I am not liking this back and forth game that might be played here. Needless to say, Your Thoughts!

Its has nothing to do with the tag. Its about the deal. We are gonna have Grimes back, its the deal that needs worked out. They have 0 reason to rush to sign now. They have all the time in the world to see who makes what, while working on a new contract.

I see no problem... When Grimes sign that franchise tag tender... That amount of money is guaranteed to him this year.

We know we have Grimes... We tendered him.. He is going no where... that cap hit doesnt show up until Grimes sign the tender... We basically gave ourselves more time to work on a deal... So yea... This is not a problem

Thread title is misleading.

The statement said “We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,” and why would they. The franchise tag insures no one else will sign Brent in fa, and he will be in Atlanta next year or he'll be traded. I'm sure Brent is still hoping to work out a long term contract. Why would he rush to sign a 1 year deal. If we get closer to the season and he refuses to sign it that's another story. Right now it's not an issue at all.

they are just looking for a long term deal....and so are the Falcons, so it doesnt really matter.

Ray Rice wont sign it either.....nobody is hating on him for it though.

Sure it is 'only' $10M, but if he signs a long term deal, he is guaranteed $20M likely...that i 2x as much, you do the math. And since he has been playing for peanuts here, I would do the same. This franchise has made no efforts to show their gratitude for what he has done here. "Oh, you had a pro bowl season, and the team finally has a top CB, which they havent had since the early 90's? Let us reward you with a 1 year, 2M dollar deal." Not to mention I am sure ATL brass got him to sign that by telling him a long term deal is in his near future if his play stays at a hgh level.

He should have gotten his deal last offseason, or at least sometime through this season. TD has nobody to blame but himself if Grimes doesnt play here.

Yeah, this is more about how the mechanics of these contract situations play out than anything else....No one is disrespecting anyone or being difficult.

Yoooo.. Come no now.. Some of you are making a problem out of nothing... You dont want Grimes to sign the tender right now anyway....It would add that 10 mil to the cap as soon as he sign....

Franchise tagging him gives us more time to work out a deal

Everything is good

I am not going to say whether or not I like this decision because it is not mine to make. I am not in his shoes and never have been, so it is hard to say. It's easy to judge when standing on the outside of a situation.

Ray Rice isn't overrated, undersized, and coming off a knee injury.

Good. F*** him. Grimes is a good starter to have at corner, but taking up a third of our cap space this year, im fine with that NOT happening. Not only that, but no one seems to be discussing the fact that he doesnt really fit in Nolans scheme (although Im sure Nolan has some say in whether he wants Grimes to be here).

How dare you use calm, well thought out logic. This is a time to panic!!!

Stalling tactic, nothing to worry about.

More than anything it help us, he's tendered and can't negotiate with any other team and as long as he doesn't sign there's no cap hit and we can negotiate with him to reduce the cap hit and sign him to a long time deal.

Grimes and agent have no leverage at this point - they are essentially neutered.

Just ask Logan Mankins and Vincent Jackson. If Grimes does not sign the tender and does not play - then he sits out and misses out on the $10.6 million salary for 2012 - and then in 2013 he is in no better position.

Grimes can hold out from training camp and wait until the last second and sign the franchise tag - but he will mainly be hurting himself as he won't be ready for 2012 season and greater risk for injury or subpar 2012.

Grimes will sign the franchise tag - at some point - if Falcons cannot work out a deal with him.

The entire story can be misleading. Why would they post that Grimes will be tagged and then post an update that Grimes wont be moments later.

Clearly you don't understand what "won't sign the tag" means. It doesn't mean he is going to hold out. It means he still wants to negotiate for a contract and that the only reason he was tagged was because the team didn't want him to leave. If he signed the tag, then he would be locked in for $10.6MM for 2012.

Turning your back on the guy is cool too. When he is wearing red and black again next year and makes a big play for us, remember not to cheer for him. And what exactly is "Nolan's scheme"? Nobody knows anything about the scheme he is going to employ here. But regardless, Grimes can play both man and zone, the only two things a corner does scheme wise. How does that not fit? Before you answer, man does NOT equal jamming the WR. That is a common mistake around here.

What does the new CBA state as the date the player has to report? Mankins and Jackson held out past the middle of the season before they showed up. With that said, the player has some leverage unless the new CBA altered it.
