Its Time We Finally Get Abe Some Help

Fact is, Atlanta hasn't relied on pass rush this year from a front-4 like other defenses.

All this talk is pretty irrelevant seeing as there's nothing to be done but go and win games with what you have right now.

Off-season will be pretty much long periods of speculation just like this anyway.

Its for real though , we've put a lot on the preds shoulders. He needs help and we've failed to do so since signing him in the first place.

Yep, once Kerney left. Shame that LDE/RDE thing never really worked out.

The good thing is we have 2 guys ATM that have been playing behind Abe for a bit now in Matthews and Sidbury. If Abe can't go 100%, he could split some snaps with one of those guys. At least, per the depth charts. It seems the rookie Massaquoi is slotted behind Kroy.

As much as I hate to be a 'realist', at least come off that way, I have to be real about this: Abraham has not been relied upon as much as Kroy in some sense this year.

Abraham has been kept fresh for his best role on 3rd downs and he DOES still make a huge impact at defending period. However, it's not Pro Bowl caliber Abraham anymore. He's still a very good player, but his snaps 'have' been reduced this year. Atlanta has 'not' won with pass rush this year.

Besides? IF it's only a sprain/strain he should be back before we face a passing team.

The only potential downside is that he's best in space as far as our DL we are used to seeing. That means we'll miss him helping shut down any read-option QBs or even AP from the backside if we wind up facing Minny.

I miss Kerney. He was my fav. I still rock the St Pats day jersey. I cannot find them anymore. Kind of like the Spoon shadow jersey.

Kroy is the best run stopper on this team and one of the best in the league, believe it or not.

The problem is that now that we're using our magical 3 DT set, he isn't on the field as often in running situations.

Kroy Biermann has seen a mere 225 run defense snaps this season. Of those 225, he has 22 stops and only 3 missed tackles.

Biermann needs some work in the pass rush department but he is relentless and gets a lot of effort sacks.

He isn't Patrick Kerney, but he is our version of Chris Long, and we got him in, what, the 5th round?

What we need is a speed rusher to not HELP abe, but REPLACE abe, and come in on obvious passing downs to play opposite Abe until Abe himself retires. None of them are available in this year's free agent market unless one becomes a cap casualty, and that's pretty unlikely if you ask me. Our best bets would be Dwight Freeney or Israel Idonije and they're both already over 30.

Jarius Wynn should be a free agent, and he's shown a **** of a lot more in his limited playing time than any of our 3 backup guys. Dude has 2 sacks, 1 hit and 4 hurries in 48 pass rush snaps.

Kroy has been getting more pressure than Abe lately

the thing with kroy is he's never had a problem getting pressure, he just can't finish the play. If kroy could get past the lineman on a consistent basis, dude would easily average 10-15 sacks a year. To me he would be best rushing the passer as a 3-4 olb

DE will be by far our biggest need on D in the offseason, as it has been for a while

Landing a proven impact DE is the top priority

Osi Umenyiora and Dwight Freeney are 2 that immediately come to mind. Osi is the 3rd DE who says hes a starter not a bench player, wants out, he and Abe would be an outstanding edge rusher combo

Freeney is on a team thats going to the playoffs with a bright future so may want to stay but theyve switched to a 3-4 and hes not had a productive season as an OLB. He wants to return to the 4-3 and why not join a team a few years ahead of the Colts as a vet. He and Abe would be devastating

I would much prefer these proven vets over young guys like Cliff Avril and Michael Johnson, both of those play on good DLs just like Ray Edwards and you could end up with the same result. Umenyiora and Freeney are proven individuals who would actually be cheaper

I don't think so. We could either get stouter on the DT/34 DE rotation and also add a pass rushing LB. Nolan's defense is not necessarily dependent upon DE pass rush.
