DirtyBirdDynasty
Nolans hiring would suggest the switch to a 3-4. Doing so would require a few pieces. Even if we remain a 4-3 this season I would definately expect Nolan to bring in atleast 1 big interior D linemen. The DL wasnt good enough this season. The pass rush wasnt good enough and there wasnt enough depth for the run D to last when the offense failed. We didn`t get much production in the pass game out of our interior DL which hurt our edge rushers as well. Players like Babineaux and Peters are quick undersized players who win with their quickness. The more these players stay on the field defending the run instead of rushing the passer the more they wear down. Adding a big DT would keep the undersized DTs from eating double teams and keep Spoon and Lofton clean so they can get to the ball, as well as setting up 3rd and long so Babs and Peters can rush the passer freshI think Nolan is going to look at the tape and regardless of what scheme he runs decide he needs to bring in a DT preferrably with size who can stop the run and make the other DL more effective and put the D in good situations. There are a number of potential FA D Linemen. Of the available NT/DTs I like Paul Soliai, Pat Sims and Aubrayo Franklin the most. Soliai was Nolans NT in MIA, is 28 and at 6'4 355 is a monster that eats double teams. Sims is 26 and Franklin is 31 and both are short wide run stoppers that can anchor in the run game.At 3-4 DE/4-3DT there are a couple players who I like in Calais Campbell, Mario Williams and Jason Jones. Campbell is young massive and has been crazy productive. Williams would be a DE in the 4-3 obviously but I would play him at DE in the 3-4 as well. Jason Jones could contribute as a pass rusher but is too small for 4-3 DT, could be a 3-4 DE though (hes 6-5)If I could pick 2 DL it would be Soliai and Campbell. Soliai could follow Nolan over from MIA and give us a monster in the middle to free up the LBs and other DL. Campbell gets a lot of tackles and sacks and bats down a lot of passes with his rediculous height as well. If we had them Soliai could line up at NT with Campbell and Peters at DE, Edwards could line up at LOLB with Biermann, Sidbury and Nicholas at ROLB and Weatherspoon and Lofton at the ILB positions, then we could add an edge rushing OLB in the draft
kiwifalcon
It means basically you are cleaning house with regards to the O-line I think they bring in a big NT and a DE which basically says good bye to a few of our D-line I think Abe and PJ could be goner's here I still think we need to stay with a 43 base as guys like Sid Biermann and even Abe will be asked to play OLBer I just don't no how these guys will go in coverage in fact its down right scarey. DirtyBirdDynasty
The OLBs will be asked to play downhill (if we move to a 34), basically the same thing as a 4-3 DE. Spoon and Lofton will have the coverage responsibilitiesIf we remain a 4-3 Abe is a UFA and even if we keep him we need to add a DE and probably a DT anyways Edited January 18, 2012 by DirtyBirdDynasty
madman88
Were playin a hyrbid.. we probably wnt even need the big NT... Then again we might but our base defense will be the 43 so dnt get to caught up in the 34... Its only going to compliment the base... Nolan's teams have always been predicated on big bodies on the DLine. That was a huge flaw in BVG's scheme going with midgets.

DirtyBirdDynasty
Ya like I said even if he stays with a 4-3 which I doubt as he coaches the 3-4 he's gonna take a look at the roster and take a look at the tape and decide he needs a big DT, why not bring the beast he had in MIA? ugadawg
That was a huge flaw in BVG's scheme going with midgets. I disagree with it being BVG fault. He always had monsters at UGA. I dont think he ever got his types of players at Atl.
BDillon1Falc
I don't normally make posts, I use this board for reading but i had to join to post what i saw this morning. I drive by Dekalb airport on my way into work everyday and today i looked over and say a private jet with a dolphins helmet on it. Now I cant imagine the dolphins flying Nolan into Atlanta after we take him away from them, so i wonder if it could possibly be a players jet??? what do yall think? He will be a FA. He played the same role as Ngata in the Ravens' hybrid.

DirtyBirdDynasty
He's a potential UFA. I havent looked at MIAs specific FAs but from what I can see hes the mostlikely to be resigned or tagged, hed be a great fit and is massive like Ngata but may not be available, there are a number of others who would fit, someone will be there

If they tag him again, he will be $15MM. He is already making $12M this year with the tag. That's why I don't see him being tagged again. If he is, that would suck but the Dolphins would do some dumb sh*t like that. But if not, he would most likely want to go to the scheme that made him a top NT. falconidae
I understand that playing without a massive Dtackle was Smith's idea. If Nolan brings in a huge DT, we'll know he has control of the D.
Rai
Calais Campbell would be a great acquisition. DT in 4-3, DE in 3-4. He's going to get the franchise tag at the minimum though. No way Cards let him go. I'll be shocked.
FlyHighFalcons
TL;DR OP. But I saw that he mentioned that we need big linemen for a 3-4 switch. Do you people pay attention? It's been reported and confirmed that we will run AT LEAST a 4-3 base. Could be a 4-3 base hybrid, but if that's the case you don't spend a lot of money for 3-4 guys when they will only play half the time at most. BDillon1Falc
I love that Nolan said his wheels were turning when watching film with Smitty, especially the fact that he wants to pay close attention to the secondary and said better coverages means better pass rush
