Falcons Offseason Successful So Far Imo...

I draw some parallels between the Falcons of this season to the 49ers of last season. The 49ers made no significant FA signings except for Carlos Rogers a guy who was considered a mid tier cb that couldn't cut it in Washington. In fact Rogers was a late signing cause nobody wanted him. All he did was play at a pro bowl level last season. They were rumored to be interested in Nnamdi ( the big splash FA) but didn't want to over pay. They got bashed up and down by the meda, oh this team and FO sucks they're gonna finish last in the division, blah, blah, blah. All the 49ers did was change the coaching staff and put some fresh life into that team. End result was a 13-3 record and NFC championship appearance.

The Falcons are in a similar situation so far. They haven't made the "big flash FA" signing, instead they are staying quiet. I like that! The Falcons were rumored intersted in Mario Williams, but it was clear that this guy and his agent wanted to break the bank...and they did. That's Buffalo's problem now. The Falcons signed a couple of mid-tier guys, people that you really need for depth. Some of you people don't like that, but these "mid-tier" guys form the foundation of your team. Then the most important thing is they let BVG and MM walk! That's the best thing that happened all offseason...10 times bigger than signing a Mario Williams. Now you got fresh life on both sides of the ball, plus you got one of the best DC's in the game. It's the classic addition by subtraction. Alot of those young players that didn't get enough opportunity will get it now and improve.

Now alot of folks are complaining about not signing Lofton (yet?). Well when one of the best DC's in the game are telling you that he is a two down player, then why are you trying to pay him top dollar? Because you really, really, really like him and he's your favorite Falcon and you have the #50 jersey...what? I like Lofton too, plus you can't under estimate his locker room prescence. Do you really think he'll get top dollar from another team?Same thing with Abe, who the he11 going to pay top dollar for a DE on his last legs? Falcons will let them test the market and perhaps like Snelling they'll realize they are better off here than another spot.

They re-signed HD which is HUGE. They re-signed Decoud and Beirman, not my favorite players but these contracts are structured in a way that if these guys suck they can get rid of em and not take too much of a cap hit. Now they got some work to do on the OL and DL, i'm not denying that, but you can't go all Washington Redskin in trying to fix this thing. Redskins have been like a gambler at a casino chasing losses since the mid 90's.

But thats what we have plenty of middle tier guys and you are right they do form the foundation and thats all well and good but this team needs a couple of difference makers on defense and for me I just don't see them especially upfront the buzz word out of the branch this off season has been STOUTER I have yet to see anything that suggests the above unless they go o and d line crazy in the draft.

I think the last 4 years have been just a "righting of the ship" thing. Now that we've made some personnel changes with MM and BVG out and MN and DK in, we are looking to build off that by building through the draft with key players that will (HOPEFULLY} turn into major contributors in the future.

All the great teams build through the draft and considering TD's pedigree...I think he knows that too.

My point was they needed better coaching. Sure there are holes to fill on the OL and DL. But remember this team has gone 11-5, 9-7, 13-3, 10-6 with basically the same crop of talent. The coaching can make them stouter and with more grit like it did with San Fran.

I would rather have 10 guys get four sacks then only four guys get 10 sacks each because it’s a lot more difficult for an offense to look at your entire defense and say ‘We’ve got to block them all guys. That guy might come, that guy might come.’ That’s a real stress for a quarterback. -- Mike Nolan

Let that one sink in real good...

I'm still excited.

We have no drama at any of the skill positions, I mean when DJax VJax and co are your investment strategy you are in big trouble

Scheme and execution will win every time over flashy aquisitions. Thanks for a sane post TNB.

@Cappy, that's my favorite quote of the offseason.

I remember a Patriots team winning the Super Bowl with a team full of mid-tier guys and game-manager QB (who later developed into a HOFer), let's not forget that our losses last year came from a lack of execution, not from a lack of talent.

Well then Nolan came to exactly the right place. Because TD has proven to be excellent at finding very average pass rushers who are absolutely no threat to opposing QBs.

Last years team minus Abe, Lofton and McClure......successful off-season? Hahaha

Why dont you guys all hold hands and sing Kumbaya.

geez, this place is growing more delusional by the hour.

*takes off rose-colored glasses and smashes them underfoot*

As much as I like Lofton, he isn't a key component to the defense. As for Abraham and McClure, they're both closing in on the end of their careers. Abraham made a minimal impact (5.5 of his sacks coming in just two games against terrible O-lines and was invisible for most of the year) and McClure's heir was already lined up.

The sky isn't falling, chicken little.

And you think the season is already sunk 3 days into FA in MARCH. Do you think you're any less delusional?

And who is going to replace these "aging" stars? No moves yet. A bit premature to call the off-season successful. lol

And LMFAO at 'McClures heir already lined up'. Hawley is absolute garbage!

We've got some major work to do to rise above the past two embarrasing post-season showings and Smitty is off fly-fishing in Colorado or something.

But please dont mind me, carry on....

Hawley gave up 1 sack and 1 pressure when he was starting at center and plugged the floodgate that was RG. Sidbury had as many sacks as Abraham for weeks despite severely limited snaps. So, please, continue whining about how we're not taking the Madden approach to free agency.

Where did i say that?

I'll wait....

So if we perform even better than last season, what will you say? Don't put on a muse and act as if you were faithful the whole time. I'm just saying. Seen it happen many times before. And who says Abe won't be back. Nobody is going to pay him 12 mil. And McClure is going to be resigned, as will Abe. Really, Abe and Lofton weren't impact players anyway, under BVG. Not like Lofton was a rare talent, lol.

So...you're already jumping ahead to next season like the other guy? smh

I guess you think i'm not a real fan too since i'm not happy about the lack of aggressiveness this off-season? rolleyes.gif

Ive been a fan for about forty years, so your opinion means didly-squat to me.
