birdman2k4
Mike Nolan is one of the best defensive minded coaches in the game. If he can't fix this defense maybe the players just aren't good? We can't blame it on coaching because Mike Nolan is a defensive guru. We've said it was coaching holding this team back. Well we got the coach. Time to see what these players can do
Peyton
It'll take Falcons fans about 5 minutes to hate Mike Nolan. That's the way the fans are. The first time a couple of players mess up, the coordinators become idiots.

Carl927
It'd be tough to blame Nolan for a scheme failure. People will still try, though.
vel
We finally have a duo of coordinators who will take the square pegs we have and cut a square hole for them to fit in.
Peyton
You'd be a fool to say Mike Nolan was an idiot.Well let's see how many fools we have on the board if our defense gives up 500 yards passing the first week.
Flying Falcon
I agree. I think the players will be at fault for this if it doesnt work out this time on defense, but ooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh let an offensive genius come and run our offense and we dont move the ball like an "explosive offense". It will be the offensive coordinator's fault all day, instead of MR.

If you bring in a guy who ran an explosive offense for one season where he had the best quarterback to ever play the game and then comes here and sucks well does our QB suck or did he benefit from having a great quarterback? The thing here is Mike Nolan is known for taking bad defenses and turning them into great defenses. In 2009 I believe he took a Broncos defense that finished 29th the year before and turned it into a legit defense. I think thats the year they got all the way to the title game and lost to Pitt? Peyton
Mike Nolan is a good hire. He was my first choice for the job. But he's not magic.People rip on the Falcons defense and BVG like he was a joke and the defense was a joke. Do you realize the Falcons defense finished better in total defense than the Dolphins did this year?Mike Nolan's gonna do a good job here, but I think there is some irrational exuberance going on. Which is cool....that's what being a fan is about I guess.
Aftermath
Fans are going to be mad every time the team is less than perfect, its the nature of the beast, its not just Atlanta fans, its all professional sports fans. I know a few Packers and Saints fans and they are steaming right now, you would think Dom Capers and Greg Williams went on a raping spree or something. There are times when fans gripe and its unwaranted, and there are times when we grip because there is a legit problem, like we saw the last two years and Saints fans have seen with Williams' D. Carl927
BVG had a decent D, but Nolan is a big step up. It's not unreasonable to expect great things from the defense. It IS unreasonable to expect immediate improvement, especially with FA's coming and going. Nolan seems to be sort of a turnover specialist. He's not starting with utter crap here, so it'll be interesting to see what he can do with a team that's already good against the rush. vel
The thing about Nolan, his defense's still are good after he leaves. The Niners, the Broncos, the Ravens, the Dolphins were turned around completely. I like that. He blazes a trail and the guys clearly buy into it. If you notice, all of those defenses are very physical too. He establishes a mentality on the defense.

Similar to Spags and the Giants D (or at least DLine).

Similar to Spags and the Giants D (or at least DLine). He is a solid hire. Much more solid that Koetter for sure. But I'm not expecting the Falcons defense to be substantially better in 2012 than in 2011.I am hoping the offense will be though. That is the unit that underperformed in the critical moments this year.
Tandy
I'm going to repeat this one more time because it's a fact that will factor in every game against a good opponent - if we don't fix both of our lines - no coaching changes will help us get to where we need to go.I like the change - but it will not help as long as we retain the same players who control the line of scrimmage on both sides.Big games are won and lost at the line of scrimmage. Peyton
I agree Tandy. An OL that can pick up a foot in a critical moment is a good start.
Karst41
The NFL is an oddity all unto its own.Would it surprise you is Koetter had success and Nolan struggles with the D?I hope they both meet with great success!

The offense as the bulk of the talent on this team.If the Falcons lose Grimes and Abraham, the Falcons defense could be downright bad in 2012, and there won't be that much that Nolan can do about it. Carl927
Koetter has the easier job, imo. He's stepping into an offense that is good, but is so conservative as to be utterly predictable. The new guy is always less predictable. At least in the short term.
