On The Bright Side: Falcons Owner/gm/head Coach Can No Longer Be In Denial

On the bright side, I think the 24-2 humiliating loss and the total "egg laying" that is the Falcons offense is good.

Had the Falcons "won ugly" or barely lost on the road against the NY Giants, then I think you would have seen a "status quo" offseason with same coaches, etc. going into 2012. Now, I believe the public pressure is much greater that something must be done.

The Falcons are a flawed team - none of us like to admit it but all of us know its true. While there are obvious weaknesses in personnel: Offensive Line, occasional poor QB play by Matty Ice, lack of pass rush and poor play in secondary by Thomas DeCoud and sometimes by Dunta - the bottom-line is this: our offensive and defensive schemes are not up to snuff. Falcons play "not to lose" and Falcons don't play to win. There is nothing aggressive in Falcons schemes and the mentality is very "buttoned down".

Regardless of the outcome yesterday - serious changes need to be made. Now is a critical point in franchise - to stay "status quo" is simply unacceptable.

Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith need to get in a room and look at everything objectively. Dimitroff needs to let Smith know where he sees his weaknesses and coaching staff's weaknesses and Smith needs to share with Dimitroff what is needed from personnel standpoint to get to upper echelon. Of course this is probably done every off-season but now the bloom is off the rose - SOMETHING MUST BE DONE....

While it pains me what happened yesterday - I think the end result could be productive if coordinator changes, scheme changes and more offensive line help is brought in.

Yesterday's blowout - if it affects necessary changes - could be a blessing in disguise.

I don't know that they were ever in denial. It's easy to say fire _______, cut _______ , but who do you replace them with? There's a finite amount of individuals on this planet that can coach or play on the NFL level, let alone do it on a EXTREMELY high level. I say extremely high level because a majority of NFL teams would love to have 4 winning seasons in a row and 3 playoff appearances in that time. The Falcons are a GOOD team from top to bottom it's going to take some work to find individuals to take the team to the next level. Everyone at Flowery Branch knows that and has known that.

Some positives for 2012-13... the AFC West and NFC East are on the slate.

ok......well Falcons were the same team before Giants loss as they are now. Its easy for teams/organizations to get trapped into the "hey we have winning seasons" thing so we are good.

Sometimes an organization needs a slap in the face - Falcons have gotten slapped two years in a row. If that does not affect change, then nothing will and it will say Falcons happy being 12th best team in NFL.

I think its funny how everyone on this board blames TD28 for so many problems in the safety position, but BleacherReport says Willy Mo is our problem at the safety position!!!! I personally like them both, I do feel TD28 is out of position on a lot of plays and he's better suited as a backup. I just think putting all the blame on safeties is just fans/reporters looking to blame someone....

R U Serious?

Finite amount of coaches? Yeah, I guess we should just sign Mularkey to another 6yr contract because we cannot find anybody better.......wow, that attitude is a losers attitude to me.

OK, my eyes and most everyone else that watch Falcons on this board - tells them that Thomas DeCoud is problem but because one guy that writes an article in his basement and posts that William Moore is the problem - therefore that guy is right........huh....

QFT....I'm not riding with that either.

If the Falcons stick with Mularkey/Van Gorder because there are only a "finite amount of individuals on this planet that can coach or play on the NFL level" (utter bull hockey!) then they should just bulldoze Flowery Branch and turn it into a strip mall.

Its not a positive but its the only good thing for our team to come out of this.... Lets say we would have some how beat the Giants even with our Offense being inconsistent... Its no way in the world TD or Coach Smith would have let Mularkey or BVG go.. They would have said we got a step closer... To me thats fool's gold.. We have gone as far as we can with those 2.

So its not a positive but i do think it force some kind of change

Actualoly, there ARE a finite amount of people capable of coaching at an extermely high level in the NFL. That does not for one moment excuse not hiring a collection of them.

exactly atljbo.....while a playoff win would have been awesome - and then shellacking the next week in GB - you are right - there would be no pressure brought to bare in Flowery Branch to make the changes that are needed.

Maybe now there will be.......the sooner the better.

Thats not what I was saying at all. All I said was I find it funny. And a fans point of view when it comes to grading professionals means as much as that Bleacherreport guys point of view. But a bunch of people that write post from their basement on this board is right?!?!

the point is simply that my viewpoint that Thomas DeCoud is the weak link is a widely held point of view on this website - by other guys just like me.

I've heard nary a peep on William Moore other than your mention. WillyMo's biggest problem is he cannot stay healthy.

So I'm guessing you didn't actually read my original post when I said "I like them BOTH".

In answer to the Heading of your thread :

You wanna bet ????

LMAO......yeah Bring It - well I do reserve the right to be stunned that the Falcons could stay status quo.

I think if Falcons choose to stay status quo, they will definitely lose a large share of season ticket holders - fans in ATL don't support teams that don't try to win at highest levels..

Yes, there are a finite amount of coaches, did I say keep MM? Nope. Did I say he couldn't be replaced? Nope. Merely that there are very few coaches that are extremely talented. As a Falcons fan I think we deserve better coaching and a better product, however it's not easy to find top notch talent.

Just ask Nick Saban how hard it is to coach on the NFL level.
