Report: Saints want to pay Brees like a “very good,” not “great,” QB

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 1, 2012, 7:48 PM EST

If you think Drew Brees is a great quarterback, Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis apparently disagrees with you.

According to a report from Jason Cole of Yahoo Sports, Loomis thinks Brees is very good, but not great. And therefore Loomis thinks Brees’s new contract should be commensurate with what a very good quarterback, but not a great quarterback, gets paid.

Citing three league sources, Cole writes that Loomis made the distinction between Brees being “very good” and “great” in a recent discussion about the status of the soon-to-be free agent quarterback’s contract. When Loomis was asked why it was taking so long for the Saints and Brees to reach an agreement on a long-term contract extension, Loomis described Brees as “very good” when others called called him “great.”

According to the report, Brees and the Saints are about $5 million a year apart on a new contract. Which is apparently the difference between what a great quarterback makes and what a very good quarterback makes.

Yikes.. If true. Brees can definitely get paid like an elite elsewhere if Loomis truly believes that?

Some of you need to stop reading articles from profootballtalk or Jason Cole. Those are quite possibly the two worst "official" sources. This articles gives no context on what Loomis said anyway. It's purely written for clicks.

Plus, Jason Cole is a notorious Saints' hater ever since they disowned him after he wouldn't stop writing articles bashing Reggie Bush for the USC incident. Shoot, he continued to write another article even this past season bashing the Saints multiple times for "running up the score". How in the world is it classless and considered running up the score when you throw exactly 0 passes in the 4th quarter?

You can hear the words directly from Loomis's mouth however in regards to Brees several weeks ago... he said he wouldn't have a job anymore if he doesn't get Drew Brees re-signed. But these articles are popping up because there's absolutely nothing going on in the sports world right now. This is absolutely a non-issue. Drew Brees is signing on Monday, March 5th, and everyone knows it. That's why they're getting the articles out of the way now to build up a non-story into a story that they can write about even more when he does sign.

And here's how Loomis's "quote" likely went that Jason Cole is giving no context for...

Reporter: We all know that Drew Brees is a great quarterback and deserves one of the largest contracts in NFL history. How far apart are you guys in the negotiations?

Loomis: Well we still have a lot of things to work out, but he's definitely our number one priority. He's been very good for us since he and Sean came here.

Jason Cole: OMG LOOMIS DOESN'T THINK DREW BREES IS A GREAT QB.

It's the off-season. Gossip and baseless speculation, along with unnamed "sources"...is what the off-season is all about during the small time frame after the SB ends, and before FA begins!

Ummmm....

So, No one should believe Cole because he printed true stories about Bush? And then you say your disowned him for printing the truth? Wow.

Secondly, your imagined conversation doesn't make sense. Cole said he was quoting three sources and not Loomis.

And finally, how do you let the negotiations with a "great qb" progress this far?

Let's see:

  • The Saints were going nowhere until Brees became QB
  • Since he's been QB they are a regular SB contender (with an occasional off-year thrown in)
  • He plays like the HOF he will be
  • Leads them to a SB win
  • Every thinks he is a real classy guy - no one can say a bad word about him
  • Oh and he just broke an 30 year-old QB record

If he doesn't get paid then who does?
