The Defense Is Going To Be The Key For The Offense Scoring Success Not The Other Way Around

After watching this team for 4 years now since Matt,Smitty and TD got here we wittness them adding offensive piece after piece after piece after piece and was hoping that they could cheat on defense adding a big name just in 2010 to the secondary without attending to him to help him fit into the scheme did not work. I believe that they finally got it that this defense has to be attended to and tweaked more for them to create more scoring opportunities for the offense instead of the other way around the way that they were trying to do it by adding all of these offensive pieces for Ryan to play with.

They started by going out and getting Nolan and that was an indication IMO that told me that they plan on the defense providing this offense with a scoring chance to bury the game away.

if we are going to win a championship it is going to ride on the shoulders of this defense and not the offense and I've been saying this for a while now but I think that Smitty and TD have heard my cry.

however I don't think that all the splash defensive lineman we would like up front such as Mario Williams will not happen but I did see from the ajc that the Falcons may be interested in bringing a GA native back home to us

Robert Mathis.

If the D becomes the D that I know it can be than a championship will be well within grasp but if we try an continue to ride on the offense we will run out of gas again.I liked they old patriot way when they were winning championships and that was when they had a defense and they have not won a championship since but have made two SB appearances and that is it.

TD,Smitty ,and Nolan get us a real elite defense and we will go far into the playoffs.

Or, the Falcons could decide it's more important to protect their largest investment and load up on the offense- get a LT in FA, draft a TE & RB w/ the 2nd & 3rd picks, re-sign HD and have a killer offense. Which would help the D out.

They may sign a couple of mid tier FAs on D, rely on the the youngsters on the D and Nolan's coaching for this year, fix the D next year.

Would point out that the 31st rated D made it to the Super Bowl, and aside from the Dline, the Giants defense wasn't all that great.

^^^^^^^^^^

31st D is a misleading stat I'd like to see there numbers from the play-offs when it counted the Giants D was lights out.

Our defense on the other hand got straight beat down in the big games that mattered and if they don't inject some talent upfront I fear its 1 and done again.

This saying I believe Mike Nolan can make a difference but in saying this I'd love to see the FO commit to giving Nolan some throughbreds instead of mid tier I think if we gave him playmakers on all 3 levels defensively I think we have a good shot if we just upgrade with mid tier talent I will not expect miracles from Mike Nolan.

Defense wins championships, we've all heard that, well it was on complete display this post season (at least in the NFC) The two teams who's offense just couldn't be stopped was handled. The Giants really dominated GB, they pushed their line around like they did ours & GB for once looked slow & confused. SF was aggressive with the Saints, but they did what i want to see our defense do more of: turn the ball over for our offense. With the game being so tight, turnovers made the difference, not just in taking away a scoring chance for the other team, but giving your team more offensive possesions. Even the year the Saints won the SB, they had a ball hawking D that turned teams over often, including Peyton which sealed the game for them. I hope Nolan has them going after that ball this year

And you said exactly what I think that the falcons where trying to do because they kept saying that they wanted a more opportunistic defense but BVG and Smitty just did not know how to get it done. It's like they had a picture in their head about what they were trying to do but couldn't get a clearer drawing of it. Smitty needs to leave it to the artist Nolan who has done a great job in being able to get the best drawing from his defense to show up on the field buy bringing out every detail he could bring out meaning getting the best out of his players.

NE was 31st ranked D, not the Giants.

And to answer other posts- GB's Oline was decimated with injury, and NO turned the ball over 5 time, lost several skill players during the game and still scored 30+ points.

Wouldn't use either one of those games as a proof that good D win against good Os.

Meh

They have been being cheap with the defense since being here... Some ppl have fallen in love with the way we draft mostly skill positions.. thats nice and all, but the reason why we lose games and playoff games since 08 till now is both offensive and defensive lines...

If you ccnt protect qb you wnt score, if you cnt stop their qb, they will score.. thats exactly wat happened... Weather it be a game we lost, or a big game, when we lose thats the reason why.. not to many teams are as talented as us. As soon as we get some talent on both lines then we will have something special.. this team really only need a few tweaks, nothing major and we will be fine

Correct me if I am wrong but I had read a recent article on here (don't have the name of the article or author) that indicated that this offseason was going to be used to put big money into the defense and a couple of tweaks to the offense? Can anyone confirm that was the correct information?

I have said it before, and I will say it again. It matters not what you do great, so long as you do something, anything great. We have a good team, a very good team. We don't do anything great. The teams that win the superbowl do something great. go back and look. Not many teams to hoist that trophy without a great offense, or a great defense, or a great coach who can scheme and manipulate his team to beat the other based on their strengths and weaknesses. Let's make our offense great, or let's make our defense great. I don't care which one it is, but let's make a move one way or the other. trying to make both that way went away with free agency.

Completely agree. I don't want to see a sexy signing in FA. I really think we're set as true contenders if we can land a high-motored with a mean streak DT starter and high-motored with a mean streak OL starter. Throw in a skill position sleeper and I firmly believe we're in position to make some noise come play off time.

with today's bs rules on qb's and wr's i say load up on offense and score, score, score. i would rather have high quality offensive lineman than making big moves on defense personally.

This didn't workout for GB,NE or NO when it mattered it was basically a Giants Front 4 that through the spanner in the works here.I gotta think if we are being realistic here you gotta have a D that can keep these high octane offenses in the mid 20s to have a chance and in FA and the draft we better load up on front 4 guys on both sides of the ball to have any hope next season.
