tobyd77
Maybe Abe gets no deal and will take a lower salary if we don't go after Williams. I'm getting nervous though and don't know if Nolan may be thinking he can run with Kroy, Cliff ,and Sidberry.Would us fans be comfortable with that considering Nolan's track record of defensive success? We would be lucky to even touch the QB then.
Falkonator
Jeremy Mincey would be a nice fall back option

RHEC
per rotoworldAppearing on Total Access Thursday, NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora predicted the Falcons will make a "strong play" for free agent DE Mario Williams."I'd look for them to be aggressive," LaCanfora added, citing the team's heavy pursuit of pass rusher Charles Johnson last summer. With John Abraham hitting the open market, the Falcons have a desperate need for an impact pass rusher. While teams can always clear cap space, Atlanta may not be able to free up enough to winning a bidding war for the top free agent. Mar 8 - 7:24 PMJust wait and see, Sid will get to the qb a lot.Maybe, I have hope for him.
Peyton
At some point you have to draft somebody who can play.If we go into Dimitroff's 5th season as GM and the Falcons have two overpaid FA DEs starting, then that is a black spot on his record.I hope they let Kroy, Sidbury, and Matthews fight for the snaps, I think there is a player or two between the three of them. U gotta build through the draft... Not go after every big name every year... I wouldnt mind mario, but for the better of the team, spend that money on getting a top notch o-line... Thats the group thats goin to take u to the promise land... But the way its looking defense will be FA, offense will be draft...
vel
This isn't the draft to try and land a starting DE at #55. Curry, Branch, and Jones are the most likely options at #55 and I'd rather take my chances on Sidbury/Biermann than those guys and get a better player at #55.With Williams, you have your bookends in Williams and Edwards and your depth in Sidbury, Biermann, and Matthews for at least 5 years. And Edwards isn't overpaid. $2.7MM cap hit last year. $5.2MM this year (his supposed make up year). If he gets 6-8 sacks this year, he makes his money. With Williams on the other side, there is a good chance he does. Edited March 9, 2012 by vel
coastiemike
If you sign Williams, you replace our not having a first round pick.
Peyton
If you sign Williams, you replace our not having a first round pick.Well yeah....except for the paying him 11-15 mil a year instead of 3 mil a year that would go to a rookie.
coastiemike
And what rookie are you going to bring in that has the same talent?

Some people expect to catch lightning in a bottle but me, I'd rather have a more rock solid option than that.

Probably several hundred thousand, and we'd have to wait 3 years for him to develop.
cnasty
Funny thing, I've got it on good word (kinda "know" somebody) that Abe is going to meet with the Texans either this week or next. That'd be kinda funny if we swapped players like that.
youngbloodz
Not having a first round pick kills us. Just not any DE's out there at 55. Now we could possibly get a great guard. Draft is a crap shoot anyway. It's all a guessing game
Butudontseeme™
exactly... U gotta build through the draft... Not go after every big name every year... But the way its looking defense will be FA, offense will be draft...I agree that we need upgrades along the o line, but look at 3 of the last 4 conference winners (the last 2 years green bay, ny, and Pitt) and you will see than none of those teams had a great o line but they ALL get (or got) after the QB. We need pass rush desperately an it either needs I come from a dynamic player like MW or from a good pass rushing scheme (which I think we have). I say Mario or bust on the DEs because there's not another guy out there that will improve this team drastically enough this year. If no Mario, then go for the o line overhaul. There are a few good prospects at DT this year but DE is a risky pick Day one in the draft this year.
