From Whence Comes All The Vet Hate?

In the last few weeks, I have been browsing through this board, and there is one thing in particular that has stood out to me. That is the seeming hate that this board has begun to have for our established veterans. At first it was just people who were looking at possible non-scheme fits for the new staff, ala Turner and/or grimes, but now it has escalated to much more than that. People are demanding the trade, cut, or abandonment of Roddy White, Curtis Lofton, Todd Mcclure, Chris Redman, Jonathan Babineaux, Tyson Clabo, Stephen Nicholas, and Ovie Mughelli. I even read a Mock offseason where someone suggested that we should cut Matt Bryant who we JUST resigned. Now, I'll admit that I have indulged some of these ideas in my own mocks, but I am careful in them to say that I don't actually want them to happen. I mean can you actually imagine what our team would be if we were to release, trade and/or cut every person on this list? Are you all just insane? It is also compounded by the fact that most of these ideas assume that these established veterans can be easily replaced by either unproven rookies or already drafted players who have yet to see any real playing time. So please, for the sake of my sanity, dial back the cuts please. This team has enough problems without it losing everyone who has actually seen the field.

Trading turner would be a smart move, same goes for ovie, but noone is going to tuch him now, so redoing his contract would help...

Its all about saving money while bettering the team

The NFL is already saturated with RB talent and no one trades for a FB anymore. Whether you like it or not, Turner is returning and the only way they'll let Ovie go is by releasing him.

There's a difference between:

Sensible posting (we might not be able to afford Grimes/Abe/Lofton, Redman is expensive for a backup, here are some possible FA's)

Out-of-the-box thinking (Turner is aging, Roddy's peak value is now, Mughelli is coming off an injury, here's a fully costed free agency plan)

Stupidity (trade everyone, cut players who are paid appropriately like Clabo, Nicholas, Babineaux, Bryant, misunderstand the salary cap and have us signing Mario, Nicks and Finnegan)

If people only posted the 1st type, there'd only be twenty posts a day in TATF. I welcome the second type, and ignore the third.

I have read some constructive ideas that involve cutting/releasing/trading some of our veteran stars for the long term improvement of our team.

I dont agree with any of them, but at least the posters were able to get across thier ideas without the blatant bashing and hate that permeates this board in the majority of the threads.

Except for a handful of just plain idiotic posters who make a pasttime out of trying to push peoples buttons around here, i think most board members that write those threads have the Falcons best interest at heart, they are just a little extreme and misdirectional.

noone trades for RBs because there arnt many teams with a franchise back.. ive said this before if peterson was on a trade block u dnt think all 31 teams wouldnt be interested???

You only can trade something thats worth trading and i dnt have a problem with turner, and i kno he'll be back next year but putting a 1300+yd back on a trade block would intice some teams looking for a running game...

I think Arthur Blank's and TD's "Sacred Cow" comments in the postseason presser, and the fact that TD comes from the Patriots organization helped fuel wild specualtion that we were going to dump popular players while they are still prodcutive to get value out of them. Add the lack of a 1st rounder, and people start stressing that we don't have the cap room or enough picks to address all of our needs.

This is the absolute worst time of year on the boards. You don't win a Super Bowl and everyone starts screaming for everyone's head.

Wait... We should trade Turner because his talents aren't worth the money and there shouldn't be a dramatic drop off in production without him but he'll fetch a good price in a trade since franchise RBs are hard to come by because teams value good RBs so much? What?

As for my point, I can only think of a handful of teams who don't have either a franchise RB or a good corps of RBs. Recent drafts, especially the 2008 draft, has flooded the NFL with quality RB talent. Most teams have their guy or guys to run the ball and, in my opinion, we have our guy in Turner. All we really need to do is pick up an extra RB and then split his carries more effectively so he isn't running it 300+ times per season. Something around 230-250 seems better for him.

Turner is the most overrated player on this team.

Crap...didnt mean to "like" your post I meant to burn that statement.

No biggie. Thats why i liked the + and - stuff better...if i made a mistake someone would always come behind me and fix it.

So....you're saying the NFC leading rusher this year is the most overrated player on the team?

WOOHOO, we're going to the superbowl!!!

I love how people keep pointing to that stat. It doesn't mean anything.

1. Most teams split carries.

2. Most rb's in todays NFL aren't absolutely useless in the passing game

you should kno this man cmon... How many true franchise backs are in the NFL?? MJD, peterson, cjk, turner, who else??

My point being this is why you see teams going with the so called "RBBC" cause there are a lot of RBs but no special backs who can be that franchise guy...

And no it wouldnt be stupid to try and get value from a guy who CLEARLY lost something.. we ran turner into the ground for 4ys, the longer we wait the lesser his value will be..

That's because most can't be franchise backs. I think Turner should have been run less with the other guys picking up the slack and I still see value in that. I remember haven't no run game in the past. Ryan needs one regardless. Regardless.

i never said he wasnt worth it.. if i thought that then there would be no point in trying to trade him, cmon smh...

Anyway like i said, theres only a handful of teams that have a true franchise back... There would be some teams who would be interested in a power back, one jumps to mind is the jets... But your arugument brings up my next point... If turner gets around 230-250 carries do you think he will make it to 1000+yds again knowing how much he struggled down the end of the season... Thats why i think this would be a perfect time to try and see wat u can get... One year early is better then one year late...

Its nothing personal just looking at it as a business move..
