TheRidder
John Abraham - DL - FalconsAfter speaking to the Falcons, the player rep for free agent DE John Abraham believes his client is headed for the open market. The Falcons are severing ties as Abraham goes on age 34. With no realistic in-house replacement, Atlanta will look to the draft and free agency for a new right defensive end. Pass rush was a problem for the Falcons in 2011, even with Abraham on the roster and Ray Edwards signed to play left defensive end. Mike Smith's defense tied for 22nd in sacks and ranked 20th against the pass.I think with this being said we have to go after a Top Tier DE.I say this because it is a make or break year for Smith and Company I think if we don't win a playoff game this year Mike Smith will be fired. So i think we will get one of these guys depending on who actually hits the market. In no particular orderRobert MathisMario WilliamsCalais CampbellCliff AvrilIf we don't get one of these guys our defense will be in real trouble with no Abraham. What do you all think?Because I don't want to see this anymore lolhttp://blogs.ajc.com/jeff-schultz-blog/files/2011/10/Packers_Falcons_Football.JP1.JPG
Creative
Obviously I'm hoping for Mario Williams. I don't think any of them would completely fill the void.. but we better bring one in or I've lost all faith and respect for TD and crew. kiwifalcon
Well G-Dawg Master Exploder and I have been argueing this for about 16 pages on another thread on page 1 also.We have to I think being how fiscally responsible TD has been with the Falcons $$$ over the last 4 years has lead us to this and with the fact we can't do anything realistic in the draft FA is the only place we go to get it done.I sure as h*ll hope we pay #90 and say welcome to the ATL young fella. Master Exploder
If we do decide to cut ties with John Abraham and go after a top tier DE in FA, then I would imagine our targets are going to look like this:1. Mario Williams2. Cliff Avril3. Robert Mathis4. Andre CarterI don't really see Calais Campbell as a legitimate option because Ray Edwards is not a blind side pass rusher and neither is Calais Campbell. Avril and Mathis have played their careers on the left side, but they have the capability of being effective from the blind side. I'd prefer to settle with Mathis if we were unable to bring in Williams, but Avril's age will probably trump Mathis's skill set. I don't trust Avril though. He didn't really turn it up until Kyle Vanden Bosch and Ndamukong Suh came into town, which is a big concern that I had with Edwards in the off season last year, who also benefited from having Jared Allen, Kevin Williams, and Pat Williams on the line. Andre Carter is not a very viable option in my mind. He's old, but he will be much cheaper than Abraham and he looks like he still has the ability to produce a solid pass rush. With that said, Mario Williams has to be the guy you go for in this situation. He's one of the few effective 3 down right ends in the entire league. He is almost identical to Julius Peppers in his mid-20's. I just don't see how you pass up on him. Our defense needs elite talent and he's the only elite player in free agency this off season. Psychic Gibbon
I'm not surprised. He wants $12 million per year despite only really being worth $4-6 million per year. If we're going to spend that much then we might as well spend it on Mario Williams, but I'd be hesitant paying anything more than that. madman88
I wouldnt get to excited aboht bringing in a top tier DE... Def since nolan has expressed of how he likes pressure applied with more blitzes instead just the front four.. i wont say theres not a need for one but more so no as bigg of a need if you can scheme a pass rush... That's the dumbest thing I've ever read on these boards, quite possibly the dumbest thing ever said on the internet.

More like 2.5 -3.5 a year.
FalconJim
Yeah, we'll get a top-tier DE.....IF, we draft Vinny Curry out of Marshall, that is. He's a monster, at 6' 3", 265 lbs. Quick, agile and NO history of injury. This would definitely take care of one of our needs on the D-line!!!As for Abe.....he's been a good one, but all good things must come to an end. It's time to put some youth on our D-line, and Curry would be a perfect choice in the 2nd, if he falls that far. Then just for good measure.....we draft UGA's C, Ben Jones in the 3rd, to replace McClure, who according to many is "NFL ready" since having a history of playing in a Pro-style" offense, Then, we draft UGA, TE, Orson Charles to eventually replace Gonzo. Everything else can be taken care of in FA, and our other draft picks... Edited February 23, 2012 by FalconJim

Falconcheff
The first of the "no sacred cows" finds the slaughterhouse. Everyone whooped and hollered when the FO made that claim; now that it's become a reality, panic sets in. As if our pass rush had something magical with 55 in the lineup; no wait, last I checked we sucked with and without him.Realistically, Abe last year had 3.5 sacks vs Jax and 6 the other 15 games. I think we can find that production off the bench in Sid and Matthews, but if not, the money I would've paid Abe is going to a younger FA. So be it.Thanks for being one helluva player for us, 55. Here's to hoping you suck for whatever team picks you up, so I don't have to read any whiny azz threads about what a mistake we made letting you go. madman88
What makes him so awful? 3.5 sacks?he lacks pass rush... He is more of a pwwer player which makes him predictable.. doesnt have the athletic ability to bend and get around the corner... No conter move.. i question his motor... I really hope your spewing that from a college scouting report, because that's just an incredibly dumb analysis or you are just entirely too critical, which is also dumb.I'm not going to say that he's a great LDE or anything like that. ****, I didn't even want us to pick him up last season. I wasn't impressed with him, but we got him on a fairly reasonable contract that didn't break the bank. It was a good deal. Anyways, he's a solid LDE. Sure, he could be better, but he's not a guy that's going to get 10+ sacks a season. He definitely had a down year in sack production, but he was actually a pretty good player if you look past that. I've seen him ranked as high as 16 for all DE's this past season. Sure, there are some flaws in the way some stats are calculated, but Mike Smith has been praising him all season. He's a solid starter and I would be extremely surprised if we were to let him go.
sandman35
Guys listen, you just can't cut ties with a talent like Abe after he alone gave our defense credibility. After he got here OC's had someone to worry about since the days of PT(PrimeTime). So How would it look to another player considering comming here just because we have a chance to get someone esle. Abe is HOF material get him some help and a student he can tutor. Then when he decides to retire a falcon we will have another member enshrined. Being a falcon is not a hobby its a way of life. G0 FALONS!!!!!!!!

We could get maybe one with our 2nd round pick unless they go to the combine and plummet. None of these guys will be available after the 2nd round. It would be nice to get them but this is not realistic.
