Dirk Koetter

Recommended Posts

I posted this in another thread and it kinda got ignored so I'll post it in a new thread and see if people pay attention to it. Why do people refuse to look at Koetter's situation. Look at Jacksonville. Rookie QB who had no business playing with no receivers to throw to. WTF was Koetter supposed to do? In 2010 Jacksonville gained more yards than Atlanta. Yes. Koetter's offense gained more yards than Mularkey's in 2010. And in 2007 in Koetter's first year with Jacksonville when he had his most offensive talent to work with the Jaguars set franchise records in points scored and offensive yards gained and won a playoff game in Pittsburgh. I can't wait to see what Koetter could do with some real offensive talent. Here are some stats breakdown. I think there are 4 major offensive stats that matter. Points, points per game, yards per game and 1st downs per game. So those are the 4 stats I'm using here.

2007

POINTS - 411

PPG - 25.7

YPG - 357.4

1stDPG - 20.5

2008

POINTS - 302

PPG - 18.9

YPG - 319.1

1stDPG - 19.5

2009

POINTS - 290

PPG - 18.1

YPG - 336.6

1stDPG - 18.8

2010

POINTS - 353

PPG - 22.1

YPG - 341.2

1stDPG - 20.6

2011

POINTS - 243

PPG - 15.2

YPG - 259.3

1stDPG - 15.7

Now compare his best year offensive to Mularkey's 4 years as Falcons OC.

2008

POINTS - 391

PPG - 24.4

YPG - 361.2

1stDPG - 19.6

2009

2011

PPG - 25.1

YPG - 376.6

1stDPG - 21.8

I just don't understand why people are so down on Koetter. When you compare the offensive pieces he had to work with and what Mularkey had to work with it's amazing Jacksonville's offense was as good as it was at times. I'm really excited to see what he could do with some offensive weapons. After working with David Garrard and Blaine Gabbert he's got to feel like he's getting the 2nd coming of Johnny Unitas in Matt Ryan. Ryan is so far above Garrard and Gabbert's level it's silly. Unlike Mularkey who seemed uncomfortable with the idea of letting Matt Ryan go out and win games, instead of playing not to lose, Koetter might actually fully let Matt just play and not worry about him making a mistake every now and then that might lose a game. It's a heck of a lot better than having a QB play tentative because he's been coached down so much as to not make a mistake that might lose a game. That's why Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Eli Manning are Super Bowl winning QBs. They aren't afraid of making a mistake that might lose a game and as a result the actually make plays to win games instead. Matt Ryan has the talent to do that. He's got the mental compacity to do that. He's just got to put the 2 together and put the fear of making a mistake out of his mind.

Actually I'm pretty optimistic about Koetter. I really can't be down on him about what happened with Jacksonville. I mean seriously the ONLY guy he has was MJD. After him it was bottom feeders. I think he will bring a nice varied offense to this team and I'm will to keep my eyes open and see what happens.

People are down in him b/c he's someone who has to be defended. He's someone that people take large amounts of time to come up with reasons why he will succeed. Most people on this board want someone who's record speaks for itself. I hope Koetter is good. He has the right philosophy and the right mindset, now he just needs the success over a long period.

From reading some on him it seems his idea offense would be to run something similar to what Dan Reeves ran when he was coaching here. A running game and screen passes to draw the defense up and then take multiple shots down the field when the defense is least expecting it. It was that kind of offense that made Chris Chandler look great in 1997 and 98 and took the Falcons to the Super Bowl and allowed Vick to look awesome in 2002.

Well who was available that has a record that speaks for it's self?

I think the backlash was just an initial reaction to his hiring because he wasn't on anyone's radar and, to be honest, not many of us were familiar with him. Plus there was that little voice that wondered if there was some nepotism there. I am also one of the fans that have warmed up to him and look forward to seeing what he can do.

He has one of the lowest ranked offenses in the NFL, I think you guys are trying to be to optimistic about it. Almost like you dont really have a choice other than to look ahead and be positive. But seriously though, your offense will take a steep nose dive next year. Ill bump this next year when im right, I usually get to bump a few threads after correctly predicting the Falcons season ( such as Dirk Koetter hiring as soon as Mularkey got the boot). No hate, just common sense dictates you guys will suck hard.

Oh and you guys are to excited about Nolan, nothing good will come of that either, enjoy coming to this conclusion on your own next year when your offense/defense falters terribly.

So are you a Aints fan or Panties fan and why are you here?

With this OL and going by what he did with Blaine,

I give Matt Ryan three games, at most, before he is IR'ed!

MM had no choice , but to call plays to get rid of the ball in 3 sec!

Many Jags fans thought he was part to blame for him. Saying stuff like he doesn't coach up players at all. Never takes the blame for anything that goes wrong. They also called him MM 2.0 and thought so bad of him they considered MM a upgrade for them.

The point im making about fans is. They watch these guys. Like our fans turned on MM and BVG. Maimi fans where pissed at the franchise for letting Nolan walk. But Jag fans where excited to see Koetter go.

Lets take into account what we as fans thought here when we found out MM and BVG where gone. Most where happy for change. But Miami fans where saying we got a great coach. Jag fans where saying he is a great talker but a bad coach.

If there was no tie between him and Smith, i doubt he would be here. That was our #1 reason for looking at him and we where his only choice if he wanted to stay in the NFL. While im optimistic with the weapons he has in place that he could run what he wants. But if he fails he will get extra blame for "how in the world could you screw this up with that much talent"!

Maybe the Jags are a bad franchise, maybe the HC tied his hands to much, maybe the QC didn't help any at all. I just hope Koetter isnt all smoke and mirrors.

If he can do to Turner what he did to MJD i'll be pleased with Koetter. I read somewhere that Koetter was known for his vertical pass game in college, which would be nice to see in ATL.

It wont happen. This is Smiths team and we are gonna keep the playbook we have. We are a power run team. Now screens will be added. Some passing routes will be added. If he knows how to gameplan we should see new plays added weekly. Some of his favorite plays will probably get added.

But he isnt given the keys to change the entire O.

He said from day 1 Smith wanted him to add screens. That doesn't sound like Smith wants him to change the way the O is played, but more to just expand on it.

I also don't think Ryan is the best bet for vertical passing game nor do i think our line will hold up for it. We will takes shots but it wont be non stop gun slinging like NO. Look at the deep Jones TD and im sure we will see that kinda play again.

I'm not wowed by Koetter's record, but anything different is less predictable and therefore better. The Falcons O went stale under MM.

Koetter has Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Michael Turner, and Julio Jones. Add a decent O-line, and It would be tough to fail.

This is a good post and I somewhat agree. But I do think from watching Koetter from afar at both Jacksonville and when he was HC at Arizona he's going to be an upgrade.

I just want to see someone who proactively schemes and adjusts to opposing defenses in order to take full advantage of mismatches. Then, when the defense figures it out, he incorporates another look. Someone that is always one step ahead unlike MM who allowed us to be outsmarted... This will be a very important offseason... Ryan is probably already studying our new playbook...

I am optimistic on Koetter. However I am not sure how much it actually has to do with him. I just honestly don't think anyone could be any worse as far as route combos, and over all play design than mularkey. Plus I am ready to see the screen game put into play. I think we will be better. I am looking forward to it. Same thing goes for Defense, the only place to go from the mustache man is up, on top of that we got a proven D-Cordinator. Im excited
