Guest Fibonacci/Mashburn
So just wondering...........but is this more so Matt Ryan's scheme and game plans? how much does Koetter get involved in?- I'm just wondering if we could have got someone else and came out with the same Offense. 1989Fan
On NFL.com, they are saying it just locks him in for next season.Dirk Koetter is staying put.Citing a team source, NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Falcons offensive coordinator and head-coaching candidate has signed a contract extension with Atlanta through next season.A source told FOXSports.com's Alex Marvez the extension runs through next season.Koetter's name was gaining traction as seven teams continue their coaching searches. The 53-year-old assistant met with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday and had interviews scheduled with the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles. It's possible Koetter didn't like his chances of winning a job and chose a sure thing with Atlanta. He now returns to work with quarterback Matt Ryan and an offense that turned up the volume in 2012. Koetter is a well-respected offensive mind who helped Atlanta turn out a franchise-record 281.8 passing yards per game en route to grabbing the top seed in the NFC.Follow Marc Sessler on Twitter @MarcSesslerNFLAt least we know he is with the Falcons for another year.It would be nice to find a good understudy for him so when he does lave they can promote from within without disrupting the scheme again. daybumper
Koetter is smart . Used his name to get a ext since its being thrown out in interview process . He probably didnt feel he will have a real shot at the other jobs went back and hit up Blank for more $ . Smart business decision

I think that holds defenses accountable and plays to matts strengths. Let dirk and hopefully nolan and pat hill have another year to draft players to fit their schemes and see if we can improve upon a great start. This is how great teams are built! We just need to get people to want to stay or become falcons. I look at great winning teams of history like the 9ers cowboys new england and they had a winning foundation and be ome a destination for players. I think blank/td/smitty may be close to building something of greatness here but its going to need foundation. We need great coaches who want to stay. 1989Fan
Is this just a 1 year extension??yes it is. I think he was initially signed for 2 years, so he likely had a year left, but agreed to a raise to stay and focus his attentions n the playoffs. (and correct the pathetic offensive display against Tampa!)

sdogg
Lock Nolan down. Make him assistant HC.
RHEC
Now we just need to get Nolan to sign a contract extension.
maxatlanta
Sounds like he agreed to forgo HC opportunities in exchange for a raise. An extension that keeps him here 1 more year implies he was only signed to a 1 yr deal in the first place.

1989Fan
Lock Nolan down. Make him assistant HC.I agree with this, but even if he is an assistant HC it doesnt prevent ateam from promoting him to HC. Just prevents a lateral move.
AtlantaFalconPokerPro
I'm really proud of the FO for getting Dirk to stay. Although, I want Nolan to stay more than anything. With another draft, he is gonna have us rocking a top 10 D.
falconidae
Maybe the TATF drama queens can get some rest now. Oh wait. Blank needs to paper up Nolan before that can happen.Oh, there's alway something for the drama queens to focus on. Like how there won't be a TE on the roster in 6 weeks.Does this mean swift is gonna be butthurt all day?Naah, he's just posting a ton in the few days he has left. g-dawg
http://www.cincyjung...atlanta-falconshe signed for two years.1 year? 2 year extension? it makes no difference. He can still interview for HC positions in 2014. All it means is Koetter has decided not to take a HC job with another NFL team this year - if it was offered to him. That is all it means - we definitely have him for 2013 season.
4dabirds
Sounds like he agreed to forgo HC opportunities in exchange for a raise. An extension that keeps him here 1 more year implies he was only signed to a 1 yr deal in the first place. His gut feeling might tell him that if he were to get an HC job now, then he'd be on the hot seat by year 2. There is no patience in the NFL, and you have to catch lightning in a bottle to succeed early on. The QB class upcoming is not as strong, and all the bad teams have mediocre to bad QB's and they'll be looking to draft a new guy. Koetter knows he needs a great QB to make it happen, after 2014 he might have a better chance.
