Outdoor Stadium Vs Dome

Recommended Posts

Why is it when someone talks about an outdoor stadium, people talk of not coming to the games? I have heard the excuse of how hot or cold it will be. The rain, and very slight possibility of snow. Isn't this what football is all about? I personally think that it would be nice if the Falcons could play a couple of games in Sanford or Bobby Dodd Stadiums to test the outdoor elements. It seems that we can't play well outside, and I think it time to start.

Blank has already decided on an outdoor stadium. Another lot was just purchased. They may break ground starting 2014. At the Falcons training facility in Flowery Branch they have 3 "outdoor" football fields in which they practice. I don't buy the notion that some teams play better indoors. That's something the lazy media throwout every time a dome team heads to an outdoor stadium especially if they are from the south heading north. Guys like Ryan played at Boston College as well as many other players.

Tech and UGA fans still show up for the games. I think you're comparing apples and oranges - we were a really bad team when we had an outdoor stadium. No one showed up at the dome until we started winning regularly, either. Just win, and people will show up where ever you put the team...

Ummm Bobby Dodd only sells out if UGA, Clemson, or VT are in town. And thats because the other school brings enough fans to fill it up.

My opinion..... Outdoor stadium will be good for Falcons. I think that once we can start evaluating our own players playing in the elements (albeit no snow), the better off we'll be. We need to lose that "dome team" stigma. If a team can play outdoors regardless Of the elements, you obviously can play anywhere. Climate controlled stadiums and field turf do not necessarily give a team like New Orleans "home field advantage".

I love Atlanta. Born and raised here. The people who trask talk the city may not even be from here. The transients are ruining the city.

Question. I don't live in Atlanta (I live just outside Toronto Canada), but I've noticed during 1:00pm games that the dome is NEVER full. I've heard that in Atlanta, church is a big thing and part of the reason why there are so many late comers. Is this true as I'm baffled as to why the dome is never packed to start a game. And why the **** is it so quiet?? I know the opposing offense must love being there because it's so **** quiet that they have no trouble calling plays. Please fill me in. Thanks

Inspite of the popular consensus here, I actually think NFL football should be played outdoors in an open air stadium; elements be damned.

Real talk. Serious lack of civic pride in this town, thanks to people from larger cities and small towns moving here and bitching about my city. Maybe they'll wise up and move the heII away.

The reason the stands are so empty at kick off at 1:00 games is because of the tailgaiting. The drinkers are having

that last beer because once in the Dome they have to pay a record 7.50 a bottle to continue.

I was born and raised in Atlanta. Lived in New York and L.A. I promise you, these folks ain't talking ish. This reminds me of those punk kids from your neighborhood that didn't want to come outside and play with you and the others.

Steal the plans for Reliant Stadium....problem solved.

I was thinking the same thing. I went to our game with them this year...even though I'm trying to forget that one. But they have grass....and the ability to open.....best set up to meet both criteria. It's pretty neat how they move the grass in and out of the stadium with large skids that are numbered for placing the puzzle together.

Never been to a game where the roof was open @ Cowboys stadium, but the games are so much more enjoyable when not sitting in a 90 degree 90% humidity night game at Texas stadium. I can't imagine how that place was in September during the day and I can't wait for my first open roof/doors game at the new place.

Games start in Sept, you may only get a few games in the heat, 90% of the rest of the season will be in cool weather. We are not a AFL team, we need to be a real NFL team. Right now the Dome is our blanket.

Football stadiums should not be built to coddle fans. They should provide parking and a seat and food and bathrooms. And Thats it.

If you are a fan of the team you will come to the stadium no matter what.

Not true. Unless you are the Packers and can sell out for decades into the future, more effort should be made to lure the fan away from their 50" LED, cheap beer and La-Z-boy recliner.

Yeah, it is about rain and snow. I have no problem with that. But I DO have a problem sitting in direct sunlight in red and black when it's still in the mid 90s in November. Some of these tailgates the past few years have been brutally hot. I don't cherish that thought for an entire game.

Retractable roof is the only solution imo.

I burn up like h*** at the Braves game, but I love the h*** out of it. It's a real experience.

The ones that I know that live here sure as heII do. It's easy to point them out since there are so few native Atlantans here, at least compared to the scores of transplants.

Man, you guys need to leave outside of Atlanta sometimes. I promise you, there are a lot of people born and raised here in Georgia. People that come from other cities usually only know of Atlanta. Besides, the tranplants are bigger Atlanta Fans than a lot of the natives.

I don't get the retractable roof idea.

If football is made to be played outside in the elements, then build an open air stadium and play in the elements.

With a retractable roof, teams always close it when there is a hint of bad weather (rain) so why have it if it's only opened on clear days?

If you want to play outside, play outside at every home game and save the money a retractable roof would cost. Or build a dome if youre worried about heat and rain.

I've lived in some of the biggest cities on Earth, and been to the 8 largest U.S. cities plenty of times. My beef is with people here that don't like being here. Transplants may like Atlanta more than Georgians or people from the 'burbs, but I meet very few of them here or anywhere. The ones I know like the weather and cost of living here, but they ***** about the sports teams and lack of "big city" amenities more often than not. Feel lucky that the people you know don't, because my experience has been very different.

Lots of Atlantans and Georgians really do need to see more of the U.S. and the world, but I guarantee I've seen more of both than they or you have laugh.png

If football would have begun indoors, it would still be indoors. Back in the day, there was no choice but there is now. I sat outside at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and I will never go back to outside. For my $100 per game, I want to be comfortable. Outdoors in Atlanta is hot, cold, and a few weeks of good weather. I will not sit outside nor will I pay a Ticket License fee.
