Colts To Franchise Tag Robert Mathis

If Abe doesn't come back what options do we have at DE besides our rotational players in Sidbury, Matthews, and Biermann? I don't see any other options in FA but Mario Williams with Avril and Mathis off the table; not unless we trade for one, which with limited draft picks we don't have the ammo to do.

This is why most of the time I just sit back and smile when all of these various threads get started about: "Let's get Mario!" "Let's get Mathis!" "Let's get Osi!"

Most of the time these dudes stay exactly where they are.

That's a terrible mentality for the offseason. If you want a big name free agent then fine, but to go in thinking that you absolutely must have a specific big name free agent leads to very bad decisions.

Yea it is..... I honest to god think this team has talent on it.... I feel like the passive approach is the thing that hurt us.... When we played the saints aggressive on D... We had success vs the Saints on Defense...

I dont think we have to make this HUGE signing... I just think We need to make the right signings for what Coach Nolan is looking for... If thats Mario Williams.. Then thats Mario Williams.... If its another player then thats another player

2 out of 3 have only been in on spot duties and performed very well, so you never know what you are going to get before you try it. Robert Mathis was a 5th round draft selection. You think that the Colts thought they were going to get that type of player in the 5th round?

It's looking like Abe may get everything he's asking for, even if he signs with another team. As it stands, him and Mario are looking like the only premier rushers to hit the market, unless you count Mincey. If the Falcons want a true RE, they may have no choice but to pursue Mario. If so, I can only hope it isn't TOO expensive.

Im all for Nolan just making the complete switch to 3-4 . Look at the top defense and sack leaders . They are mostly 3-4 schemes . We just need a NT and a hybrid mix pass rusher guy like Andre Branch stand him and Sidbury up and go at em . Ray Edwards can play 3-4 DE he wont be a factor in pass rush long as he contain run

Cut Babs

Cut Jerry or use for depth at 3-4

Some say Bierman can stand up give it a crack

rebuild the defense under 3-4 scheme

I am "Mario or Bust" and I realize there is a very good chance that we don't get Mario.

To me, Robert Mathis is another "2nd banana" Defensive End much like Ray Edwards. While Mathis has been more productive than Edwards, at least Edwards is younger and bigger. All those writing off Ray Edwards, I think you are judging him too soon - Edwards was obviously damaged goods last season - if Edwards sucks this year, I will admit he is a bust and fall on the sword because I was in favor of Edwards signing.

Robert Mathis is smaller than John Abraham and is 31yrs old - so we get an old player who is slightly younger than Abe, and he is alos a smaller player - no thanks.

You all know that I want Mario Williams - can we get him? remains to be seen......what I do know is Falcons have no shot at getting him unless they try.

I think Falcons need young stars on defense and not old guys in decline. I would prioritize (given today's events) the following:

1) Mario Williams, DE-Texans (6'6", 283lbs, 27yrs old) - go all out and git'r dun!

2) Jeremy Mincey, DE-Jaguars (6'3", 270lbs, 28yrs old) - he looks good - this was said about him today in Peter King's MMQB in "10 things I think I think"

4. I think there's one player who should be affordable, available and sought after by any team needing a nickel rusher or maybe an every-down rush end: Jeremy Mincey of the Jags. With four sacks and 18 quarterback hits/pressures in the last four weeks of the season, Mincey, 28, put on a good free-agent rush. His name has come up three times since the end of the season with personnel guys looking for help pressuring the quarterback.

3. John Abraham - sign to a 3yr $27million deal only guaranteeing like $12 million - obviously somebody may give him more and I hope they do. I don't really like this option.

I agree with absolutely everything you said in this post. About Edwards, Mincey and everything else. Plus, we need a RE. Didn't Mathis play LE in Indy?

Yea, looking like our hands are tied. Like someone else said I can't believe TD is going to go with Kroy, Sid and Ray as the pass rush. Give Abe a reasonable 1-2 year deal (if he'll take it) and if not...9-7 or 8-8 here we come.

What is wrong with Sidbury? He played 220 snaps and of those 129 were pass rushing snaps. He had 4 sacks, 2 hits, and 12 hurries for a total of 18 plays affecting the QB. That comes out to one in 7 snaps he is affecting the QB. That is the same as John Abraham. Give the kid a chance. He could be our star that we have at a young age and not be paying that much for at the moment.

Maybe he will, but I wouldn't take that chance. Everyone thought 2010 was gonna be Biermann's breakout year. He had a solid start but it can be a lot different becoming a starter.

I agree with swift for the most part.

Peters has the strength t play NT, just draft another one for depth.

sign Kendall Langford

trade Babs unless they are convinced he can play 3-4 end.

IF the team wants to move, now is the time to do it. I would REALLY want the team to keep Lofton though if this move is made.....unless they think Spoon is better in the middle next to Dent instead of on the outside.

We're going to have to make a deal with Abraham. It's the only real option unless we want to put our faith into some unproven guys.

when making a deal with a 34yr old, I would rather make NO DEAL than a BAD DEAL. Abe is in decline and will play less and less and less - even a two year deal is risky. If we could sign Abe for 2yrs $16 million with $10 million guaranteed - that might be OK - but he wants much more than that and some foolish team will probably give it to him - just hope its not the Falcons.

If we do go in with our young guys... I will look for us to sign either Jason Jones or Kendall Langford to help collapse the pocket from the inside.

I will also look for us to draft a DE/OLB or most likely a CB in the 2ndround... We will play very aggressive so we will ned to draft a potentail NB so come in and compete with Franks... You must have guys that can play man coverage if you're going to be aggressive

It could be different, but we have far more pressing needs to fill that are not as bright as this one. We need to know eventually what we have. Do we have a GM that can find talent, or do we have someone that can draft a player when on the clock. The only way to find out is to play his players and move on from there. Sidbury came in with a far better spin move and pass rushing technique than Biermann. I think that Sid will be just fine if not we move on and know what we have all around from the top management to the players.
