Trading Roddy

Recommended Posts

I know it's not a great idea, but I keep thinking about it...I mean, there have been a lot of issues recently. So, I decided we should make a pros and cons list.

Pros:

-Ryan and him had been "beefing" apparently, no need for that

-He led the league in drops last year

-He's getting into his 30s, will be slowing down soon

-Value will steadily decline following this year

-We need picks in the draft and are deep at WR

-Not the same, might be because of Julio and not feeling like the #1

-Can be a diva

Cons:

-He's freaking Roddy White

-Amazing on 3rd downs

-Great possession receiver

-Wouldn't have two #1 quality receivers anymore

-Chemistry with Ryan is extraordinary

-His laugh is awesome

-He's freaking Roddy White

Feel free to add. I'm not trying to say that we should or shouldn't trade him, I'm just trying to see the opinion of the MBers and what exactly they feel - how they view #84.

84 once was the nearest thing this team had to a swagger. We've darn near neutered the guy this season. Checked out roddywhitetv this year? He ain't there no more.

Yeah, he's been Droppy White, but he's also a huge part of the reason this team is where it is. Dance with the one who brought ya.

In a nutshell:

Pros for trading = he's very valuable.

Cons for trading = he's very valuable.

His jersey might not be so vital for us a little later in Julio's development. However, right now you don't dump the only guy who shares a brain with your QB. Ryan will be worse for it.

@carl Hence reason 5 of the cons list.

We would be stupid to trade Roddy, we got Julio for a reason. To be more explosive and to add the final piece to our offense (minus OL). If we traded him it would put us a step back instead of going forward like we wanted to do when we acquired Julio.

Hence reason 4 of the cons list.

Just looking for input folks...I do love Roddy, but I'm nervous about how he's been this year. Hopefully a full offseason and reassurance that he's still the #1 will do him good.

THIS!

Although I like the idea of this thread to invoke thought-provoking discussion; beats being drawn in by threads entitled, "Baldinger slams Falcons o-line".

I understand your concern, and it is legitimate, BUT I feel the season was just a him being in a funk. Even this "funk" still yielded well over 1,000 yards and I dont know how may receptions, TDs and critical receptions on drives and third downs. I remember Randy Moss going through this same thing in OAK and then turned around and had one of the best seasons by a WR.

I believe a fresh and full off-season along with these personnel changes may help.

HOWEVER, what if a team comes along with an offer too good to refuse. . . . .I believe such an offer could never exist.

Roddy isn't going anywhere even though I'm fairly certain this is the last offseason they'll get optimal trade value on him. They don't necessarily need to trade him, they just need to restructure the right contracts, cut bait with some dead weight, keep the right players, pick up the right free agents, and then draft intelligently. They don't have that many holes in the roster and when they're plugged the team will do much better, especially the defense.

He is a great possession receiver, no doubt about it. Why all the drops this past season? They ALL are gonna drop some, but who knows why Roddy got such a bad case of the dropsies? Some have said that he has Julio in his head, but I doubt that. Jealousy? Really? Naw.....

It'll now be up to Koetter to figure out how to best employ White and Jones and he'll have the benefit of OTA's and a full training camp to do just that. On paper, the combination of the 2 of them looks almost unstoppable if schemed correctly.

I think the FO put the smack-down on his ish talking. I fear they may have inadvertently affected the guy's confidence and his subsequent play on the field. A little smack-talk is a good thing.

I think his problems stemmed from his overconfidence during the preseason and then a slow start which left him frustrated for the entire season.

I'm assuming that there is a Wrer in the draft that can come here and make an impact???I think not and before you go down the route of getting HD and all the rest more innvolved no i don't see it.

Roddy is a key piece and 1 of the core pieces the FO mentioned they would move foward with trading him now would be absolutely stupid we'd set the offense back years.

Sure he was up n down this year but under a new OC we'll see what happens i have a sneaking suspicion we will seea more focused Roddy next season.

I think that we can't trade him it would be IMO a serious cap hit because you know he has bonuses and incentive from when he got that contract extension in 2009 and it would be to risky. We have to sign HD back so that we can finally see what koetter can do with these guys all on the field. I'm hoping we have our Sean Payton who knows how to maximize the talent we have without being overwhelmed. form that interview I read on him about x's and o's indicates that he does.

http://xandolabs.com/2011/07/dirk-koetter-exclusive-interview/

I don't believe that Koetter would do that without exploring what this offense can be with Roddy and I believe that koetter will be able to do just enough to stroke RW ego getting him and everyone else the ball like Payton did in 2009 when he had like 3 or 4 guys that caught for over a 1000 yards a piece. Brees was spreading the ball around well on their way to the SB that year.

I think it's mostly a good thing amongst fans, not players. I like how the Pats handle it all,...stony silence,....little if any smack-talk. They just go out on the field and get it done and if they don't win, they don't lose as much face. I call it "professionalism". Trash-talking can be fun, but I don't see much place for it outside of the locker rooms and especially on social media.

Edit to say: Leave all of the trash talking to us pro wrasslers.biggrin.png

Some guys need it. Some guys don't. Whatever gets you amped, I suppose. Nobody on O seemed amped in our last game.

No they didn't, but it would be a long shot to say that's because Roddy wasn't tweeting trash. And when he was tweeting trash earlier in the season, the team couldn't back it up on the field.

Roddy and Gozo had a "behind closed doors" talk and I can only imagine that the old pro Gonzo politely asked Roddy to STFU. It was distracting and in the long run not necessary. Trash 'em on the field, not on twitter.

Some sports stars are superstitious guys. Some guys won't shave when they're on a winning streak, etc. You don't question it. You let them do whatever it takes to keep the magic going... because it's all in their heads anyway.

I agree Roddy tends to get waaaay too mouthy. I wouldn't mind it if he could always back it up.
