : Great season from a ageing Vet. Mr 3rd down. Would love one more season as i think we could go 1 spot deeper next year. Has lost speed but uses body positionment to perfection (9/10)

WR - Douglas : Inconsistent player who doesnt seem to see much of the ball being the 4th or 5th (after screens to rb) option. makes some great plays and then missus some others he should make. Should see more ball if/with gonzo retires (6.5/10)

OT - Baker : Solid if not unspectacular play in his contract year. Keeper at a decent price but still probe to getting out muscled by some ends. IMHO his lack of strong blocking was a big reason our run game dropped significantly with him starting over svitek (7/10)

OG - Blalock : OK year but down from expectations. this guy could be a probowler but instead fell into nomans land as far as his play went - not good/not bad... (7/10)

C - McClure : killing our run game and got jacked often on one on one assignment plays. Love your service but time to go (5.5/10)

OG - Konz : rookie got owned early but played better later in the stretch. Not a natural fit at G and should go to C clearly next season (5/10). Reynolds before injury (6.5/10)

OT - Clabo : Overall an OK season but like blalock didnt have the same impact as previous seasons. A definate keeper and one of the few guys who does try and force a run game (8/10)

DEFENCE

DE - Abraham : only real pass rush expert but clearly slowing with age from what he was. 10 sacks but many at meaningless times and no longer a game changer. Can still get the strip on QB sacks but not the player he was (7/10)

DE/DT - Babs : Most consistent player we had all season in DL. Plenty of TFL and always making plays at the right time. Very confused by the trade Babs talk i keep seeing as IMHO hes our only above average DT this season (7.5/10)

DT - Peters : best player last season and only started hitting some late form. Hopefully is right to go for next season. Happy to strike this season off from the injury (4/10)

DT - Walker : Solid DT who gives his all every play. Good backup player but not the answer as a starter IMHO. Lacks impact plays like TFL/sacks etc. (6/10)

DT Peria Jerry : average impact. Not an issue if he wasnt a 1st rounder. Not sure he has the tools now to develop into the one gap pass rushing DT he was drafter for (babs long term replacement). Shame as i liked the pick initially but the injury has screwed him as i see it (5.5/10)

DE/OLB - Kroy : lacks elite skills but plays with a high energy motor you gotta love. Nolans mister versatile. Tries his heart out on every play and although lacks sacks is forcing hurries (7.5/10)

LB - Nicholas : good season overall but got exposed in the playoffs by good TE's. Good no.3 linebacker but not quite up to scratch as the no.2 every down lb (6.5/10)

LB - Weatherspoon : inconsistent season but came home well after injury. Will get better with more experience calling the defence. All down lb who lays the wood and plays with passion (7.5/10)

MLB - Dent : 2nd year guy who got the start in 4-3 packages and played horrible early but came on as the season went. Like Owens he will get better with time (5/10)

CB - Asante : Thankyou TD for this trade - easily our best most consistent DB all year. Hands looked rusty early but came home late with a wet sail. May have sealed grimes fate (8.5/10)

CB - Dunta : wow extremely inconsistent season. At times looked great in short coverage, laying out receivers or blitzing the qb and other times looked like he was old and had lost a step and couldnt tackle to save himself. Either he or grimes are gone next season unless he takes a huge pay cut (6.5/10)

CB - McClain : May be the reason grimes is allowed to leave also as with him and owens you have too solid nickels. Most improved player in the secondary but not sure hes ready for full time starter(7/10)

CB/FS - Franks : horrible on punt return (granted no fumbles) and not the answer at safety - expect to see him released if we keep one of grimes or dunta (5/10)

CB - Owens : 3rd or 4th cb at best. No longer the teams whipping boy - kudos to him (6/10)

FS - Decoud : solid season if inconsistent at times. Made some great plays and pooor plays but certainly not the reason we sucked in the secondary. Needs to work on his tackling (7/10)

FS/SS - Hope : great backup and solid player when needed for moore in limited action (7/10)

SS - Moore : overall a good season when not injured. Punishing tackler who truelly lays the wood from the secondary. Shows some of the skills that were projecting him as a top 10 draft pick in his junior year. rating hurt from injury lost time (7.5/10)

Kicker - Matt Bryant : pretty clutch apart from mid season hiccup. Still a keeper but only for a season or two - look to pickup or draft a late replacement (8.5/10)

Punter - Bosher : slow start developed into a very solid punter and kickoff specialist before a late season hiccups in playoffs - punts in seattle game were horrible - (7/10)

KR - Rogers : solid all season but lacked true breakaway speed to go the distance (7.5/10)

PR - Douglas : fair catch expert with very little return skill (5/10)

OK thats it - biggest off season question is whether they keep either Grimes or Dunta or both???. Will Turner be cut (id say yes) and do we give Peria another year?

EDIT - bumped gonzo and Julio up 0.5 to a 9.

Most of it is reasonable, I do disagree highly on Rodgers though, we got a lot out of the touches he did get. He has to be 9ish, if it wasn't for him our running game would have been even worse and Ryan would have been blitzed and hit a lot more this year. I think we got a special player with this guy, he's one of my favorite players right now.

I was bummed about Peters, but I had a feeling he wouldn't be the same this year after the injury. Hopefully he rebounds next year. Jerry should have been 86'd two years ago, he's pretty much IMO the DT version of Busterson.

I sure hope Moore starts doing a better job of staying healthy (assuming he even comes back next year, I think he will because DT will overpay for him a bit thanks to the hype factor). Dunta gets a lot of flak on these boards but other than Spoon and Moore he's the only guy that players will fear in terms of laying the wood. It may be time to look to the future though, with his concussion history and both our starting corners in their 30's, we will need to address CB soon in the draft. I've never liked the idea of drafting a player and banking on them being a quality starter from day 1, especially in the secondary.

Ive tried to keep this realistic - i loved rogers play but when you average under 4 ypc at tb and only get a handful of TD's you cant be 9. He has huge upsaide but based on this seasons form he is around 7.5 (arguably lower or higher depending on how you rate the line)

My points I disagree with:

I'm discounting (see what I do here) Aaron Rogers a tad. My boy is a pack fan so I saw a lot of games this year and the dude was not much better than Ryan, honestly. I would actually go out on a limb and say there is not a single QB playing at an elite level. Brady was closer than most until the Ravens game. I would only give Rogers an edge cause he has a ring.

I'd give McLain a 6.5 at highest. He came out strong, but I think he hit his ceiling by November. I think he is good, just not THAT good.

Daunta is worth the contract now, even though he really was not two years ago. I think we keep him, asante, McClain, and Owens. Franks. Hmmm. I still hold out hope for him.

Lastly, Bryant is a 9 out of ten. Trust me. One of the best kickers in the NFL.

As much as I hate to say this, Turner should be gone next year. That 4th and 5 should have been a running situation. We need a big time running back to complement our pass first offense badly. McFadden's contract is up in Oakland, but to me that was what really cost us the NFC--the complete lack of running game. Rodgers is great, but he shouldn't be outperforming Turner.

I'd give Matty Melt a 9/10. He did carry this season regardless of face planting like an idiot in the playoffs.

in fact let me redo your list:

QB - Matt Ryan : Is elite, and carried our team breaking several Falcon records. Still gets nervous in the playoffs, and makes the same frustrating mistakes like a stubborn mule. He did however end the post season with a near 400 yard game, and put the ball in the right spots. (9/10)

RB - Turner: Anyone wants a turner burger? it is done. (5/10)

RB - Rogers : Solid No.2 (7/10)

WR - White : Team's best WR, very underrated and a fantastic route runner. Very sure handed, tough to block, and clutch. (9/10)

WR - Julio : Best overall football player on the team. Can run with the ball, catch passes anywhere, and take screen to the house, aswell as block very good. Only problem is he has butterfingers (9.5/10)

WR - Douglas : Great hands, but not much separation. Not a Wes Welker type, like TD touted him to be, and could never ever be one. Probably very good as a 3/4th option, but doesn't hold onto passes too well, and doesn't run routes or find space well either (6/10)

OT - Baker : Did what we asked him to do: block someone! (8/10)

OG - Blalock : OK year but a far cry from who mike smith thinks he is . this guy could be a probowler but instead fell into no-mans land as far as his play went - decent/not bad... (7/10)

C - McClure : He did well calling the plays, but isn't athletic enough to remain the starter at C (7/10)

OG - Konz : rookie got owned early but played better later in the stretch. Not a natural fit at G and should go to C clearly next season (7/10). Reynolds - before injury (6/10)

OT - Clabo : Great overall, our best Olineman. Still struggles against fast pass rushers.(9/10)

DEFENCE

DE - Abraham : Great player, but is about as old as Yoda and Master Splinter combined. How we didn't draft a competent DE to replace our best rusher of the last 5 years is baffling, let alone emphatically ********. He's still dominant after all those years, and is hit or miss in the run game. It is funny yet alarming that Abraham was born back when dinosaurs walked the planet, but is our second or third best defensive player. (8/10)

DE/DT - Babs : Our best DT, and came up big several times for us, very soft and light though, and very movable in the run game. We'd be well served putting a real NT next to him to make up for his lack of size. Still he was a monster rushing QB's up the middle (7/10)

DT - Peters : Frustrating, wildly inconsistent, and not a very good run fitter. Useless against the pass. (4/10)

DT - Walker : Second best DT this season, and would be a starter if he wasn't so Asstastic in the run game. He came up with several key stops including the off season and definitely a key player off the bench (6/10)

DT Diarrhea Jerry : Hurricane ***** was an immense failure of epic proportions. He played extremely well the first 2 games and then as Mike Tyson would say: "faded into Bolivian." Just terrible against the pass, a decent run plugging DT but should be cut for a real starter. (4/10)

DE/OLB - Kroy : lacks elite pass rush skills but plays with a high energy motor you gotta love. Nolan's mister versatile but still not starter worthy. Gets you the average 4 coverage sacks a year, but takes bad angles and its a huge chose to ask him to get to the QB (5/10)

LB - Nicholas : Good season. Terrible post season. His play in the playoffs was a huge brain fart considering how well he played in the first few games. Probably not a 3 down LB, as he covers the TE about as worst as possibly imaginable. It is extremely bad when you need a GPS to locate your defensive assignment. He also failed to come up with key tackles over and over in the playoffs. (5/10)

LB - Weatherspoon : Second best overall player on defense, and perhaps our only difference maker in the front 7. His only problem is that he whiffs on tackles(8.5/10)

MLB - Dent : Waste of a 3rd round pick. Tackles hard on special teams, and occasionally when he fits the right gap. Is very slow, doesn't wrap up well, and covers about as well as a napkin in a cold harsh Siberian winter. Huge black hole in the middle of the defense, and if it wasn't for TD's stupidity we would've kept Lofton here. We absolutely have to replace him with a starter caliber MLB or move Weatherspoon here and draft another fast OLB in 1/2 rounds. (4/10)

CB - Asante : Thank you TD for this trade - easily our best most consistent DB all year. Hands looked rusty early but came home late with a wet sail. Very underrated tackler as well. A lot of times he has to be the last line of defense due to Decouldn't wrap up the ball carrier. (9/10)

CB - Dunta : If I didn't know who he was, or which team he played for I would bet he is a rhino. Sure he tackles and hits hard, and blows up screens very well. He also tackles with his helmet like an idiot, leading to many neck and head injuries, even worse missed tackles. He also tends to lose his man lot in coverage or give him too much space. (6/10)

CB - McClain : Our most underrated DB and finally someone who solidified our Nickle spot, tackles decently, and makes great plays on the ball (8/10)

CB/FS - Franks : Sucks and should be cut. About as useless as a banana peeler (1.5/10)

CB - Owens : 3rd or 4th cb at best. No longer the teams whipping boy - kudos to him (6/10)

FS - Decoud : solid season but very inconsistent. Made some great plays on the ball and ended up with 6 interceptions but tackles worse than a soccer player. Keep him here, but bare in mind that he's going to make plays that make you throw your shoes at the TV as our last line of defense (7/10).

FS/SS - Hope : great backup and solid player when needed for moore in limited action (7/10)

SS - Moore : overall a very good season when not injured. He made many impact plays, and the team's best DB tackler. I like how we used him as a LB sometimes and comes up strong in run support. (8/10)

Kicker - Matt Bryant : pretty clutch (8.5/10)

Punter - Bosher : Good season punter, a liability in the playoffs under pressure (5/10)

KR - Rogers : Mediocre returner, and fair catch professional. Obviously we were terrible in this area, and I look to us drafting a speed guy for this position. The fact we had Rodgers in this role is telling, as confused franks was an utter fail. (4/10)

PR - Douglas : Dances too much after the catch, needs to just get the damm ball upfield once caught (5/10)

Osiruz - I'm not gonna lie I laughed all thru your assessment

In retrospect I'd bump gonzo to a 9.5 - not much more he could do really and Julio to a 9. Asante is the only guy who could have got a 9 on defence and he lost a half point as he dropped way to many picks early. I'm a hard marker and a 9 is a standout season IMHO we only had a few who played to that level. Bryants mid season slump hurt his clear 9 also.

The Falcons season can be summed up in one word: FAILURE

Your post history could be said to be the same Swift 2.0

It is funny how fans NOW start losing their minds and become trolls, Now after 5 years of the best stretch for the Falcons ever, what on earth would you have been thinking during the 80's or 90's

Is trolling the board now really going to change things or make you feel better?

You're a weak fan

The season was not a failure. They won the NFC south. Number 1 seed. Won first playoff game in years. NFC runner up. Sounds like a fairly good season to me. Only two teams make the Superbowl.

We surrendered the biggest lead in NFCCG history. Ours was the biggest choke EVER in an NFCCG. That renders everything else worthless, pointless, and nothing more than paper tiger non-accomplishement accomplishments for pathetic homers to crow about.

Matt Bryant a 8.5??? Are You kidding me? This is the guy that saves our bacon time after time and you give him an 8.5 for a couple missed field goals?

5 missed FG's to be exact. And would've missed against Seattle had it not been for Pete Carrol. He is very good and accurate, however lacks the leg power. 9 would put him among the best kickers in the league like Janikowski, Blair Walsh, and Dawson, and he isn't that good. His FGs made percentage is good for 15th in the NFL.

Your just another weak fan who can deal with the ups and downs of the NFL, 4 points away from the superbowl and your acting like a little girl who got her lollipop stolen. Seen it a million times where weak minded fans lose their crap when things get tough. Swift is the perfect example of a fan who went insane, you are well on your way to following his path.

You'd be in a mental institution if you were a fan during the 80's and 90's this franchise is doing miles better then it ever did.

You'd be in a mental institution if you were a fan during the 80's and 90's this franchise is doing miles better then it ever did.

I've been a fan since Steve Bartkowski's rookie year.

I can still name most of the starters from the 1980 12-4 team.

I was a fan through both Marion Campbell regimes.

It is the fact that we're so close, yet so far, and sliding further down that gets me. The fact that we had an opportunity, then blew it, and now its all falling apart. Too many important pieces that are too old. Too many players that just are not as good as we thought they were--- nor as good as we needed them to be. We have more holes than we do means to fill them; by the time we fill those holes, new holes will have opened up due to age and free agency losses.

Anyone who thinks this team is on the precipice of "sliding further down" simply doesn't understand the NFL.

The Falcons have a full compliment of draft picks and enough cap space available (especially after ineffective dead weight is pruned from the roster) to pick up a free agent or two.

The more realistic scenario (for 2013) is that the Falcons will effectively plug the major holes....probably have a lesser record (how often can you replicate 13-3?) and be a stronger team.
