Is Mike Smith Really A Good Defensive Coach

First thing.... 4 years ago they basically told Michael boley he didn't fit here and they didn't like his play and how he fit into the scheme and he was our 3rd best LB

The last 3 years he has been the giants best LB, leading them in tackles, he swarms the field and won a super bowl, some of that might be because of the giants line, but makes you wonder what TD and MS were thinking, same can be said for Chauncey Davis, peria Jerry, robinson, Eric coleman, Chris Houston, checks Jackson......all players that didn't seem to fit into their strengths or were grossly overrated in talent and how they fit "our scheme"

Was it that mike smith told BVG to run his offense, or BVG ran his and smith never adjusted it when it was painfully obvious it wasn't working

Hope Nolan can change this

Boley was having problems with injuries and it seems like he came in light one year

and just was not playing at a high level. He was probably looking for a pay raise and

it was an easy mistake to make. We have rebuilt our linebacking corp very nicely.

Van Gorder did not get the most out of his defensive line. I can't tell you what the

problem has been but very few sacks lately. Babs has been a pretty good player

for us, Jerry was great in college, Edwards was a stud in Minnesota, etc. It could get

better around here with zero changes in personnel. That is a gamble I don't expect

them to take.

Our D was ment to keep everything between the 20`s. Let them drive up and down the field. Stop them from scoring in the redzone and wait for mistakes to create turnovers.

Bad thing is our D players where never that great. Abe has been our work horse for a pass rush, and we play the run well in a passing league.

Whoever it was, our defensive players never got better. Biermann looked pretty good and fell off the earth. Decoud looked good and fell off the earth. Robinson was good in a previous life. Lofton never became a 3 down linebacker. Chauncey got worse. Edwards looks worse. Jerry isn't any better. Babs got worse.

And thus the coaching staff was shaken up to bring in people who know what the **** they're doing.

I'm not sold on him. Even with the slight improvement of the defense. Reason being is that coaching involves evaluating your personnel and they haven't done a good job at that. This defense has players but are they the right players for what his scheme calls for. Not being able to get pressure of any kind, on a consistant basis, is depressing.

i don't see mike Smith having to much say with what Nolan does on defense that is why he chose Nolan because he feels better leaving the D in his hands. I'm not convinced that Nolan is just a Smitty decision though. He is more a TD decision than Smitty because to me there are questions coming up about the development of the players that TD has selected and brought over here. Smitty D was okay in Jacksonville but give or take they had only 48 sacks one time since he was the DC there and have averaged just over 30 sacks the other times he was there sounds familiar doesn't it. he may say sack are over rated but that is because he was not producing many of them with the front he had in Jax. TD said it best when he said that we have new coordinators that are older but still carry a current appeal to today's game . Teams are passing the ball more now than ever and in a game if they were depending on the run like they were then just stopping the run would make a team one sided but when teams are spreading 3, 4 and sometimes 5 wide instead of most running on 3rd and 2 they passing. We have to get more pressure since teams are doing this and Smitty defense will not work.

Lst start with.. Ofcourse he is the Ginats best LB.. They dont have good LB ... Another thing.. Did you see his last year here... I was a Boley fan but the guy played HORRIBLE.

ill take Nich and Spoon.

Also do i think Coach Smith is a good DC... Yes i do.. He showed that with the Jags.. I dont beleive in your HC also being your play caller on Offense or Defense (only a few has mastered that) ... As a HC you have to think over all as a team

Coach Nolan

"The best job in football is coordinating," Nolan said. "You get to be hands on with the players. You get to coach. You get to call plays. As a head coach its really minimal. You don't do as much of that as you think you might like to."

"Even when you try someone is pulling you away and saying you've got to be over here doing something else."

Well this entire line of thinking is stupid as ****. I don't care what your "scheme" is you design your scheme to fit the players strengths. That's the difference between BVG and Nolan. Nolan will put players in positions to succeed. Instead of beating his head against the wall saying "they don't fit my scheme".

I didn't say his defense wasn't good but his sack totals were not stellar except for the 05' season when they had 47. His defenses today have become one dimensional and the game began to change as he got over here as far as offenses go they are more spread offense now and the scheme he uses has become obsolete and to predictable needs a change and Nolan is it. you can't go into a game attacking an offense the same way you attacked another that will not work. You can't try and make a player fit into your scheme either. And if you don't have enough pass rush up front there is nothing wrong with a blitz

Smitty looked like he let BVG do his thing within the scheme that he gave him... Saying that it did look like smitty didnt like certain plays... more so looked like he would have called something different but who knos...

But again smitty doesnt look like the type to step on ppl toes...

What line of thinking is stupid? Dude, get a clue as to what I'm saying. No one forced the players or the scheme on Smith and his regime. They picked these players based on their skillset to fit their scheme and it hasn't worked out for them in four years.

I don't really think this is a fair question...

The Falcons defense has improved EVERY season since this regime has taken over, and while Smith was in Jax they built a rep as a stout defense regardless of their sack tally...

I doubt that is by coincedence...

+1 for the hottie that is stretching it out !!

That's what I'm saying man. If the d was on the up and up as a hole then what's the problem? I think the problem came from BVG more than it did MS and I would love for someone to prove me wrong. MS came here to be a head coach. He probably splits his focus between offense and defense.

What about TD then, why pick up Robinson who plays a hard man, when BVG plays a soft zone, Some of TD's moves seem impulsive, ohhhh **** we need a CB,well let's look around......robinson is available, Ohh ****. We need a WR, well let's get Jones, Oh. We need DE depth, let's sign Chauncey Davis to a long term contract,

Robinson is better suited in Nolan's D, Jones is better suited in Koetters O, Davis wasnt suited for anything Hope TD. Thinks this one through. And doesn't just REACH for the whomever at LT/RG. And actually thinks about what scheme we run

Boley got arrested for beating up his wife. That, along with the fact that he was average at best in our system, is what sealed his fate here. To add coal to that fire, he is currently under investigation for physically abusing his 5 year-old son a few months ago.

Wait hold on a second Robinson was a high priced pick to bring in as would anyone else that has prospered well with their abilities that this year will probably be an overpaid athlete or two I admit that. this is Robinson year to redeem himself if he can flourish in Nolan's defense in 2012. Julio Jones I keep telling people is the best choice TD made. If you look at what is coming out in the next Couple of years according to what the Falcons may need I'm sure that is part of what TD is basing his choices off of and Jones was in a good receiver class in 2011 so get him. The best receiver right now and one of the few talked about in 2012 is Blackmon and there are to many questions about his speed and hands at times and after this draft may not be a good receiving unit in 2013 or 14 so 2011 was the best year to jump and get this guy. We wanted A.J. and would have made the jump to get him if Cincy let us. TE is deep this year so look for us to snag one either 2nd or 3rd round we don't have a first but with TE we don't need one.And us taking a TE in the 2nd or 3rd round is not because they are not good if they are that far down but teams still have other needs and ours is a TE since Tony G. may be gone and our offense thrives on it with MM or Koetter. And if I'm not mistaken we didn't cut Chauncey because he wasn't good but we needed the cap space and you know how that goes and they felt that we keep someone cheaper cause chauncey may not have wanted to take a pay cut. Plus Chauncey made a few great plays for us down the stretch particularly that pick six that he made off Dree in 2010 in week 14 the day after Christmas.

This is the year where everything should come to light on TD picks Matt Ryan and Smitty Are they the fault of a lack of coaching, picking talent or throwing the ball not being able to win the big one or are they just a victim of lack of coaching talent around them poor scheme bad development of players we shall see after 2012.
