One Down, One To Go

I think he took a lot of flak for never being able to compensate for lack of a pass rush, he would have looked better if he had more help from the defensive line but no one dominates every game of the season with their front four and we need a real NFL DC to add some creativity.

Im hoping they dig deep for a up and coming defensive guy with some original ideas, and not some washed up coach trying to stay employed

Lots of people are blaming the wrong person. Does anyone believe that was a 100% Brian Van Gorder defense?

When Van Gorder took the job with the Falcons, he was known as a guy that liked to blitz and blitz alot.

What was Smith known for? Cover 2 which relies on a four man pressure.

What have the Falcons defense done since Smith got there?

All I can say is, put two and two together.

Smith needs to be held accountable. If it were the sycola falcons, theyd all be kicking rocks

Im loving that he went to Auburn, now UGA wont have to worry about them again this year...

Sorry to break it to you but bvg's defense is going to break every defense record on the books. Continuing the georgia sports curse with another slap in the face

For those parts of the D that I had problems with I blame Smith just as much as BVG. I was him well and hope we get a better replacement.

While we're discussing coaching changes, can someone - anyone - please explain to me this sequence of plays at the end of the first half:

  • after a Giants punt, Atlanta gets the ball back at their 20 with 1:08 left and at least 2 timeouts left - actually I think it was 3.
  • the next 5 plays are at the bottom of this link:

http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/playbyplay?gameId=320108019&period=2

  • so that means that they called 5 pass plays: the first was incomplete; the next two gained 13 yards; Ryan scrambled for 3 on the next play; then the fifth was a 9 yard gain. To summarize they gained 25 yards on 5 plays and two first downs. On two of the plays the clock stopped (incomplete pass and 3-yard catch by Roddy who went OB), while two of the completions were to Gonzo over the middle and then there was the scramble by Ryan. It is these 3 plays that they could have used a TO.
  • but they didn't use any TOs until the last catch by Gonzo - at the Atl 45 - with 4 seconds left. Then they use the TO so they can throw a Hail Mary.

No one has asked about that sequence because the game got out of hand once it was 24-2, but this is an example of chickenshyt coaching at its worst. Why didn't you use all of your TOs to try to get into FG range? Instead they ran four plays while chewing up a full minute before calling a TO to throw a desparation bomb. Using at least two TOs would've saved at least 30 seconds.

There is no way a team, ot its coaching staff, that has aspirations of being explosive - or he77 just winning the game - would try to not gain 50 yards (to try to get within FG range) with 1:08 left and at least 2 TOs left.

I think what happened was after the first pass went incomplete, Smith didn't want to leave any time on the clock for the NYG, so he didn't call timeout on the next few short but completed in-bounds passes. Then once Atl got close to mid-field Smith figured 'what the heck, let's throw one up.'

If I'm right about that, then that is chickenshyt coaching!!!

THAT completely baffled me to watch that clock run down. I thought thet were out of TOs and was wondering " why don't they look like they have any sense of urgency?" Then I learned they had two TOs and I was like..wtf?

I don't get it either bart.. Smith has completely folded.

Its kind of like when texas hold em got popular.. I started playing and won all the time.. But the more I played the more I would over think things and try all these strategies.. And then I couldn't win to save my life. I think smith is out smarting himself.. But he probably isn't half as smart as he think he is.

I bet you if you gave Smith truth serum, he'd admit to not wanting the Giants to have another possession with about 50 seconds left after a Falcons punt. They only had one good drive all half, so what are the odds they'll have one now?

But that is the difference in playing not to lose instead of playing to win. You have at least two TOs and just over a minute - you can't run out the clock in that situation.

Worry wort coaching move - with 2 or 3 TOs they could've used the entire playbook (which isn't very thick to begin with).

I think its effing hilarious how BVG saw the writing on the wall and all of the sudden all of RC thinks its a bad move? We just gave up 24 (27 if it weren't for a missed FG) to the Giants in the playoffs and gave up 48 in the playoffs last year. If not BVG, then WHO?

again....depends on how much say BVG had in personnel decisions. Was Edwards his choice? If not, then it isn't like they gave BVG any damned help at all this past offseason. Even with Edwards that isn't much. Was drafting Jerry his idea?

And yes....you are going to give up 24 points to a playoff team when your offense isn't doing crap. Your defense did a great job keeping it close until the two minute mark in the third quarter. Think that maybe at that point they were getting tired having been on the field for most of the game?

We have plenty of talent on defense. That is all.

really?

I agree that your LB corps are really good but Babs is the only DLineman who did well. Despite him taking up double teams, the other DLinemen couldn't do much.

Grimes is a great CB, but I think most will agree that DRob isn't even close to earning his contract. Also, there has been a lot of concern about Decoud
