ESPN Uses Another Racial Headline

(WSCR) Less than two weeks after ESPN posted a racial headline referring to Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin, the network is at it again.

In the hours following the Steelers’ release of wide receiver Hines Ward, the network published a story to its website with the headline “No Happy Endings.”

The headline may seem innocent enough, but when Ward’s part-Asian background is revealed, the headline takes on a different meaning.

Ward was born in South Korea and his mother is also Korean.

I don't see how it's a mistake this close to the last one.

Is it possible to

1. Not know about the sexual connotation of happy ending, or not be thinking about it?

2. Not know or not be thinking about the association of asian women to massage parlors?

3. Not know or be thinking about Ward's mixed nationality?

If any of these things happened, then it was accidental.

I'm assuming (first mistake) that more than one person checks it before it goes live so it's just hard for me to believe that more than one person missed it. Also, that people who are in a sports related field have not heard of "happy endings". I would think after the last snafu, they would be extra careful on their content.

You know what's funny to me?

The only thing that separates this headline from being comedy or racism is the umbrella that it's huddling under. This is actually so true for so many things in life. Things that happen in this life are either comedic or offensive, and in the end, the only determining factor is what umbrella you're holding.

If I had a sports blog and posted this story with this headline, does anyone notice or does anyone care? Say my blog is really popular, but it doesn't exactly follow the norm for being a professional and serious take on sports, but it's still filled with the exact same amount of information, does anyone freak out if I use this headline?

Now take this headline, with all the same information, and post it on ESPN. Suddenly it's an absolute outrage. ZOMG THIS IS SO HORRIBLY RACIST I AM TEH OUTRAGE!!!

No you're not. You don't care. Seriously, right now ask yourself, "Do I care?" Your answer is no. Because this is stupid and it doesn't matter. It's supposed to be funny. It's amazing how something posted under one umbrella can be viewed as humorous, but under a different umbrella it's viewed as offensive.

Stop being hypocrites. Learn to laugh. Stuff like this is funny. We are a country of headlines. Our mind is already made up about the content of an ENTIRE article based on the one line it's given as an introduction. I'm willing to bet that 80% of the people that are offended by this headline didn't even bother to read the article.

This headline is hilarious, and the article is even better.
