The Atlanta Falcons just put out their release for Sunday’s NFC Championship Game and there’s one page that jumped out at me.

It’s the one that breaks down Mike Smith’s 56-24 record in his first five seasons. We already know that’s the second-best record for the first five years for any coach (George Seifert started 62-18 as he inherited a dynasty).

But you can slice Smith’s record just about any way and it still is very impressive. Let’s take a look (and this is regular season only):

  • vs. the NFC 39-20

  • vs. the AFC 17-4

  • vs. the NFC South 17-13

  • Home 33-7

  • Away 23-17

  • 1 p.m. (ET) games 38-17

  • 4 p.m. (ET) games 11-3

  • Prime-time games 8-4

  • Indoors 38-13

  • Outdoors 18-11

  • Falcons score first 42-10

  • Falcons lead at halftime 44-2

  • Falcons lead going into fourth quarter 42-1

  • Falcons lead in time of possession 38-8

  • Falcons gain 300 yards 44-14

  • Hold opponent under 300 yards 23-1

  • Falcons have a 300-yard passer 10-8

  • Falcons have a 100-yard rusher 16-3

  • Falcons have a 100-yard receiver 26-12

  • Falcons win turnover battle 34-3

  • Falcons have five or fewer penalties 40-15

  • Falcons have 20 first downs 40-14

Smitty ball is not a myth. sure we come away with a win somehow, but it's the reason so many of us almost have to go to the ER after watching a Falcons game

This year there was no Smitty ball in most of the games this year. I agree execution needs to be better but Falcons might have been too aggressive.

We still won. It wasn't pretty, but we won.

yeah, I know. Hopefully next time we get a big lead like that, we keep it.

I think more and more, we're starting to see that it might be. Sure, some of the problem was playcalling. But if anything, many would argue that the plays called Sunday weren't conservative enough. Plus, some of it was also execution.
