Hba Mock Draft 2012 V.2

Positions of need

DC-This will be by far the biggest acquisition this offseason, because our defense was not awful it has never been great! Our number one target Steve Spagnuolo who probably will be the most in demand DC on the market and rightfully so, Spagnuolo has successfully turned the G-Men into one of the most dominate units the past five years. On paper we have the piece to be just as dominate as the Giants yet I don’t think we have never had the right person to lead us in the right direction. Outside of the Eagles I can’t see a more logical place for him to land. We already run the same 4-3, we have an opening and we have a top 5 offense.

OC-This is probable A2 to the DC acquisition only because at times our offense has been dominated we just seem to have lapse in judgment in big games. Our number one target, Tom Clements QB coach for the Green Bay, who tutelage has seen Aaron Rodgers rise to be mention with one of the best QB in the league. Not to mention the work he has done to make Matt Flynn a hot commodity. Clements has had a history with drastically improving the QB in each of the stop he has been in. Ryan Matt should be offering to pay for a portion of his salary with all the money he will be making him.

LT-Sam Baker point blank just has not been the answer at the LT spot, he has already lost is his spot to Will Svitek. Will Svitek has done a better than average job while protecting Ryan’s blindside but does not project to be a long term answer, he’s more of a stop gap and backup tackle at this point in his career. I truly expect the Falcons to find an option for either depth in early rounds and look to draft a stud in the first round of 2013 draft (Ricky Wagner, Jake Matthews & Riley Reiff). Another option is to sign a LT in FA.

RG-This position has been more of a trial by fire since Dahl bolted for greener pastures to St. Louis. Reynolds has already been arrested for conspiring to put a hit out on Matt Ice with his level of play this year. Although Hawley has stabilized the position, he too figures to be more of a short term answer to a long term problem. I fully expect the Falcons to address the RG in the draft oppose to FA if not why let Dahl go the year before.

FS-This is a puzzling question for me. Even thou I am not really the biggest supporter of DeCoud, I am also not his biggest critic. Which is much like his play on the field; there are moments where you have to question if DeCoud has money on the game (for the other team). And then you have to look at his stat and say to yourself “okay not bad”. I personally would sign DeCoud to a one year extension unless someone surprisingly hit the FA market. I can’t really see any at the bottom of the second round in the draft being an improvement over DeCoud. I know a lot of you have your “guy” who runs a 4.1 and can leap 12 ft but let’s truly ask ourselves, if they were all that and a bag of chips would they be available in the bottom of the second round. Probably not! This too could possibly be a position we address early in 2013 draft (Bacarri Rambo, T.J. McDonald & John Boyett)

TE-Although Tony G resign for another year we have to find a replacement at some point in time. With several great prospects coming out this year, I truly hope that we find his replacement to have a year with him. What better coaching can a young gifted TE can get by having arguable the best TE ever to play to teach you secrets of how he has gain his success. That would be the best investment to payoff for years to come. It would almost be like having two number first round draft picks for the opening of 2013 season.

Depth in on defense needs to be a solved in this offseason (LB & DT).

why would we waste money on one of the worst tacklers in the league in Reggie Nelson?

why the hate on Redman?

Demps is picking track over football.

what's the point of picking another OG in the midrounds when we still have Mike Johnson?

The rest of the picks aren't bad. I like Fleener obviously.

We need a much better backup QB than JPW.

Thanks for the heads up on Demps, I will make modification to the mock. Also Nelson has played much better than some may think of recent. According Profootball Focus Nelson was a top 20 tackler at the FS spot alot of his reputation as a bad tackler came when Del Rio attempted to put him in as a SS.

As far a Redman there is no hate towards him, but I'm thinking about the return on investment and the fact that we really brought JPW off of the practice squad so other teams will not steal him tells me that they are really considering him here beyond this past year. He has already used up his pratice squad elligible which means we either have to sign him or cut him which we can't do both he and Redman.

Picking another OG bring about two things quality depth and competition.

JPW still has PS eligibility for the same reason he was on it this year, he was inactive while on the team.

star-divide.v5e9d7f1.jpg

In order to be eligible for the practice squad, players must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Have no prior Accrued Seasons in the NFL (An accrued season is six or more games on the active roster);
  • Have one prior Accrued Season in which the player was on the 45-man active roster for no more than 8 games;
  • If served two seasons on a practice squad, are eligible for a third season only if the team has at least 53 players on its active/inactive list for the duration of that player's employment.

It's worth noting that a player will be considered to have served on a practice squad in a season if he were a member of a practice squad for three regular or postseason games during his first two practice squad seasons, or for one regular season or postseason game during a third practice squad season.

Players on the practice squad can earn a minimum of $5,700 per week in 2011. It is worth noting teams can pay a member of the practice squad anything above that amount but it appears as though it impacts the salary cap. For the 49ers that isn't really an issue whatever the rule is since they're so far under the cap at this point. Maybe that's why the 49ers have so much room. Ballin practice squad players!

It is also important to note that once a player signs with a practice squad, with one exception he can sign with another team's 53-man roster at any point during the season. The one exception is that practice squad players may not sign a contract with his team's next opponent after 4pm ET six days preceding the game (10 days preceding in bye weeks). A player cannot sign a practice squad contract with one team and then leave to sign a practice squad contract with another team, unless the first team has released said player.

Finally, if a player is promoted from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, that player must remain there for three weeks and get paid the minimum salary for their status. If they are let go before the three weeks, they still receive the three weeks pay.

There is one exception to this called the Contagious Disease Addendum, which was first added in June 2010 in a side letter agreement to the last CBA. This states that if a player is promoted from the practice squad for a game because a club was given a roster exemption due to confirmed or suspected cases of contagious disease among its players, the player remains on his practice squad contract, but will be paid 1/17 of the league minimum salary. After the game he will be returned to the practice squad without having to clear waivers.

He has been on the practice squad for three years.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but from what I am reading:

He was undrafted after 2009 draft.

Then was the third QB on our roster for the 2009 and 2010 season.

This season he was on the PS for most of the season until he was escalated and kept inactive for the rest of the season.

The first two seasons don't count toward his eligibility b/c he was inactive, so this was his first season on the PS and can still be there two more years.

I'm not sure if that is possible but I can't recall any fourth year player in the league being on a PS roster, just seems a bit excessive.

I really like most of it - very similar to my own mock. If Gaither will sign for that price, I would go for it despite his inconsistent effort / play over the last year.

But I really don't feel Reggie Nelson is an upgrade.

Also, you haven't listed Grimes as re-signed, even though he is on the depth chart. If he is re-signed, I'm not sure we have enough cap space to bring them all back as well as Nelson and Gaither. Who do you feel will take a hometown discount?

After seeing Nelson in the couple of games this year, I wanted to dig a little deeper in the number. In the two years he was with Cincinnati and playering few games (snaps) he bolster better stats in every catergory than DeCoud. So one question his tackling, in 2010 he totaled zero broken tackles in the 37 solo tackles he posted.

Waiting on the offical count for 2011....

Tied for first on team in passes defensed (twelve), with two sacks and two forced fumble. Has supported effort for Bengals defense to rank sixth in NFL in fewest yards allowed per game (314.1), fourth in fewest yards allowed per offensive play (4.9), and 11th in fewest passing yards per game (214.4).

All while being the best safety on the team.

I like the Jared Gaither signing. I think he would be a valuable pickup. I don't particularly like the Nelson signing though. I really don't think we improve very much by adding him. I think DeCoud is resigned for a reasonable 2-3 year deal until we can find a true upgrade.

I like Coby Fleener, but I just do not think that we are going to draft a TE with our first pick after resigning TG. I think the best plan is to wait until next year when we can use our first or 2nd round pick on a TE to come in an immediately replace Gonzalez. I just don't feel like we have the luxury to sit a guy for a year when we could potentially get a quality player at another position.

Silatolu would be a solid pick in the 3rd and is a guy who has a very high ceiling.

Mike Martin is also a solid pick in the 5th who could be solid in the rotation.

Overall, it is a pretty good offseason, but I disagree on where we should go with our first pick.

I'm not sure what position "of need" that we can upgrade in the bottom of the second round that would not sit for a year. I can't see a CB, S, DE or etc that would be available could come it and start over anything we currently have on the roster. The only other option was OG and I think I was able to fill that position with a very capable prospect in the 3rd.

As far a Nelson I think a lot of people have a bad taste in their mouth for him from his days in J'Ville, well part of that had to do with Del Rio. If you remember what he was able to do in college and his rookie then (was inthe running for DROY), then look at what he was able to do in Cinny. Trust me you can count on one hand the number of players that was able to thrive under Del Rio, yet it will take all day the number of players career he has ruin. Ask any Bengals fan what they think of Nelson and I a sure you they would have fond things to say. He is probably going to be the best prospect available this year pros or college.

I'm not sure that's really a compliment. That just means he's middle of the pack right? What was Decoud's ranking?

? Middle of the pack???? Simple math 32 teams 2 starting safeties on each team. He was 16/64 of just starting safeties in the league. DeCoud wasn't on the list! That's not a compliment!

Oh sorry, I was only thinking of FSs. Didn't think to include SSs on the list.
