Steel City Falcon
Grimes got the tag today... So does this mean they couldn't get the deal he wanted? Or did they just not want him to hit the FA market? I'm just wondering if they can't get a deal worked out before the season. What are the odds Grimes holds out in training camp? I'm just saying all these players getting the tag are threatening to hold out. Most notably Desean Jackson and Cliff Avril.
dirtybirdz10984
i think they will settle on a deal before training camp starts. Edited March 2, 2012 by dirtydirty10984
XXVIII-III
I wonder if we could have used a 1st round tender on him instead of the tag?

Ryanless Falcons
Then it only hurts him in his contract talks with anyone. He was rumored to not play in the playoff game for money and now will not play because of money again. That will move a lot of good teams away from him. We all know that this is a business, but if you can not play the game for 11 million guaranteed then you have a serious problem.
Infinitepwnz
ajc reporting grimes won't sign franchise tag...http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-falcons-blog/2012/03/02/atlanta-falcons-grimes-to-get-franchise-tag/UPDATE: Grimes doesn’t plan to sign the franchise tag.“We have no plans to sign the tag at this time,” said Ben Dogra, Grimes’ agent. “We hope to be able to continue to discuss [through] all the issues at the appropriate time.”POSTED EARLIERFalcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff told us at the NFL scouting combine last week that the Falcons were considering placing the franchise tag on Brent Grimes. The folks in the Grimes’ came told us yesterday, “I think he’s going to get tagged.”This morning on 790 The Zone, Dimitroff made it official.“That’s at the top of our list, as you could imagine,” said Dimitroff over the airwaves from California, where he’s on a scouting trip. “We spent a lot of time on this decision and we decided that we will put the franchise tag on Brent Grimes. We are looking forward to continuing discussions with his representatives. We are excited about having him back for the next year, if not more. This is a good thing for us as an organization.”He also addressed why the team feels that Grimes is worth more than $10 million.“Our feeling is [that] Brent Grimes is an excellent athlete who can move, cover and break on the ball with some of the top corners in this league,” Dimitroff said. “We feel comfortable with his abilities and the way they he’s picked up our system and has settled in nicely over the last few years that we’ve been here. . . You are always looking for corners who can settle into your system, cover, stay un-phased and make big plays on the ball.“Brent Grimes obviously does that against, big, small, fast or slow receivers in this league. We’re encouraged about having him back.” The radio station is the team’s flagship broadcasting partner and the team is moving toward breaking news with media outlets that they have financial relationships with. The Falcons have to start making some moves on their own players are they will become unrestricted free agents at 4 p.m. on March 13. The deadline to place the franchise tag on a player is Monday. While defensive end Kroy Biermann is set to sign a contract extension, several other deals are expected before March 13.He also stated that the team is not in negotiations with quarterback Matt Ryan for a contract extension at this time, the negotiations with middle linebacker Curtis Lofton are ongoing and the team wants John Abraham back. He did not reveal at what price the team wanted Abraham back. Here’s the list of the Falcons’ prospective free agents: Abraham, John DE; Chambers, Kirk OL; DeCoud, Thomas S; Douglas, Harry WR; Grimes, Brent CB; Hayden, Kelvin CB; Kelly, Reggie TE; Lofton, Curtis LB; McClure, Todd OL; Peterson, Mike LB; Redman, Chris QB; Romberg, Brett OL; Sanders, James S; Snelling, Jason RB; Weems, Eric WR and Zelenka, Joe LS. Most notably Desean Jackson and Cliff Avril. If he was 26 or 27, he could maybe afford to sit out, but as a short 29 year-old CB coming off a minor knee injury, he has to play. Even if we decide for some reason not to sign him long-term, it would still be in his best interest to play, so that he could prove to other teams that he can still play at a high level. vel
I doubt he holds out. The tag is just to keep him from the open market.

k-train
Apparently, Grimes is not signing it. :/Of course they (the Grimes camp) are going to say that right now, they still want that big, long-term contract. By refusing to sign, they will try to force the Falcons to get a long-term deal done sooner rather than later. However, Grimes would be doing nothing but hurting his own cause if he was to hold out, so his camp really has ZERO leverage.
Master Exploder
So it's pretty obvious we used th non exclusive tag on him, that means if someone signs him we get 2 1st rounders, come on Bengals sign GrimesHaha, I would love it if a team decided to use 2 1st round picks on a 29 year old undersized CB coming off of a knee injury. Stick Robinson and Franks outside, draft someone for the nickel and get either Poe or a LT with the 1st this year.
Ryanless Falcons
Grimes is kidding himself if he thinks that he is going to get anything longer than a 4 year contract. Corners abilities significantly decline when they start to hit 33-35 or so. If he does not want to 4 year contract see ya let another team get the cap hits after the four year mark. Steel City Falcon
Man this is why I didn't want this guy to get the tag.. I'd rather use it on Lofton.
Falcon Fanatic
I wonder if we could have used a 1st round tender on him instead of the tag?Since Grimes is a unrestricted free agent he can't be tendered. Only restricted free agents which Grimes was last year can be tendered.

Ryanless Falcons
He will be 29 before the season starts coming off knee surgery. Champ Bailey, Nate Clemons, Deion Sanders, Brian Dawkins(went from a feared ball hawk to a strictly in the box safety). I am sure that I could find one more if I thought harder. madman88
You cnt hold out until the season starts... This contract talk is his agent and the falcons... Brent isnt even talking to them... The tag is for two reasons1. To make sure he doesnt hit FA2. To buy time so they can get a long term deal done...This happens almost every year woth other teams trying to sign there player long term... No way this last all the way up to TC...
