Somebody Explain To Me How Mike Smith Is "conservative"

Not when it happens all the time. Or either we just get outplayed all the time after we get a lead. But why woukd we get outplayed all the time after taking a lead? The first rule of Smittyball:

Take your foot off the gas when you get a lead.

Yeah That is why the falcons passed like 80% of the time vs the Saints once we got the lead right??

A single playoff win this year will be looked at as a successful year for this team and you have the nerve to try and downplay the success of the Patriots?

Will be looked at successful by who? Not me.

winning a playoff game is useless if you do not win the next one... and then the next one.

And **** right I do.

Their playoff record the last 8 years or so is not good at all yet some people keep them on a pedestal because of what they did nearly a decade ago.

The last time Tom Brady won a superbowl Matt Ryan was a freshman in college

That is what I call conservative. rolleyes.gif

Exactly

Smitty wanted to run up the score on the saints but the saints defense actually came to play for the first time all season.

throw in some drops and bad throws and you have that game.

That is why this entire notion that he is "conservative" is utterly stupid.

It is funny though ever since the Pats went to this wide open pass the ball 570+ times a year they have not won a superbowl

The years he did he had under 500 passing attempts 2 out of 3 years.

You bring up a good point. I think our fans terribly overrate our WRs. They are good, but they both struggle to beat man coverage lots of times.

That's the biggest thing I noticed yesterday. We had one of the worst secondaries in the league playing like it was Revis, Champ, Polamalu and Reed in the first half. I saw Julio getting manhandled by a dude 6 inches shorter than him.

If you watch the Pats, their WRs, RBs, and TEs explode off the line. Their OL attack. There is just so much more explosion off the snap. We play reactive football. I just don't see the fight in our players that I see on teams like the Pats.

It's not a talent thing, we are every bit as talented as they are, it's a coaching thing. We play scared football. Mike Smith wants to play keep away instead of capture the flag.

See the thing about the Super Bowl is that you have to be in it to win it. Patriots seem to be much better at getting that portion done than we are at the moment.

Yep. Superbowl or not, it isn't hard to see the Patriots have been dominant the past decade while we've been good but not dominant.

What good is being in it if you do not win it?

We were in a superbowl in 1998...........was it some badge of honor or something to LOSE it??

Not for me it was not I dunno about you.

Those are great stats. Did you watch the Saints game? Did you watch the Cards game? The Raiders game? The first half of the Panthers game? Did you watch any of those?

You know that I watch every single Falcons game played. You've been saying this samething about the WR since Jenkins. What makes you such an expert on what the WRs are doing and what they aren't? Could it be the Ryan's fault sometimes? What about the Oline....what about the playcalling. When was the last time we had two WR with 1000? We now have a chance for 3, one of which is a TE. How is that struggling to beat man coverage?

He's not conservative as a whole. He has had conservative moments at times but so have other coaches. The only thing I agree about him being conservative that was mentioned in this thread is the punt returner situation this year.

Is it a bad thing? Only in certain games it is. Securing that punt be key in some games and having a good return is also key in some games.

Other than that I haven't heard anything concerning his conservatism. I have heard a few gripes that are legitimate and some lacking, but again nobody is perfect.

Im pretty sure some of you at work do things that aren't perfect.

If you were watching the games close enough you wouldn't even be debating me on the point. The Falcons are much better against zone. Teams really mess them up when they play solid man on us.

I think they seriously mean personnel management, play calling, and still insisting on the ever so "magical" BBDB, which I have seen more of from Nolan recently than ever before.

HC's often will "suggest" to both coordinators what they would like to see in different circumstances. Whether its in their meetings, practices, or on the field.

While this is true , there is usually a game plan that is presented to the HC before a game. They must ultimately approve it , but once the game starts its pretty much all up to the OC or DC to make the play to play decisions. The HC does step in at needed times.

I also would just like to point out the Falcons are are the verge of doing something only a few other teams have done in the history of the NFL.

Have THREE... not one, not two but THREE 1,000 yard receivers.

Think about that for a second.

This would be the first time since 2008, and only the 4th time since 1995 it has happened if I am not mistaken.

How can a team who is on be on pace to pass the ball 629 times and throw for over 4800 yards with THREE wrs reaching the 1,000 mark be considered....conservative??

Only on this message board could people think of something so lame
