mrfahaji
Do you draft by need, or by value? Well I think clearly the best strategy has to be a mixture of both. There's very little point drafting the best tackle available if he isn't good enough to outshine Svitek (or Baker...).With our first pick being 55th (?), I can't see that we will be able to pick up an excellent OT unless we take a gamble, and history has shown us that Dimitroff loses when he gambles on O-Line in the draft. We could still get a decent OG, and if there's a strong one on the board in round 2, I say that's the direction we go. But, there are a few reasons why Tight End might be the best option this year. We definitely need one, and the idea of 'learning under a Hall of Famer' has been discussed many a time. So, why else? I actually need some help filling in some gaps to my theory, so here goes:1) Apparently this year, unlike last year, is deep with TEs. I don't follow college, it's hard enough following the NFL over here. Is this true?2) Tight End is not a popular pick with early rounders. Kyle Rudolph went second round last year and he was one of only a handful of prospects. More choice at the position probably means teams won't be desperate to pluck TEs early.3) How many teams need Tight Ends? I've made a list. The Colts (Clark, getting on a bit), the Redskins, and a couple of other teams surely have too many holes to fill to worry about a TE early:Broncos, Raiders, Chiefs, Dolphins, Raiders, Bills, Cardinals, Seahawks, Bears.Even amongst these teams, I'm not sure how many of them a) Really need a tight end and b ) don't have more pressing needs. Any suggestions for additions/removals from this list welcome. In conclusion then, I know that Tight End is not desperate for us, YET. But given what I have outlined above, it might be the best value/need trade-off available to us in the second or third round.Oh, and one last point. I know this year was a bit disappointing, but look on the bright side, we might not be picking until 55, but we're still picking before the Saints! tobyd77
I see the Falcons taking a Tightend in the second round also. There as been some prospects that the Falcons have been looking at but the one who reminds me of Tony G the most is the Missouri TE Michael Egnew minus his blocking ability because he is not the best blocker but Tony G. can help him with that because he has great hands and decent speed. I would take him but either way with that said i see TE the safe pick for the Falcons because they will be able to good the best pick at that position. plus TEs play a big part in Koetter's offense he used Mercedes lewis a lot in Jacksonville. SBorBust
I feel like a broken record (or a paid advertiser) but I like LaDarius Green from ULL...he's strictly a receiving TE right now but he's very aware of the fact he will to block at the next level. He's being projected in the 4th/5th round...which would allow us to get quality line help in the 2nd
*TMo*
I like your point of not drafting players who do not have the potential to be better than who we have already. It's a wasted pick and very few fans consider that. It validates your point about the tight ends and possibly a guard only because occasionally there is value at guard at pick 54. Of course the exception to that point are the players who could potentially replace an aging starter like the case for Tony Gonzalez. Good post. Geneaut
I'd be happier spending our 2nd rounder on one of the lines. OG, DT, or DE.
crankdatfalcon
No more spending high round picks on DE's....We need someone who is going to make an immediate impact and not be a project..With that said, id take TE orson charles from UGA...dude is a beast and will be an immediate impact on the other side of gonzo..more toys for matt can never be a bad thang. MattRyan2Canton
build a fortress around matt ryan first. so he has a pocket to step in to, to make those laser throws. Edited January 25, 2012 by MattRyan2Canton

crankdatfalcon
When did we spend high draft pick on DE? In '07 on JA98?you know how the saying goes, fool me once, shame on you....once is enough..We dont need any more projects on the line. We need someone with experience, not a rookie, especially not knowing if ja55 will be back.Maybe if we had some solid veterans whom that rookie could learn from then yea, but we dont. Cheyakita
Can we ever have a thread without someone talking about the obvious?? We all know the line needs to be handled first and foremost, so let's say it's been addressed before the draft and discuss our options then for the draft.I like this idea as well but Coby Fleener would be my choice in the 2nd, Egnew in the third. 74ice
we might get an 8th round pick for dahl...I seem to remember those picks are announced in March
Sleepy27
Seeing how tight ends are becoming just like wr, graham, gronkowski, hernandez,Davis, I believe tight end would be good as well
FlyHighFalcons
For the millionth time: We have SEVEN POINT FIVE MILLION DOLLARS coming off the books next offseason. We can address it with some of that cash then. What recent team has won a superbowl on the back of one of these wide receiver/tight end prototypes? The Pats are there, but we all know that Brady is making Gronk a lot better than he really is. Francis York Morgan
We can get a good TE in the 3rd, get a DE in the 2nd.

I agree. Sidbury just might pan out and Matthewes is in waiting.I believe Nolan can coach them up. Although I wouldn't mind a big body in the middle who can collapse the pocket.Charles would be a dream pick so I doubt if we get him. PapaJoe
The Redskins do not need a TE. They have Fred Davis.

I agree that the early round picks need to be spent on the lines, but also see the logic in not drafting a position we already have if our present, under contract talent is greater than the draft pick. This is the draft/offseason where TD is gonna have to earn his paycheck. Holes on both lines, in the secondary and needing a franchise back sooner than later...
