Thelonious Mingus
He is a great 3-4 coordinator. Has he ever ran a 4-3?
raysnill1
Nolan can run 3-4, 4-3 & 5-2 but more than that, Mike Nolan gets results
SLEVEN
He has had most of his success with the 3-4 but Im hearing he has the knowledge to run both schemes. He ran a Hybrid Defense which is both 3-4 and 4-3 i believe. Edited January 18, 2012 by SPOON JONES
Joremarid
i asked the same question. what's the point?
DonDaLuvMaker
I think that Smith wants to have a hybrid defense with a 4-3 base, similar to what the Ravens had before they switched to having a 3-4 base hybrid defense. Either way it does not matter as long as it gets the job done.

vel
Seriously, instead of being negative about everything possible, how about doing a little research on what you don't like about it. Falconsfan567
I like the idea of running a hybrid 4-3 defense. I've always liked the idea of using Kroy Biermann [and now Cliff Matthews] in the same way the 3-4 teams use guys like Terrell Suggs and DeMarcus Ware. ATLBrave
****, the man has worked on offense for Christ's sake, I think he can handle running a 4-3 (of which he has experience with).

Help me research."We’ll look for a coordinator who will [aid] Coach Smith and his approach to putting that type of aggressive defense on the field.”it is still Smitty's defense. Not sure how much we can blame BVG.I love Mike Nolan, just not him running a 4-3. Shadyman
I would like to see the base in 3-4, but we are going to need a two gap NT.

Falconsfan567
LMAO Kroy nor Matthews is Terrell Suggs.I didn't say they would be Suggs. But I think Kroy could really do somethings used in that type of role.
DonDaLuvMaker
Even though the defense will have a 4-3 base, I would not be shocked if it was to eventually switch to more of a 3-4 base over the next season or two.

blizzard_falcon
Pretty sure Nolan worked on a 4-3 defense with New York, Washington and Baltimore. Edited January 18, 2012 by virginiafalcon
Psychic Gibbon
They'll run primarily out of the 4-3 this season since they have more personnel for it. They'll probably load up on DT/DEs in the draft though.
PeytonMannings Forehead
From the PFF article:The 4-3 or 3-4 tags can get a little overplayed. Almost every defense is multiple and a coach with the experience of Nolan should be more than able to coach a variety of ways. Bill Belichick, the dean of 3-4 defenses in the league, has essentially coached a team with a four man defensive line all season.
StockSpyder
Nolan is known for running his hybrid in SF, a mixup of the 4-3 and 3-4. That version did well in SF against the run and points allowed, but he had the most success in Baltimore. In the interim I think that would serve us best as we lack the personnel to make the change to a full 3-4, and without draft picks or excess trade bait, I don't see a change to 3-4 ( if there's one coming ) until at least 2013.
