Aggressive Off-Season

Recommended Posts

Be warned, everyone will hate at least one thing in here.

I want us to move towards a more spread out offence using a base formation with 3WR-1TE-1RB and a heavier set of 2WR-2TE-1RB. The full back will only be used in short yardage and goal line situations. The defence will use Nicholas as a rusher far more in 4-3 under looks, and will have resources dedicated to the front 4. The coaches I want would implement these schemes.

New Staff

OC: Todd Haley (former OC Arizona Cardinals 2008 with Fitz/Boldin/Breaston that went to the SB)

DC: Steve Spagnuolo (former DC Giants 2007 with the pass rush that beat Brady)

Cuts (total cap saving: $8m)

Michael Turner (5m cap saving if cut after June 1)

Ovie Mughelli (2.1m)

Garrett Reynolds (400k)

Sam Baker (500k)

Turner and Mughelli are not required in this more spread out offence that de-emphasises the full back. Neither are young or cheap so they will not be worth anything in a trade. Baker and Reynolds are not of an adequate standard.

Not Re-Signed

John Abraham,

Kroy Biermann

James Sanders

Jason Snelling

Kelvin Hayden, Eric Weems, Reggie Kelly, Mike Cox, Carlton Powell

John Abraham is just too old. Biermann is never going to be an every down end. Sanders will be let go with a heavy heart after using him to reduce DeCoud’s bargaining power. Snelling can be a power back elsewhere unless he is willing to sign for the minimum again.

Re-Signings (expenditure vs. 2012 cap - $23.4m)

Brent Grimes (Deal equivalent to Jonathan Joseph; 5 yrs/48m)

Curtis Lofton (Paul Pozluszny; 6 yrs/42m)

Harry Douglas (James Jones; 3years/9m)

Thomas DeCoud (Melvin Bullitt; 3yrs/7m)

Chris Redman (Seneca Wallace; 2 yr/3m)

Todd McClure (last yr’s money; 1 yr/1.5m)

Vance Walker, Michael Palmer, Antone Smith, Joe Zelenka – Min Contracts

Grimes and Lofton are essential in my book. Douglas will be promised an increased role and punt return duties. DeCoud and Redman come relatively cheap. McClure does one more year, but can retire in camp if he is not a starter.

Free Agent Signings (cap hit: $11.5m)

Cliff Avril, RDE, Detroit Lions (4yrs / 33m)

Corey Graham, DB, Chicago Bears (2yrs/2.5m)

Avril is 25 and is getting better – only 3 fewer sacks than Abe over the last three years with 3 MORE FF. Graham is one of the best special teams players in the league.

Cap Situation:

We would be at $124m, which is forecast to be almost exactly at the cap.

Draft

2nd: David Wilson, RB, Virginia Tech

Our new running game. Able to make plays out of both single back and I-form sets. Threat in the screen and passing game. Durable. Would also like Lamar Miller if he fell. 10 years younger than Turner.

3rd: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

Solid blocker with a wide catch radius. Would make a good complement to Gonzalez year 1 and then with Palmer.

Trade: 2013 3rd Round for a 2012 4th Round

4th: Amini Silatolu, OG, Mid-Western State

Aggressive run blocker with the anchor to hold up well in pass protection. Potential starter at guard.

5th: Markus Zusevics, OT, Iowa

Blue-collar talent from an O-Line factory. Could be a valuable swing tackle and compete for a job year 2.

6th: Mike Martin, DT, Michigan

Penetrating DT who can offer additional pass rush to our depth on the DL.

6th comp: Terrance Greenaway, RB, Baylor

Bulldozer for short yardage plays – Snelling replacement.

7th: Adrian Hamilton, DE, Prairie View

Only other NCAA players with 20+ sacks in a season - Robert Mathis and Chris Gocong. Give him a go at least.

UDFA: Joe Halahuni, FB, Oregon State

The new full back. Looks like a big dude.

UDFA: TJ Graham, WR/KR, North Carolina State

Track star speed out wide who would be compete with Franks to be KR

UDFA: Asa Jackson, CB, Cal-Poly

Nice depth pickup shamelessly stolen from A-Town’s mock

Depth Chart

QB: Ryan, Redman

RB/FB: Wilson, Ganaway, Rodgers, Smith, Halahuni

WR: White, Jones, Douglas, Meier, Graham

TE: Gonzalez, Fleener, Palmer

OT: Svitek, Clabo, Valdez, Zusevics

OG/C: Blalock, McClure, Silatolu, Johnson, Hawley, Jackson

DE: Avril, Edwards, Sidbury, Matthews, Hamilton

DT: Babineaux, Peters, Jerry, Walker, Martin

LB: Lofton, Weatherspoon, Nicholas, Adkins, Dent, James

CB: Grimes, Robinson, Franks, Owens, Walls, Jackson

S: DeCoud, Moore, Graham, Schillinger

ST: Zelenka, Bosher, Bryant

2013 Draft Outlook

DE (as Spags needs multiple rushers) and LT will be the main two areas we will need to address.

Cornerback, safety depth and a backup QB will be mid-round needs.

I think you included the entire projected annual salaries of the players instead of just guaranteed money, which is what actually impacts the salary cap. If you do it that way then you have plenty of room to work with.

By the way, my favorite move is easily trading into the 4th round to get Silatolu. I think I might steal that move for my own mock.

That's the only move I hate. You can't keep trading from the next year to fill this year. Then in 2013, do we trade a 2014 2nd to get a 2013 3rd back? No. Trust your drafting. Mike Johnson was drafted to play. The only reason Reynolds beat him out is because Johnson broke his foot (Lisfranc I think). I think we go Johnson or FA for a RG.

That and Svitec has taken the starting job at LT. We can certainly find a backup in FA for cheap if we don't retain Baker. Give this line a whole offseason to work on pass protection and they can improve to even better than they were in the second half of the season (the giant's game was a fluke).

I prefer the strategy of getting the player you want and need now instead of waiting until next season.

Instead of using Stephen Nicholas as a rush linebacker why not draft a guy like Bruce Irvin in the second round, you all ready have a guy similar to David Wilson on the roster

Bruce Irvin is very one dimensional. You're getting just a pass rushing specialist on 3rd and long when you draft him, imo. Maybe he'll develop into a complete player but that might be a couple seasons away. It's a bit like our guy, Lawrence Sidbury, who fell to our 4th because he was one dimensional.

I don't think we can spend our first pick on someone that will hardly see the field.
