g-dawg
Falcons prepared to move on without GrimesPosted Jan. 13, 2012 @ 3:06 p.m. ETBy Dan Parrhttp://www.profootballweekly.com/2012/01/13/falcons-prepared-to-move-on-without-grimesOur Falcons sources expect CB Brent Grimes, who is due to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, to be playing for a different team next season.Grimes, who underwent knee surgery in late November, missed four of the final five games of the regular season as he recovered from the procedure. He practiced on a limited basis two days prior to the Falcons' playoff loss to the Giants, though. The team was expecting him to suit up vs. the Giants, but he was added to the list of inactives the morning of the game and we hear some inside the organization were very surprised, and disappointed, that he didn't play. However, the Falcons were encouraged by the performance of CBs Dominique Franks and Chris Owens down the stretch, and the team will be looking to have the cap flexibility to re-sign some of its other core players. We hear that Grimes, the team's top corner, is likely to price himself out of the team's range.
stldirtybird
I had a feeling it would be like this....can we franchise and trade him?

Francis York Morgan
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOI would want us to franchise and trade him if need be though yeah...God, this one hurts if true, we have to sign someone like Finnegan in FA if this happens.Actually...that's a good point KoG, and if we do get Finnegan we'd have two good man CBs. Still sucks but when you think about it that way... Edited January 13, 2012 by Falcan Moore
Grrrillapmpn Inc.®
Secondary is an obvious need, so we jettison our best corner?
Minus Whale
Are they suggesting that he didn't play because he was afraid of getting hurt/losing money?
g-dawg
I had a feeling it would be like this....can we franchise and trade him?we could but if you franchise him, then you are not going to get much in a trade - and you might get stuck with him at a sky-high price which crushes your cap.I don't like letting him go for nothing though. I think Falcons need to keep him - unless we can use his money for D-Linemen.

Aftermath
I love the dude, but I think he is a tad overrated and will be too expensive for us.
g-dawg
I thought Dominque Franks looked good down the stretch and I bet Mike Smith and Dimitroff are jacked about what they have seen in Darrin Walls.Probably want to take that money that Grimes would cost and put it into the Offensive and Defensive lines. paulitik
I'll be certianly glad to have his wife's mouth out of Atlanta. That said, I'd like to keep him, or at least get something for him.
IceFalcon
You never know what is going to happen..This is why we get Spags, restructure Dunta's contract (Shouldn't be too hard.. he has VASTLY underperformed), and sign Grimes at 5-6 mil a year. A Pimp Named Slickback™
If Grimes wants to get his money, then by all means he should do so. It just won't be in the ATL
g-dawg
This year's "Dahl Mistake."I still don't think Dahl was a mistake. With Dahl we might have gotten those short yardage runs but Michael Turner's rushing yards would have been the same.Harvey Dahl was a poor pass blocker so that part of Dahl's game would not have helped. vel
Man...That would be the worst. But the same was said about Blalock "pricing himself out of our range" last year.

Slick Skillet
I agree 100% with this move. If we are going to more man coverage this makes sense. Grimes is an off-man zone corner similar to Asante Samuel. Robinson, Franks, Owens, and Walls are more man cover corners. I said this a while back and it appears that the coaching staff sees the same thing. Our DTs and scheme are what ails this defense.

Farmer2
I love Grimes, but this is probably a smart business/football decision. Grimes' strength is his freakish athletic ability. That will start to decline, and possibly sooner than later coming off knee surgery. When that happens, you're stuck w/ a high priced 5'7" CB.
