theProf
Breaking down DeCoud's contractMar 8 2:41PMBy Pat YasinskasLet’s take a look at the details of the contract signed by Atlanta safety Thomas DeCoud earlier this week. It’s a five-year deal that averages $3.5 million per season. But that number could grow.DeCoud received a $3 million signing bonus and will earn a base salary of $1.4 million this year with $1 million of that guaranteed. In 2013, his salary will rise to $1.9 million.DeCoud has a chance to earn some serious money after that if he has established himself as a solid player. In 2014, his salary jumps to $4.2 million and $2.25 million of that becomes guaranteed if he’s on the roster on the fifth day of the league year.In 2015, DeCoud’s base salary is scheduled to be $4 million, but it can grow by as much as $1.6 million if he meets playing-time requirements, has an unspecified number of interceptions and makes the Pro Bowl. In 2016, DeCoud is scheduled to make $4.2 million, but can increase that by up to another $1.9 million if certain incentives are met. WineBird
I like the deal. It locks up a guy who's been solid for us without breaking the bank.We have enough areas to address this offseason without adding Safety to them.
Dem Birds
Yeah, good contract design. DeCoud won't make a pro bowl, more than likely, regardless of what he does on the field just because he plays in Atlanta, but I think Nolan can turn him into a player. theProf
DeCoud's prorated signing bonus will be $600,000 per year ($3 Million / 5 years). Therefore, his cap hit for 2012 will be $2 million ($1.4m base salary + $600,000 prorated signing bonus). Decoud's cap hit for 2013 will be $2.5 million ($1.9m base salary + $600,000 prorated signing bonus).
krammmit
Very good signing. Hes not the best safety but hes been ok for us. Lead the team in interceptions. I hope he will be more successful with the incentives in his contract. Who knows, it may just be what he needs to get to the next level. Peyton
I don't think he'll see the third year of that deal.

falconidae
I don't think he'll see the third year of that deal.If not, they'll have bought themselves some time to find his replacement. If he plays out his contract, Falcons will have gotten a bargain.Win Win for the Falcons.
Peyton
Looks like a very good deal for both parties. It's a very good deal for Thomas DeCoud. The good side for the Falcons is they can dump him after two years if he still sucks and it will have a positive influence on the cap instead of negative. theProf
I don't think he'll see the third year of that deal.If DeCoud played like he did last year, he might not see that third year. However, if he played like he did in 2009, when Smitty thought DeCoud was the Defensive MVP, then the Falcons got a bargain. I believe Nolan thinks he can do something good with DeCoud, or the Falcons probably would have not re-signed him.
Guest Gritz
In all honesty the deal the Falcons gave DeCoud was based on the facts that it's a very weak draft class for safeties.....and not much better for free agent safeties. He has all of the physical skills to be a top- notch FS in the NFL. It's his mental lapses that have made most of us sour on him.Maybe Nolan's schemes can reenergize DeCoud and disguise his weaker points. muskokas finest ©
$17.5 million for a middling Safety is pretty generous.
falconsd56
2 million bucks is cheap for a quality stating safety. He is not top tier or anything but for all the bone head plays he usually makes several nice plays that somewhat make up for it. markdzul
I think you guys are going to be really surprised with how well our defense performs over the next couple of years... Mike Nolan will completly revamp our system and turn some of these guys like Decoud and Bierman into team MVP candidates I feel...
atljbo
$17.5 million for a middling Safety is pretty generous.Dont look at the big number.... Those numbers are just numbers unless Decoud become a probowl FS ... Then we got a great deal... If that doesnt happen.... Its basically a 2year deal to see what he can do in Mike Nolan's system
vel
Get Decoud in a structured environment and he will be a better player.

Peyton , his biggest problems IMO are getting confused in coverage..........that may be partly because of BVGs scheme which didn't make a lot of sense at times anyway ...and again thats my opinionsam

If he plays average....then we paid about average. I see win win all over this signing.
Pacific_Falcon
I think DeCoud will benefit as much as anybody from the coaching changes. It had to hard being the last line of defense in a predictable system with a poor pass rush. This isnt particular to decoud but with better coordinators we will finally get a clear look at some guys. without mularkey and bvg's ineptitude its now up to player execution. if some of these unknowns are erratic or unreliable there are no excuses anymore. if some of the players cant get it together with the coaching upgrades we have they gotta go...the scheme alibi is officially at the bottom of the dead sea now. pren226
Peyton , his biggest problems IMO are getting confused in coverage..........that may be partly because of BVGs scheme which didn't make a lot of sense at times anyway ...and again thats my opinionsami would agree 100% that most of his problems seemed to come from being confused in coverage. what somewhat scares me is that bvg's vanilla defense wasn't that confusing especially him sitting back in a 2 deep shell 90% of the time. i believe a good coach can coach up a player and that nolan will put decoud in position to make plays, but he isn't the long term answer for our team. this deal favors us being that there isn't a clear cut better option via free agency or the draft.if he plays lights out and meets his incentive bonus it's a win for us for getting his max potential out of him, if he doesn't we got him for a decent price and will be looking to replace him in the future. Peyton
Agreed....If he makes 17.5 it means that he met the incentives and in that case we stole him. If he plays average....then we paid about average. I see win win all over this signing. If he makes 17.5 mil, it means he stayed on he roster for 5 years. He'll make over 20 million if he meets the incentives, whatever they are.
