FalconsSavant
So what does happen if a team is over the cap? I know several teams were over the cap last year. So what happens to the ones that are over the cap is it worth it to go over the cap to sign a Mario type player?
Roncatto
I remember reading somewhere that if you are over the cap heading into week 1 of regular season (so therefore all cuts finished) you can be punished by either fines or loss of draft picks Edited February 23, 2012 by Roncatto

muskokas finest ©
In addition to fines/loss of draft picks, the NFL can also force the team involved to void or restructure contracts.
The Falcon Jedi Knight
You get a slap on the wrist. I dont know why more teams just dont blow the cap and sign the players they want. Boohoo if you go over the cap - it's not like you get kicked out of the NFL. I say just sign whoever for whatever and take the penalty.
