vel
Since we went ahead and signed Lofa before FA even started, doesn't that mean the writing on the wall for Lofton? We essentially signed Lofton's replacement, saving a significant amount of cap.Couldn't one assume that since we did this so "early" that we have a deal set up for Williams already to go through when things get going? Why would you sign Lofa only to miss out on Williams and you could have kept Lofton?Fasten your seat belts gentlemen! It's about to get WILD!!!!! capologist
I think it more says, "We have this value on Lofton and his agent has value X on Lofton" so it's Saturday we'll go ahead and sign a MLB because obviously someone else is willing to pay the asking price and we aren't.But yes, I fully expect us to go after Mario.I think Lofton's latest Tweet speaks volumes. He quoted Biggie Smalls Mo Money, Mo Problems: "I don't know what they want from me, it seems like the mo money we talk about, the mo problems we see!" Lofton is a good LB and you don't move on from a player like him without a plan. Williams has to be that plan. If we don't even go at Williams, then I don't understand the Lofa signing anymore. If they are going to overpay, I'd rather it be a year or two for Abe. I think he'd have more impact over Sid/Biermann/Edwards, than Lofton would have over Tatupu and Dent. Bohern
That's the bottom line right there. This may or may not have anything to do with MW, but that is the bottom line.I love Lofton as a player and he has been good for us, but he is a 2 down back and lacks coverage capabilities. That along with the money he may want is the reason we are not signing him.You add in that he is a GREAT run stopper and teams are passing more and running less also does not fit what we need sadly

The Falcons hope to build an offense that takes the opponent out of their running attack early in the game.

If there were a stat for almost getting to the QB, the Falcons would be ranked 1st and it's sad. Smitty may have said sacks or overrated, but those and QB hits are what really rattles QBs. Especially if you get pancaked.

The money it could have taken to resign both Abraham and Lofton seems like it will be spent elsewhere. Just saying...
Guest TheIdowu
MW aint coming here. . . .and I hope he doesn't. If he comes here and underperforms or doesn't perform to the value of his contract based upon fans' perception, then you all will be the first to blame TD. Snafu
If I was being forced to guess w/ my life on the line, I'd say Mario will be a Falcon. I don't think its coincidence that we have only been signing cap friendly FA's so far.

I don't think its coincidence that we have only been signing cap friendly FA's so far.i think nolan was done with lofton regardless. lofa is a more versatile player and its as much a scheme move as it is a cap move. what i like is thatt here are free agents at big positions of need for us. if we can just sign a solid de or ol, the rest can be addressed in rds 2 and 3 of the draft. as long as we can address one position via FA we should be in a good place. g-dawg
MW aint coming here. . . .puh-leze......you have ZERO proof of that statement. Falcons are playoff contenders - located in south where Mario is from, Falcons #1 need is defensive end and Falcons have cap space. Will we get him? don't know yet but Falcons almost certainly are going for Mario and will have a good shot at getting him - you are just popping off. That's the bottom line right there. This may or may not have anything to do with MW, but that is the bottom line.I think its a combination of both. If Falcons had virtually no holes on defense, maybe they would have overpaid for Lofton. Given the terrible performance and holes on the Defensive Lines, I believe Falcons realized after season was over and they hired Nolan that they were parting ways with Lofton. Good luck to "5-0". g-dawg
54 hours to go until free agency starts at 4pm on Tuesday(March 13th). Of course, no players/teams/agents are supposed to know where the interest lies between player and team - but we all know that is not the real world.Right now, the Falcons know if Mario is interested in them, and Mario's agent knows that the Falcons are interested and will be a strong player for his services - of course agent/player want as many bidders as possible. If Falcons did not feel good about their chances to land Mario - they would have most likely approached this offseason differently. Regardless, Lofton was not going to be a Falcon - whether Falcons get Mario or not - the O-Line and D-Line needs to be remade.
pzummo
I think we have a plan in place to target several free agents. I don't think we put all of our eggs in Mario's basket. I also don't think we have a deal in place, because that would be against the rules and this FO seems to play by the rules. We have not been the first one's to sign someone out of the gate within hours of FA starting. In other words, we are setting ourselves up to be players in FA. Mario Williams is probably plan A. If we cannot come to an agreement with Mario, I'm sure we have a plan B that targets a number of other FA's if we cannot get Mario. Pure speculation and just a scenario, but if we can't get Mario for what we want to give him, we might be targeting Demetrius Bell, Paul Solai, and Jeremy Mincey as a plan B. With plans C, D, and E depending on who is still available.
