falcon057
Jan. 17, 2012 12:21 p.m. - by Larry Holder - Report: Nicks expects to leave Saints All-Pro G Carl Nicks is expected to leave the Saints when free agency opens in March, ESPN reports. Nicks is expected to command one of the bigger contracts for a G in league history. It would be difficult for the Saints to carry two sizeable contracts for Gs with Jahri Evans, who signed the biggest contract for a G in league history two years ago. Saints RapidReports Carl Nicks has blossomed from a guard who dropped to the fifth round in 2008 to an All-Pro OL -- one of the best in the league at his position. The Saints would undoubtedly love him to return. The problem is that New Orleans paid fellow G Jahri Evans the richest contract for a guard in NFL history. Nicks will command more than Evans. Saints RapidReportsCould we use Abe money to sign him? can Sid and Mathews step up under Nolan?

vel
I actually have been saying this all season but have a change of heart. Just get Gaither and spend the money elsewhere. Nicks will want a crazy amount and we would risk losing Grimes. Draft a RG. Spend the money on Gaither and go after defensive players, like Mathis or Griffin. Flying Falcon
If we get him, can we slide Blaylock to LT?
UnrealfalcoN
ben grubbs, gaither, and Grimes > Nicks
Abe
He is another example of how you can find a great player in later rounds.
muskokas finest ©
With a hole at LT, big contracts at LG and RT, it's not very good value to spend so much on a RG. The concentration of cap space in one area will force other gaps on the team.
falcon_ace
He is another example of how you can find a great player in later rounds. The problem is we cant find it.We need all pro O-line. If you need to win in playoffs get a awesome All pro line.

YoungHeezy
We need to pursue Gaither and see what we have in Mike Johnson
Flying Falcon
We have to let grimes go. No ?No. Then we would end up looking like the Aints. Sitting at home anyway.
vel
Jared Gaither and drafting one is cheaper. Johnson, I truly think, is the RG as of now. He never got a chance to compete with Reynolds. He had the concussion early, then came back and was making a push then broke his foot. We don't know what we have in him but he was drafted to play, not as depth. falconidae
Think Nicks would be too expensive to sign here, but would love to see him in another uniform next year. Aside from Brees, he's probably the most important player for the Saints to sign.
X-Man21
For the vertical pass game this guy has already proven that he is worth it. This is a vital pick up here

I wanted Nicks but now I'd prefer to just keep Grimes, Lofton, and company and pick up Gaither, who I'm getting a feeling the Chargers may not be able to keep him after seeing the rest of their free agents. Maybe we can pick up someone like Silatolu in the 3rd round for a good value, high upside pick to fill the void at RG.
tobyd77
If he is out there you best to believe the Falcons are gearing up to pay him. I believe that that is why the got Nolan instead of Spags because Nolan has a track record of getting the best out of his players where as IMO Spags may have to spend a little to get the line the way he wants it and we can't afford to do to much more on that side of the ball and not boost our o-line. FlyDirty
I don't want us to make a sexy splash in Free Agency a la the Dream Team last year. We did that in the draft and kind of shot our wad. Will it pay off...I think it will...but I'd be happy picking up a couple or so high-effort starters that are truly upgrades over what we have. He got hurt and that's why they needed Gaither. Marcus McNeil just signed a 6yr $48M contract as their LT.
g-dawg
If Nicks leaves the Saints, I say "go get'em"........sure we will overpay but we can afford to. Falcons can extend Matt Ryan and lessen the cap him. Falcons can let Abe go and Michael Turner's money will only be on the books one more year. I think Falcons will be fine with the cap.Falcons need a new attitude on the Offensive Line and someone that can mash in the run game and keep pressure off Matt in the pass game - pressure up the middle is the worst thing that can happen to a QB because its hard to escape.Jared Gaither could still be signed to a friendly deal as well. I like this Brandon Brooks guy I just saw in the East-West Shrine game as another guard to develop who is LARGE and in CHARGE like Nicks. blackredfellow
I was not on the Gaither train up to this point. I have been reading up on his situation, why he was getting bounced around, etc...The guy has been a career fill-in for teams who had their franchise LT, but was injured, and always done a great job. The more I read, the more it makes sense. Even if he is a stop-gap between TRex and our next LT, he would be better than our current stop-gap Svitek.Get Gaither before we get Nicks. LT is a bigger need.
Realest
We shouldn't draft one. We've been drafting Guards. None of them have been close to as good. Spend money .
Farmer2
I'm pretty sure the Aints will slap him with the franchise tag b/4 letting him go. But if he did walk, TD better offer him the world. I don't care what he costs or what holes it creates elsewhere, especially on defense. An OG like Nicks will improve Ryan and Turner. Just do it!!! Spend the money on Gaither and go after defensive players, like Mathis or Griffin.I had the same thought just thinking out loud earlier today. Sign a true LT, move Clabo to RG, and let Baker, Svitek and Reynolds fight it out for the RT position. It saves money (one o-lineman rather than two), and we could use D-line help as well, plus we need to sign other FAs already on our team. We can also spend a 2nd rounder on an o-line pick if we wish, and where better to get a stud guard or center than in the 2nd round?
