Carrying Over Cap Space

The new CBA gives teams the chance to carryover unused cap space by written request. This could be huge for some teams and apparently the minimum spending floor won't be affected by this so the only reason a team wouldn't do this is because they're pinching pennies.

that is good for up front money, but could also put a team in salary cap hades if they aren't careful.

you roll over $20 million from the previous year, use it up, but don't have it the next year. Works well for luring FAs with promises of big up front money, but the danger in that is that players quit once they have the bulk of the money in their pocket

I would hope that NFL teams have capable people in position to use this to their benefit. If a GM and his crew screws this up, then they shouldn't have a job. So I guess the only negative is possibly incompetence.

anybody know what the Saints had available last year? I would roll that over and give it in up front money to Brees in a heartbeat. That is one player you wouldn't need to worry about quitting on you

I think you guys had about 4 and a half million left over...that's probably a really good use for it

Yeah, I've seen variations from 4.22 to 4.5 million.

I am sure the saints FO is glad to have that knowing Brees, Colston, and Nicks are going to eat up huge chunks of your cap space. an extra 4 mil makes a world of difference.

As it stands now we will have about 30 million and that is with out releasing or redoing any contracts.

With one of the biggest FA class ever it comes at a good time too.

a little off the subject, but your statement did remind me of something about veterans

has anybody else noticed that veteran FAs seem to be making less of an impact with new teams than in years past? think that timing, chemistry, and schemes (especially on defense) have gotten much more complicated which means that even solid FAs won't have an immediate impact?

Honestly I think it has to do with the defense having to bow and ask the offense out to dinner while whispering sweet nothings in their ear.

When you get called just for tackling a guy it is hard to play defense in the nfl today.

Maybe it's just because what I've been subjected to as a Falcons fan over the years, but it seems to me that most of our free agent aquisitions haven't worked out over the years.

no...I am talking about a player who plays well with a team and then can't seem to meet expectations with a new team. the easiest transition on offense would have to be RB and TE. however, there isn't an easy transition on defense

Johnathon Joesph did well but he seems to be the exception to the rule
