67camaro
Falcons not “wasting any time” in contract talks with Brent GrimesPosted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 24, 2012, 12:45 PM ESTDivisional Playoffs - Green Bay Packers v Atlanta Falcons Getty ImagesThe Falcons want to keep free agent cornerback Brent Grimes. To do so, they will have to invest a lot of money at the cornerback position with Dunta Robinson already getting paid a big salary.Speaking at the Scouting Combine Friday, Dimitroff sounded optimistic that the team could retain Grimes.“Those are difficult discussions to have because they are high dollar discussions,” Dimitroff said to a group of reporters after his press conference. B”rent Grimes is a fine football player and we’d like to have him back. We have begun our negotions with his representatives.“Ben Dogra and Tom Condon are obviously accomplished agents. We’re not wasting any time with our discussions. We feel like we can come to a good conclusion to this negotiation.”We guessed last week that Grimes would ultimately get the franchise tag. Dimitroff recognized that the franchise tag is a consideration.

vel
Where is everybody that was wishing him good riddance because he quit on the team and bashing him and the likes? I'd love to hear them "rejoice" at the news that the FO is trying to bring him back. Just like I expected, #20 will be back in the red and black and a lot of you guys will look like idiots. I think they will get this deal done right before FA starts and leave Abe and Lofton to the wolves the way they are talking.

Nah, probably not. When they see the price tag that rumor will resurface.

1989Fan
that is great news in my eyes. It wouldnt suprise me if Dunta is asked to shift some money around to make more cap room this season. I could see re-structuring his deal freeing up 3M plus, beings than Big Ben freed up 8M in cap room by doing so.i also read a snippet in an article that said the FO has been in deep contract talks with Loftons agent as well. Once these 2 guys are back home we will have better idea what moves the Falcons can make in the UFA period and draft.gimme:Mark Anderson, DEMarcus McNeil, OTthen bring back Douglas, DeCoud and McClure and lets go drafting! However, I also stated that if he were to return, I was definitely going to make his jersey number the very first one that I purchase of the NIKE type. Hope we do get him back, if not, then I will get a Jones jersey.

Who would you be pissed at?Yes, in your eyes, him sitting out the game for money would be "wrong". But him playing the game on a less than 100% knee is too great a risk for all the hard work he put in to get to this point. Plus, it was a mutual decision with the coaches. Smitty said that. You sit your best corner when you know there is always next season. Even if it wasn't his contract year, I think Smitty sits him because Grimes career is longer than that 60 minutes. If we didn't have him this coming year because they pushed him too hard and the injury got worse, then it would be all out chaos on this board. slamee101
Why would our FO be wasting time trying to sign a selfish guy who quit on his team and was more worried about a payday than helping his team during the playoffs?!?[/sarcasm]This MB and its ignorance sometimes... vabchbirdlover
GTOH - Wasting time? Really, get freaking real someone! I guess it just dawned on the powers to be that the man's contract is now at a end! My goodness, the sheer stupidity of this organization at times astounds me. Hopefully, it's not too late to salvage the only bright spot in our secondary.
vel
not according to a snipppet in a recent article that suggested the team was deep into contract talks with Loftons camp! Yea I just saw that. Glad to see Lofton came to his senses. He is a cornerstone to this defense but he has limitations. I understand getting paid your worth, but hard balling the team is just stupid. He isn't elite or anything to the point where he could do that.I love LBs (even though I played safety) so I understand how a good LB corps can really impact a defense. We have that with Lofton and keeping the Bang Bros together will be fun to watch.
1989Fan
regarding Grimes and the Giants game....I wont hold that against him. The reason is, after his injury, he did try to come back, and re-injured the knee that very same game...it just gave out on him. I would be hesitant to do the same thing again as well.Had he never re-injured it the first time, I dont think we would be having this debate. It is easy to be an armchair NFL player and talk trash on the guy, but when you are the one who got injured, came back too early and re-injured it, you would also have second thoughts knowing if it happened again it could keep you out of the game for a whole year or longer if the damage is more severe. atljbo
I'd rather spend the money on the line, either side. This draft is a deep at the inside O-Line position.... I think we can find a good guard in this draft. We dont have to sign a FA for every position in need... With a deep Guard draft... Draft a guard in the 3rd round
Matt_The Iceman_Ryan
I'm not too excited about the idea of having 2 CB making more than 7 mil/year on the team....I think the cornerstone of a good defense starts up front and that is where money should be invested....look at the Giants, Texans, Bears, Steelers, Baltimore...they all have great DLine play or oustanding LBs making plays....With that said, If the FO thinks our defense will be better off having money in the secondary after hopefully consulting with Nolan, than let's do it....I'm just curious to see where we go with the front seven....Furthermore, I wouldn't put too much into this article...the author couldn't even spell Brent Grimes' name correctly or the word negotiation, and it was a paragraph and half write up........ vel
Yes, it would be wise to use the money in the trenches, but it would be equally dumb to let arguably the 2nd best corner in the NFL walk without a fight (keyword: arguably). Grimes is a top 5 corner. You don't let those walk.
jfalconsp
So if we bring back Grimes do we still pursue a NB in the draft or try and continue to develop Franks at NB? Owens looked better on the outside but I just don't think he can handle the NB position. If we go OG in the 3rd round, then we'll either go TE or DE in the 2nd round. Leaving LT, FS, and possibly DE to fill via FA once we re-sign Lofton, Grimes, and Harry Douglas. Definitely doable.

I think unless DRob comes out like Revis this will be his last season if Grimes is re-signed. Franks or Owens would likely take his place to open up like 7M in cap space. As for Houston, they invested big into their secondary this offseason, which is a huge reason they had the defensive success they did this year. Jon Joseph may have been the best player on that defense! As the league continues to evolve around passing, you need those cover guys. CBs and safeties. All of those teams listed also have at least 1 stud CB. If ATL lets Grimes walk, they have none. You cant lose Grimes because of a mistake you made on DRob. It is just unfortunate that the team is tied to DRob's contract for one more season no matter how he plays.
