Knight of God
I have seen the 4-3 work almost as if there were a 3-4 in place. In fact our SB run in '98 included a 3-4 OLB and he was used as such.

FalconsManhood
Every head coach has their hands on whatever side of the ball they specialize in. Otherwise they would be paid less than coordinators.Smith has a specialty?

BreakTheChains
I think we should switch to a 3-4 and let Mike Nolan do his thing. We have a terrible pass rush and Abe is the only talent on the defensive line that stands out and I wouldn't be surprised if he is not back this year. That means we only have to find a way to put 3 good players out there instead of 4. It can be easier to sure up the defense. They can also be beefier rather than quick which we already have more of on the roster. The most talent on the defense is already at linebacker so that's perfect there. The talent is already heading in that direction isn't it? Just pick up a beast nose tackle in the draft or offseason? Maybe another linebacker or so later in the draft. As far as the secondary goes I don't really know what we are going to do there either way.

I'm a huge fan of Nolan and one thing he does well is revamp defenses. He makes the 4-3 look like a monster.KMABANLOL!!! What does that mean? Tootie Quivers
It's a legitimate question. Why wouldn't you switch to the 34 when Nolan has had so much success doing this way? Nolan may be as great using the 43 and it might not make a difference. I hope these questions are addressed in the conference call. Probably not knowing Ledbetter. GuerillaOntology
Was it stated that he has come here to run a 4-3? Can someone confirm that?
GuerillaOntology
"Almost every defense is multiple and a coach with the experience of Nolan should be more than able to coach a variety of ways. Bill Belichick, the dean of 3-4 defenses in the league, has essentially coached a team with a four man defensive line all season."

The Dirty Bird
I think what this really means is that we'll be using our linebackers to blitz more to create pressure. TD must be well aware that our roster is ill equipped to run a 3-4 defense (he's the one who put it together), so we can run our normal 4-3 most of the time and blitz a linebacker and have the other two drop into coverage -- basically the same as having 3 down linemen and two linebackers blitz in a 3-4 on passing downs and having two linebackers in coverage.Since we are a stout unit against the run we don't need to worry about not having the big hams up front like in a 3-4 defense. We can operate with our base 4-3. Our main problem has always been and continues to be pass rush and pass defense. Nolan should be able to conjure up more pressure with his 3-4ish blitzes and stunts to confuse the defense. I think the main point here to drive home is that he is a great defensive mind and should be able to get the most out of our defense. If he tries to switch us to a full-fledged 3-4 however I take back the nice things I just said. Historically the guy is diverse, but he's not really known to BBDB.
Clark Kent™
I think it would be a fantastic idea to have our LB's blitz more. Look at the group of guys that we have.Nicholas is the definition of an attacking LB. He has the speed to cover and rush the passerSpoon we all know is legit all around and can definitely rush the passerLofton/Peterson probably won't be that great at pass rush IMO, but who knows.Spencer Adkins could be the best pass rushing LB on our team. For those who don't remember, that was his specialty coming out of the draft. He probably would have been better suited in a 3-4.Akeem Dent I have no clue about. Didn't get to see much from him this year.

BVG called a many LB blitz that were actually delayed and/or disguised pretty well (imho), but we whiffed time and time again.
