NCFalcon52
....The Falcons need a running game? Didn't the packers win a Super Bowl with no running game less than 2 years ago? If passing is working then why do we need to run as good as others to win in the playoffs? If we're better at scoring points who cares if we run the ball! SwampyMux12
We need to be able to run it enough to keep teams honest. We don't have to blow their doors off, but we need to be able to stay balanced. Teams who have been able to sit in a cover 2 all game have given us fits. Remember, Starks got hot at the end of the year and they were able to run it at the end of the year and through the playoffs.

Espn jerks said that for atlanta to get a pkayoff win something will have to change...they were talking about tbe running game.
Ergo Proxy
We need to be able to run it enough to keep teams honest. Remember, Starks got hot at the end of the year and they were able to run it at the end of the year and through the playoffs.This.We ran plenty enough tonight. Problem was? We were more 'effective' vs. the Giants.Still, did no one see the play-action pass bomb to Roddy? Completely a part of the foundation of that play working for you: Lions bit on the run in 3rd and short. Cox/Turner backfield, play-action left...Ryan pumps safety left, bombs Roddy deep right. No safety. No one else in the area.I really liked the game plan tonight and last week. Tonight's had elements of getting our mobile OL out blocking on screens and some tosses early. This helped establish WR to QB, OL in a rhythm. It kept the Lions honest. Screens are effectively an impact in the running game and actually help the run game some itself.Atlanta was able to have solid pass-protection tonight overall as a result of play-calling directly.Did that ONE too many handoffs the first drive of the 3rd quarter hurt? Yeah. Still, that's one play that came back to bite. 2nd and 6 after a 1st down 4 yard run. Simply ATL should have play-actioned and kept it in 3rd and 6 at worst. Turner got stuffed by the Lions Suh, IIRC. Or at least one of their DL blew the play completely up. Against a team with potentially dominating DTs or outside playmakers, we should not run at them over and over unless we truly are abusing them. This put 3rd and long; wasting your good first down run of 4.However? The overall balance tonight WAS there. That one stalled drive to start the 3rd Quarter hurt and then being out of rhythm the drive after the D finally gave up a TD was even worse, actually. D has to defend. 3 and out to start the 3rd Quarter had nothing to do with their poor performance. Rather, it actually hurt themselves and the O being out of sync that following drive put our D back out there too quick. Still, their offense had to settle again. The safety made the score look closer. ATL left some points on the field not scoring when we had goal to go. Could have easily been 35-16. However, good overall game. B+ at least.I'll take a B+ playoff game grade. Probably means you won. birdz4i
too keep teams honest from teeing off and wearing out our o line. gotta let them fire off the ball occasionally and put the hit on the d line.

So I going to go on record and say once we win a playoff game this year they will drop the "Falcons can't run the ball" trust me folks, it's coming

Great example of what being able to run the ball with your backs collectively can do for you.
Ice5303
And the giants had the 32nd ranked run o last year, worked ok for them
Mid-Nite-Toker
I agree with Gruden's take on the run game last night...not devastating but teams still have to prepare for it.We need solid situation running...short yardage/goal line. Dharma Initiative
Giants and Patriots were #32 and #31 in rush offense last year. How'd that work out for them in the playoffs?

The Falcons don't need a great running game as long as they do just enough to keep Defenses honest.

No running game and you end up being Detroit.
