But the Patriots have some self-scouting to do as well. They’ll roll back the tape on their recent games, with a pair of disappointing efforts against the 49ers and Jaguars sandwiched between stellar ones against the Houston Texans and Dolphins over the last month.

The Patriots players were in meetings on Monday, and will be off Tuesday for New Years. They’ll be back to work on Wednesday, with practices schedule for both Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, but get Wild Card weekend off.

"We'll treat it much like any other (regular-season) bye week," Head Coach John Fox said. "We'll work in areas, scenarios, situations maybe that we haven't worked on in a while or haven't arose during the season."

The players are off on Monday and Tuesday and will report back to the facilities on Wednesday morning. The team will hold practice on Wednesday through Friday, just like any other week.

“Players, I’d like them to rest their minds and rest their bodies,” Harbaugh said on New Year’s Eve.

The players will be off until the team meets up for Thursday and Friday workouts, and off again over the weekend.

Meanwhile, the coaching staff will be at the team’s Santa Clara headquarters throughout the week studying up on the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks and Washington Redskins, who could all visit Candlestick Park as the lowest remaining NFC seed in the Divisional Playoff round.

Here's one of those times the HC really earns his pay because it's critical for him to know 1.) How much work or rest the team needs 2.) How to make the best possible use of the time the players will be on the field or in meetings and 3.) How to combine the rest, the practices and the meetings to have his team at their emotional and physical peak when they take the field for their play-off game. Mike Smith has struggled to come up with the winning formula his previous three attempts, but give him credit for deciding to go in a completely different direction for this year's post-season.

The thing about Smitty is he isn't going to let the same things happen that stopped us the last two times. First was how we rested players last year in the last game. Then it was holding our plays because our whole playbook was on film last time. In 2010, we took it way easy during the bye week and lost our fire by getting complacent. Smitty's moves are all because of prior failures.

Wrong. The lowest remaining NFC seed in the Divisional Playoff round goes to Atlanta. Silly media.

They are right.

Packers win we play winner of skins seahawks, 9ers play packers

Vikings win we play vikings, 9ers play winner of skins seahawks.

Edit: last sentence just reads wrong, they have the teams right
