Schottenheimer Linked To Falcons

Recommended Posts

Might be just a rumor but I'm curious as to what people think. I haven't really given him much thought.

Theismann links Schottenheimer to Falcons on 680TheFan

9:47 am January 12, 2012, by D. Orlando Ledbetter

Could Brian Schottenheimer, formerly of the New York Jets, be the Falcons new offensive coordinator?

NFL Network’s Joe Theismann, who knows Schottenheimer from his days coaching with the Washington Redskins, linked him to the Falcons in a radio interview this morning on 680TheFan’s morning show, the Rude Awakening with Chris Rude, Sandra Golden and Perry Laurentino.

Here’s part of the interview:

“[brian] felt like he was saddled and limited by what Mark Sanchez can do in New York,” Theisman said. “Mark is really not that good. He’s a hard-working kid. He wants to be good. But he doesn’t understand the game of football the way Matt does.

“You have to play the position with the knowledge of where you are on the field, what the score is in the game. What [you] can do. What [you] can’t do. What are the things that are required of me. Really, the only route that Mark throws effectively is the quick post. He’s going to have a whole lot more to work with, with Matt Ryan.”

They asked him to clarify his comments.

“I’ve [unaudible] Brian was going to be the offensive coordinator.”

The Falcons have stated that they would do their search privately, but we have a call into them to see if they’ll comment on Schottenheimer. (Expecting a no comment).

We have calls into the Theismann to see if he will expound on his knowledge of the Atlanta search.

Either way, I’m going to revise my working list of candidates to replace Mike Mularkey. Smith said he wants a balanced attack and doesn’t believe you can be one-dimensional.

1. Dirk Koetter

2. Brian Schottenheimer

3. Terry Robiskie

4. Hue Jackson

5. Brian Billick

*Removed: Mike Martz, the architect of the “World’s Greatest Show of Turf.” He’s chillaxing at his home in San Diego. If his phone rings, he’d answer it. Word is that he’d be interested in talking about the post.

I have agreed for a long time that his hands were tied with Sanchez. This is what some posters are trying to say about MM with Ryan. That is obviously not true. MM was just inept. Sanchez just sucked. MM's offense in JAX will not look like anything because Gabbert sucks worse than Sanchez. I wouldn't mind Schottenheimer. He is balanced but also attacks and is a young guy trying to establish himself. Plus, he was a QB coach and could help develop Ryan.

Marty Mornhinweg sucked at Detroit terribly but turned Vick into a real QB.

How do you know he is it worse than MM, Mark Sanchez sucks, Jets had a good running attack in the past. Jets could run the HB screen. Something we haven't been able to do here. I wouldn't be upset if we picked him. Tho I would like to see Hue Jackson back here, but don't really know who is the best option.

LOL at Ledbetter still having Koetter at the top of his list.

No matter how great the guy is in an interview, Arthur Blank is too savvy to hire a guy who just oversaw the worst offense in the league.

Getting rid of a coordinator who scored 43 offensive TDs for one that scored 21?

Just not gonna happen.

Koetter has a great offensive mind. It's hard to work with J-ville UFL WR core and a rookie QB with no pocket awareness.

Guest King Shot

The best thing about this article is that when listing the hosts of the morning show, they left out Leo Mazzone. God I hate that guy.

I heard the interview this morning. Brian's offense consisted of mainly dink and dunk passes with a strong running game so maybe that's what the FO thinks fits Ryan best. It would be a disappointing hire in my eyes but if you're talking about maximizing Ryan's skill set maybe he can do that.
