Falcons QB Matt Ryan hopes he's built for postseason run

By Jim Corbett, USA TODAY

Newly chiseled Matt Ryan embodies his team's 2012 mantra to finish stronger and step up in postseason weight class after adding 7 pounds of body armor to his 6-4, 220 frame

The question is, will the Atlanta Falcons quarterback's physical transformation produce a January-February breakthrough for a player driven to cast aside a haunting 0-3 playoff record?

Hope grows that Ryan's added muscle, gleaned through intense weight training, along with a revamped offensive line will translate into a run at the Lombardi Trophy.

"My frame could have used the extra 7 pounds for a couple of years," Ryan says with a laugh. "I've gotten stronger and hopefully more durable."

Ryan owns a sterling 43-19 record in regular-season games. But the playoff losses in which he threw a total of three touchdown passes and four interceptions while averaging less than 200 yards drew speculation he was running on empty.

"The main focus was trying to be in the best possible shape to really play at a high level in November, December and January," Ryan said.

"It's a league where one team and one quarterback are happy at season's end. We haven't been that one team yet. But we're primed and ready to be a great football team."

The man nicknamed "Matty Ice" more resembled "Matty Icebag" as he was hit a combined 110 times last season in suffering 26 sacks and 84 quarterback hits behind a leaky line.

"Matt's approach to this offseason has been admirable," general manager Thomas Dimitroff said. "He has really set out to strengthen himself physically and understands the importance of being strong and having endurance down the stretch.

"He's put more time in here this offseason than anyone.

"There's no doubt in my mind that Matt is an upper-echelon quarterback."

When Ryan was drafted third overall in 2008 out of Boston College, comparisons were made to a young Tom Brady.

But Ryan's postseason struggles are more reminiscent of a young Peyton Manning, who ended his 0-for-3 postseason skid when he led the Indianapolis Colts to a 2003 season wild-card win vs. the Denver Broncos.

"I don't know if they've taken a before and after picture, but you can definitely see the noticeable difference with Matt," coach Mike Smith said. "If you're stronger at the beginning of the season, you're going to be stronger at the end.

"It's very important for us, because we feel like we've got to be more consistent and play better at the end of the season."

It starts up front. To help Ryan orchestrate a deeper passing game, free agent guard Vince Manuwai, second-round center-guard Peter Konz and third-round tackle Lamar Holmes were added.

"We have to take the things we've learned from our critical analysis of the last three times that we've been in the postseason," Smith said, referencing the most recent disappointment — a 24-2 drubbing administered by the eventual Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

Let me say something to any Ryan doubters. Take it from a senior fan who has been around for some time. There is such a thing as Karma. I preached it all my life and believe in it. Now it's time to listen to me again. Things come in threes. It also has proven true all my life. Ryan is 0 and 3 for post season games. It's over. He had his 3 bad games. Nothing but wins in post season starting next season. Take it to the bank fans!

I still don't understand why everyone puts the loss to the Giants on Ryan. The offensive line got their collective ***** handed to them that game, it's hard to complete a pass while your laying prone.

It's what the trolls here do, they bash Ryan and TD non stop 24/7 365, it is their purpose and because the mods are lazy they get free reign to do it. On any other NFL board they all would have be banned in about 12 hrs of their trolling.

I can agree if people (Ryanettes) felt the same about MT/MM when it came to the O-line last season.

The 1st half of GB p/o loss tells the truth really. MT 9 for 37 TD (1 neg. carry -2) / MR 2 int / pk 6...MR took us out of the game.

The talk of MT losing it (because he's 30) is more annoying than any MR criticism atm.

Matt deserved his share of the blame against Green Bay, but a 28-14 deficit at halftime is far, far from insurmountable (the very next week Chicago was down 14 against Green Bay in the 4th quarter with their third string QB and nearly pulled off the upset...and would have were it not for a DT interception for a TD). And check Rodgers passing stats in that particular game...with two ints his stats were about as bad as Ryan's the week before. The difference? Defense...Green Bay had one, we didn't.

And some here remember us leading Dallas by 14 in the 4th quarter of an infamous playof game!

More so, it was not Matt Ryan who allowed 5 consecutive 80 yard TD drives to put the game completely out of hand. I struggle to recall a defense that gave up at halftime as quickly as ours did that awful night.

If you understand what I typed and bolded in my early response, answer this:

Are you as upset over MT weight issues as MR's admitted lack of physical conditioning?

I'm not clear where you're coming from, but yes, I am extremely upset with Michael Turner's gross lack of commitment to his conditioning since his first season. I am not concerned so much with his age as he was a back-up his first few seasons.

the last two seasons he's hasn't close to the initial burst our of his stance or speed turning the corner and this is due one single issue...extra weight and poorer conditioning.

Admittedly, I'm a conditioning freak and I have very little tolerance for laziness, especially from a professional athlete paid handsomely to simply keep his weight at its proper level.

I am so ready for the season to start. Matt Ryan and his newly chiseled frame, Turner says he is in great shape, Julio is just a beast and will only get better, and Roddy is just Roddy. The addition of Samuel, and a Nolan ran defense. Can't wait for the regular season.

I forgot even Ray Edwards says he is healthy and ready to go. Now this one I will believe when I see it, but it sounds good.

You didn't have those same concerns for Ryan...considering he admitted he lacked conditioning?

Again, do you allow MT/MM the same excuses you would give for MR concerning the O-line?

I'm really hoping for all of our sake Matt Ryan goes out there and leads us to playoff success . Least go out there and play a great game in playoffs . None of this less then 200 yard games in playoffs . We need Ryan to be able to make plays in playoffs unless Nolan transformed this defense into a elite and we can game manage with Ryan .

It's time for Ryan to step up in playoffs . It's year 5 . Another season and no playoff success

could possibly lead to some good people losing their jobs. It's time for the whole team as well to step up . Just not the QB but he is the main 1 that needs to put this team on his back if the case made be . If defense breaks down go out there and win a shoot out

Should be No More excuses . It's time we stop babying Ryan

Good post.

Matt Ryan - QB - Falcons

Coach Mike Smith says that Matt Ryan's arm strength has improved significantly.

It's an important trait as the Falcons' implement a philosophy change. Per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, "some of the major differences in the passing attack will be more vertical routes with an emphasis on getting the ball to receivers on the move." New coordinator Dirk Koetter is also expected to run more screens and no-huddle offense this season. Ryan's arrow is pointing up as he enters his fifth NFL season.

Matt threw 2 ints before the half and one returned to the house . Do you know the percentages when a team scores a defensive TD . They are in the 70% . Also GB got the ball at half as well

Thank GOD for a Weems return for a TD who knows what score would have been

In all 3 playoff games Matt Ryan as been awful

We gave him a mulligan on his first playoff game where he had 2 ints

one of the very first series that lead to Arizona points . Also a fumble on a exchange between Turner that lead to a TD

In NY Giants game . Ryan played like a coward . Not wanting to challenge secondary . Looking to dump down instead of making a play . When has Matt Ryan made a play like Tim Tebow has in his playoff game . Tim Tebow a QB with flawed mechanics and terrible accuracy throws for 300 yards against Pitt and made some big time throws and even a game winning throw

Where is Ryan making plays in playoffs ? Where is Ryan doing everything he can to keep us in the game ?

The answer is you won't find it . You know why chief . Cause he is a game manager that needs a rushing game

As stupid as you've proven yourself, you are gonna be looking even worse come next off season. I love it. The more you pile on, the further you will cowardly retreat in short time.

Right . So me asking why TD and Blank have not gave Ryan a contract ext is stupid ? There was talking in March that the Falcons are working on Ryan ext it's almost July and no ext

If Front office is convinced he is a top tier QB or will be why haven't they extending his contract which is up after 2013 season ?

Gee you must be on to something everybody else is missing.ohmy.png (it's probably just that your on something everybody else isn't) Man if you where half as smart as you pretend to be you would at least show signs by now. Frankly all you've amounted to so far in my eyes is a joke nobody can take seriously. Don't even try me. To me your like an obnoxious fly who occasionally flies by my ear close enough to disturb me til i swat your puny a$$. It almost seems like the only enjoyment you get out of life is coming to TATF to get a rise out of members. For this i honestly pity your existence. Have a good one slick-twat.

In 2010 Tom Brady was entering his last year of his deal before his contract..... The same for Rivers (in 09) ..... Flacco is entering his last year or his deal with no deal.... Brees last year of his deal has past and dude was Franchised...

I really want to discuss stuff but it sound like you are reaching for something... Matt has 2 years left dude.

I like Matt Ryan but the best thing is probably to let this year play out for you can judge his true value... If he ball out we probably will have to pay him more next year but you will know his true value.

Exactly, why would you rush into an extension with him now?
