5 Steps To Becoming A Knowledgeable Fan In 2012. (For Those Who Think They Know It All)

1: Put down the video game controller once in a while and read about football. There is a wealth of information available that was written by great football minds. None of the information was obtained by playing the various versions of Madden.

2: After getting a better understanding of football from step 1, study offensive and defensive plays by trying to determine what the play was designed to do. Look at the entire unit that is on the field when looking at film and not just where the football happens to be. Very often with the Falcons, the problem has been the design of the play.

3: Moving on from step 2, learn the difference between failure in play design and failure in execution. For example, an overthrown pass to an open receiver,a missed block, a penalty or a dropped pass is failure to execute while a running play designed to go between the tackles against a stacked line is poor play calling.

4: Get an understanding of the NFL salary cap and the limitations the team has as far as signing this player or that player. Football is business for players and they are not going to sign with the Falcons for millions less than they can make somewhere else. The wish list for players that we see in this forum sometimes might as well be started with, Dear Santa.

5: Opinions vary and that is not only true of the fans, but sports analysts, coaches, GMs and players as well. That is why different coaches have different schemes, different GMs value player abilities differently and why players believe or fail to believe in a coaching staff. Becoming a knowledgeable fan won't make your opinion the only right opinion. It will just keep you from looking like an idiot. If you want your opinion to be respected, respect the opinion of others. Otherwise, you still look like an idiot.

True.

Just wait 3 weeks until this board goes mad with the "Trade for Super Mario" threads, irrespective of the cost.

Most fans have no re4gard at all to the implications of breakig the bank for the top FA, or trading multiple draft picks away for some draft pick that they covet.

They desparately want us to trade multiple picks for a player like Julio Jones, and then slaughter the FO for not building a better OL.
