Flying Falcon
Mike Smith: We Want to Keep Michael Turner the Featured Back, But... --Sat Feb 25, 2012 --from FFMastermind.comNBC Sports reports with decreasing effectiveness and a $5 million salary, Atlanta Falcons RB Michael Turner could theoretically be a candidate for release this offseason. Speaking Saturday at the Scouting Combine, Falcons HC Mike Smith indicated Turner will be back with the team. “We want to keep [Michael] as our feature back, but we need to make sure we some of the other guys carries as well,” Smith said. RB Jacquizz Rodgers will be a bigger part of the offense in 2012. RB Jason Snelling is a free agent, so the Falcons will look to add another back. Smith made it clear Turner will stick around, he just isn’t likely to top 300 carries again. “I think the thing we have to do as Michael gets a little older is to start putting him on a pitch count in terms of the numbers of carries,” Smith said.http://www.ffmastermind.com/quickbits.php
Dharma Initiative
Turner is the least of our problems right now. I don't get people wanting to dump him. He's not as fast as he used to be but he still bowls people over and gets his job done
1989Fan
indeed Dharma. And before the comment is made....yes he gained a lot of his yards running against weaker defenses. Thats what teams do. Beat up on teams that arent as good.I would still love to see Turner have a chance to run again without breaking his first tackle at or behind the LOS! Trouble
I agree he is worth keeping and still can go. We need to expand roles and be more creatives though. Those bad teams know Turner is coming for them. They need to figure out how to stop him. Great teams think they know what Turner can do, we need to change it enough so they dont and make it hard to stop. vel
People complain about us "beating weaker teams". Well what if we were getting beat by those weaker teams?
Flying Falcon
Honestly, I think we need to trade Turner and get a pick for him. There are just too many good backs coming out in this combine. Younger, quicker/faster, and stronger backs. We need to get one and give those rushes to Rodgers. Quarterback
Turner may not be the back he was in 2008 but he's still probably a top 10-12 back in the league. No, our greatest needs are, in order: An all pro caliber LTAn all pro caliber CenterAn all pro caliber RGAnother all pro caliber DEAn all pro caliber DTAn all pro caliber Free SafetyAn OC with an imagination and a DC with some balls.Getting back to Turner...just imagine how much more effective he and our other backs will be when the defenses aren't stacking the line out of respect for our willingness--and hopefully effectiveness--at throwing the **** ball down field! Flying Falcon
No one trades for 30 year old runningbacksWell, something needs to be done. Cause, our OL isnt getting any better, Turner isnt getting any younger, too many good backs coming out this combine, and those carries needs to go to Rodgers. Now TD has a decision to make, cause it makes no sense to pay a guy 5 mill just to sit on the sidelines for the majority of the games. We dont have that kind of money to pay players for that. Warrick Dunn was and Rodgers is the SAME EXACT type of back that Warrick was in his youth. Rodgers can shoulder the load, but we want to be nice to ALL our players until they start asking for astronomical salaries, then we want to cuss, fuss, and ship them out. Flying Falcon
So, you all are "OK" with Turner carries getting limited while sitting on the sidelines making 5 mill?

Then he came back and said that they will have to put him on a "pitch count" in terms of the number of carries. That doesnt sound too good for a back that makes 5 mill. Dharma Initiative
So, you all are "OK" with Turner carries getting limited while sitting on the sidelines making 5 mill?I think limited means 250 instead of over 300. He isn't gonna use Turner exclusively on goal line situations

LOL!!!!!!! Rodgers isnt meant to wear down defenses. Did Dunn wear them down? No. He just ran past them. Shook them out of their cleats and ran right past them, untouched. That is what you get with Rodgers. A back with break away speed and nice moves to keep defenders off balance and dont have to worry about getting touched or tackled in the backfield. Especially behind our OL that we have now.

You're sadly mistaken if you think Smith means he's only gonna take 50 carries away from his 300 total. LOL!!!!!!!!
kevykev21
Acording to you, Matt Ryan sucks, and Turner is old and done. So where has all the offensive production come from?

Psychic Gibbon
So, you all are "OK" with Turner carries getting limited while sitting on the sidelines making 5 mill?Heaven forbid he doesn't get 300+ carries again and isn't worn out by the playoffs, or doesn't get the bulk of the carries when he has a groin injury again. Clearly he needs to be cut if he's only going to get about 220-250 carries per season so we can have an all star RBBC group of Rodgers-Snelling-Smith-Nance.
