Falcons Explosive Plays

In an article written by Mark Bradley several months ago Dirk Koetter explained that he considers 12 yard runs and 16 yard passes as "explosive plays". Koetter also said if you have 8 "explosive plays" your chances of winning go up greatly. Knowing that let's see how many explosive plays we had by Koetter's standards.

1-10-ATL 31 - (13:01) 2-M.Ryan pass short middle to 11-J.Jones to KC 44 for 25 yards (56-D.Johnson).

2-7-ATL 30 - (10:56) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 2-M.Ryan pass short right to 84-R.White to ATL 46 for 16 yards (27-A.Elam).

2-10-ATL 20 - (3:02) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 2-M.Ryan pass short left to 83-H.Douglas to ATL 39 for 19 yards (34-T.Daniels).

2-1-KC 28 - (1:48) (No Huddle) 2-M.Ryan pass short right to 88-T.Gonzalez to KC 3 for 25 yards (35-J.Reeves).

3-11-ATL 29 - (8:26) (Shotgun) 2-M.Ryan pass deep left to 11-J.Jones to KC 40 for 31 yards (34-T.Daniels).

2-8-KC 38 - (6:59) 2-M.Ryan pass short left to 11-J.Jones to KC 19 for 19 yards (27-A.Elam)

1-10-KC 43 - (1:20) 2-M.Ryan pass deep left to 84-R.White to KC 17 for 26 yards (27-A.Elam).

So the Falcons racked up 7 explosive plays (all passes) when going by Koetter's standards. I myself have always considered any passing play that goes over 15 yards as an "explosive play". I consider any running play that goes over 10 yards as an "explosive play". That's just because I like round numbers. So if we expand to included plays of 15 yards or more and rushing plays of 10 yards or more we can add the following plays to that list:

2-10-KC 31 - (10:53) 2-M.Ryan pass short left to 84-R.White to KC 16 for 15 yards (96-A.Studebaker)

1-10-ATL 46 - (10:26) (No Huddle) 2-M.Ryan pass short right to 84-R.White ran ob at KC 39 for 15 yards. Kansas City challenged the pass completion ruling, and the play was Upheld. (Timeout #1.)

1-10-KC 48 - (2:05) (No Huddle) 2-M.Ryan up the middle to KC 37 for 11 yards (56-D.Johnson)

1-10-KC 19 - (6:21) 33-M.Turner up the middle to KC 8 for 11 yards (27-A.Elam; 96-A.Studebaker)

That's 11 "explosive plays" for the Falcons today. I've got to say that if the Falcons routinely rack up 11 "explosive plays" a game offensively they'll win a lot of games this season and ultimately get that playoff monkey off our back.

The passing game was infinitely better today than anything I ever saw under Mularkey. No dinking and dunking for 5 or 6 yards at a time, and only one deep pass. Just a bunch of intermediate passes to the middle of the field that allowed the receivers to pick up some YAC.

To me, that is an "explosive" offense.

I agree. Not every pass has to be a 40 or 50 yard bomb. We only took 1 deep shot down the field. But we threw plenty of 15-25 yard passes. That's plenty "explosive" to me.

I'm sticking with Smitty's definition of explosive plays which he stated were 20+ yard runs and receptions. Not Kutty's JAX standards. By Smitty's standards we had four explosives which is good.

call it what you want, it was good to see us move the ball up the field, there were very few lost yardage plays & i never felt like we where in an 3rd down situation that we couldn't convert. I didn't like the time we were on like the 2 yrd line & Matt got sacked, should have ran the ball right there. I know the run game didn't look good today, but you have to be able to pound a team for 2 or 3 yards when you get in that position. The threat of run has to be there to keep those lanes open & those linebackers stepping up on play-action

I agree. That was the very next play after that 25 yard pass to Gonzalez (that's listed above). I thought we should have tried to punch it in with Turner there since we had 1st down at the 3. The sack put us in a bad situation and we had to settle for a field goal.

Well we didn't see too many explosive plays against the Broncos and Chargers but they were back in full force against the Panthers. The Falcons had 9 explosive plays that counted. 10 if you count the deep bomb to Julio that was just out of bounces. That's a pretty good day. Also good to see all the explosive plays in the running game.

1-10-ATL 23 - (1:56) 33-M.Turner left end to ATL 40 for 17 yards (41-C.Munnerlyn).

1-10-ATL 40 - (1:07) 33-M.Turner right guard to CAR 49 for 11 yards (30-C.Godfrey).

1-10-CAR 49 - (:33) 2-M.Ryan pass deep right to 84-R.White for 49 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

1-10-ATL 40 - (10:29) 2-M.Ryan pass short middle to 33-M.Turner for 60 yards, TOUCHDOWN.

2-10-ATL 18 - (14:07) 33-M.Turner right tackle to ATL 32 for 14 yards (52-J.Beason).

1-10-ATL 32 - (13:26) 33-M.Turner left end pushed ob at CAR 41 for 27 yards (41-C.Munnerlyn).

3-10-ATL 20 - (7:45) 2-M.Ryan pass deep middle to 11-J.Jones to 50 for 30 yards (30-C.Godfrey).

1-10-MID - (6:59) (No Huddle, Shotgun) 2-M.Ryan pass short left to 32-Jz. Rodgers pushed ob at CAR 35 for 15 yards (58-T.Davis).

1-10-ATL 1 - (:59) 2-M.Ryan pass deep left to 84-R.White to CAR 40 for 59 yards (24-J.Norman).
