I think our DB coach deserves a ton of credit too. Owens and McClain both seemed to have very clean technique in that game. Owens stuck out the most because I've never seen him do that before. Someone has been beating the fundamentals into them.

The Falcons new Defensive Backs coach, Joe Danna, does deserve a lot of credit, along with DC Mike Nolan. Nolan brought Danna with him from the Dolphins. BVG and past DB coach Tim Lewis just didn't have what it takes to get the job done. A little info on Falcons new DB Coach Joe Danna:

Biography

Joe Danna joins the Falcons after serving two years as the Miami Dolphins Assistant Defensive Backs Coach. Danna brings 14 years of coaching experience with him, including four years of NFL experience. While with Miami, Danna assisted in producing one of the top secondary units in the NFL. Under his guidance, the Dolphins pass defense ranked eighth in the NFL in 2010.

Danna's Coaching Background

  • 2012 - Defensive Backs // Falcons
  • 2010-11 - Asst. Defensive Backs // Dolphins
  • 2008-09 - Defensive Assistant // Falcons
  • 2007 - Defensive Backs // James Madison
  • 2006 - Defensive Backs // Georgia Southern
  • 2005 - Wide Receivers // Central Michigan
  • 2003-04 - Safeties Coach // Central Michigan
  • 2002 - Wide Receivers // Central Michigan
  • 2001 - Graduate Assistant // Gerogia
  • 1999-00 - Graduate Assistant// Central Michigan

<-- not a huge fan of Cam, but he did put them in a spot to beat us this year.

got to give credit where credit is do.

Not disputing what you said, but that is a bad example. Dude put the ball on the carpet when he had a chance to put us away and that's the opposite of "clutch".

Nah dude is right. McClain moved into Asante's spot (LCB) in the base defense. Owens was the nickel back (5th back) in the nickel package even though he played on the outside at LCB.

I was speaking in terms of the Nickle being our Base, McClain may have taken over his spot on the depth chart but Owens took his spot on the outside while McClain stayed in the nickle.

From Yasinskas:

"After playing a Thursday night game, the Falcons altered their schedule. Coach Mike Smith gave the players the weekend and Monday off before returning to practice Tuesday. The team will be back on its regular schedule Wednesday and Smith said he expects defensive tackle Peria Jerry, who has been sidelined with a thigh injury, to return to practice. Smith wasn’t as definitive when it came to cornerback Asante Samuel (shoulder), but said he’s hopeful the veteran can practice at some point this week."

I hope the Falcons rest Asante at least another full week. Shoulder injuries are difficult to heal. Would also give Owens more playing time to see if he is really worth resigning next season or not.

The Defensive Secondary has played much better this season than I expected also since losing Grimes. However, the improved play by the DBs might bite the Falcons somewhat after this season. Next year, William Moore will be an Unrestricted Free Agent (UFA), and his value and future cost to sign has risen considerably. Chris Owens will also be an UFA next season, and his future value is starting to increase. Dunta Robinson is playing much better this season, but his scheduled cap-hit significantly escalates to $10.4 million next season. I don't see how Atlanta can afford that kind of cap-hit from Dunta next year, but his play is making another possible contract restructuring more improbable. Grimes was tagged, and will become an UFA next year. McClain was signed for one year only, and will become a FA next year, but thankfully he will be a Restricted Free Agent (RFA) rather than an UFA. Dom Franks is also a UFA next season, but I think Atlanta should just let him walk.

If grimes goes, that frees up a chunk of change for resigning, right?

Moore's future contract price probably just went up:

Atlanta Falcons: William Moore named NFC defensive player of the week

1:09 pm December 5, 2012, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons safety William Moore was named the NFC defensive player of the week after his 13-tackle and two-interception performance in Atlanta’s 23-13 win over the New Orleans Saints last Thursday.

Moore posted one of the best games of his career.

The Falcons defense intercepted Saints’ quarterback Drew Brees five times and held him without a touchdown pass for the first time in 54 games to snap his NFL record streak.

Moore’s second interception of the game came on the Saints final drive sealing the win for Atlanta and putting the Falcons in position to clinch their second NFC South title under Head Coach Mike Smith.

According to coaches’ breakdown, Moore has tallied a team-high 105 tackles (74 solo) with eight passes defensed, four tackles for loss, four interceptions and one sack.

His four interceptions are the second most he’s had in a season and rank tied for fourth among all safeties this season.

He is the first Falcon to win NFC defensive player of the week honors since cornerback Brent Grimes in Week 15 of the 2010 season.
